Part of the Photography team and reporting into the First Photographic assistant the main purpose of the role is to assist the First and Second Photographic Assistants in facilitating the best possible shoot environment so the photographer can concentrate on the task at hand. The aim is clear - ensure a successful and smooth-running shoot achieved through attention to detail, hard work, communication and problem solving together with the First Photographic Assistant.

While the First Photographic Assistant will be monitoring the whole operation from technical aspects of the shoot to the performance of the photographic team, the Junior Photographic Assistant must be able to foresee any other potential issues that may arise from shoot to shoot. In this role you will build strong working relations across the business whilst learning and building upon your own technical photographic knowledge.

Your day to day at RANKIN

  • Consistent upkeep of the photographic equipment and studio space. 
  • Taking the initiative in keeping the photographic space clean and tidy and reporting to the studio manager in this instance. 
  • Pre-empt the photographer’s needs and anticipate any likely issues ahead of the shoot. 
  • Maintain constant communication and co-ordination with the First and Second Photographic Assistants. 
  • Shooting tests and castings.
  • Location recces. 
  • Ensure that the needs of the client and the talent are met throughout a shoot by communicating any issues to the production team. 
  • Maintain a safe working environment for all those on set both in studio and on location. 
  • Show strong and consistent initiative both on and off set to the needs of the Photographer and the general Studio needs. 
  • Show the ability to learn and build upon knowledge independently. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

Essential skills, experience and personal attributes

  • Set and assisting experience in a photographic studio for at least 1 year (freelance or full time).
  • Solid knowledge of all photographic equipment and lighting including Profoto and Elinchrom.
  • Working knowledge of various camera systems including Hasselblad, PhaseOne, Canon, Mamiya,Pentax and Sony. 
  • Working knowledge of CaptureOne and Adobe Photoshop. 
  • UK driving license required – experience driving large vehicles including Transit and Luton is essential. Experience driving in London is also required.
  • In addition to freelance experience, a successful candidate may have had experience as an assistant previously with notable photographers. 
  • Ability to manage time and consistency on set in fast-paced environments. 
  • Attention to detail specifically to the needs of the photographer, clients and other stakeholders.   
  • Ability to show initiative and competence and a positive 'can do' attitude to all aspects of the job.
  • Maintaining an excellent rapport with the Photographer and the First and Second Photographic Assistants.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all members of the photographic team, a good team player. 
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and keep a constant tone of communication. 
  • Ability to problem solving on set. 
  • Understanding that the role requires long working hours and working weekends when needed. 
  • Experience of working in studio spaces and on location would be ideal.
  • Accustomed to working in a mixed stills and film environment, co-ordinating between both teams. 
  • Proficiency in studio power supplies and outages is a plus. 
  • Basic knowledge of all Grip equipment. 
  • Basic knowledge of building equipment lists and identifying lighting set ups.
  • Awareness of digital techniques such as long exposures, freeze flashing and bracketing as well as plating and post-shoot.
  • Solid knowledge on how cameras work notably exposure increments. Shutter speeds, ISO and aperture in any environment.
  • Ability to travel internationally (relevant documentation to be in order).
  • Photographic or related degree. 
  • Experience in Retouching, Digital Technician and/or Production would be a plus.
