Curatorial Assistant
The Academy of the Arts of the World is a non-profit cultural institution founded in 2012 by the City of Cologne. It considers itself an association of artists, cultural workers and researchers, and less an educational institution in the conventional sense. The Academy’s members form a network of cultural workers spread across the entire globe. The members come from diverse disciplines, interact virtually and gather together once a year. They strive to give a specific and critical meaning to the concept of ‘arts of the world’. The Academy produces and organizes events across various forms of art: exhibitions, lectures, discussions, concerts, performances, films and installations.
The Academy of the Arts of the World seeks a committed curatorial assistant (m/f/x) for a part-time (20 hours/week) position from 1 December 2019 (or later) to 28 February 2021.
Your responsibilities include
Assisting the Artistic Director with content-related research and the planning of the artistic programme, including research on artistic positions and institutions in the cultural scene
Functioning as editor of the texts produced by the Artistic Director and, as necessary, coordinating translations and proofreading
Independently composing texts, such as curatorial texts and concepts, artist biographies, texts for external funding applications, texts for press and public relations
Coordinating and attending meetings and appointments, especially those of the Artistic Director
Correspondence and translation duties for the Artistic Director in German and English
Booking travel and hotels for the Artistic Director as well as members of the Academy
Organizing of the annual members’ meeting
Providing guidance and support to artists in Cologne
Independent content-related planning and supervision of events as part of the annual artistic programming in consultation with the Artistic Director and the Head of Production
Finding event locations and exhibition spaces in consultation with the production team
General administrative duties
Your profile
Completed studies in humanities, social sciences, communications or cultural management (B.A. or M.A.); or equivalent professional qualifications
High degree of familiarity with contemporary art scenes (internships, work experience)
Extensive experience in producing texts
Strong proficiency with MS Office
Excellent social and intercultural skills
Very good German and English skills, knowledge of additional languages is desirable
Familiarity with current political and cultural debates
Interest in contemporary aesthetic and theoretical discourses
