Massachusetts College of Art and Design is seeking candidates for full-time, tenure-track and/or permanent part-time faculty positions at the level of Assistant or Associate Professor, in the Photography Department beginning fall of 2020.

MassArt is the oldest, and one of two public, state supported, independent colleges of art and design in the country. We are humbled by the responsibility of serving the public, and the broad demographic of students from across the Commonwealth, the region, the nation, and beyond. MassArt seeks to be a leader in increasing diversity within its curriculum and support programs, as well as in its faculty, staff, and student populations. As we aim to promote an inclusive environment, we seek candidates who can actively participate in our shared goals and encourage applicants to apply and to identify their strengths in this area. In this urgent time, MassArt prioritizes the teaching of sustainability in art and design and defines it as addressing and solving the problems at the intersection of social justice, health, and the environment.

The MassArt Photography Department focuses on the medium as a means of artistic expression in teaching undergraduate, graduate, and post-baccalaureate students. Our emphasis is on personal vision, experimentation, and an understanding of the history of photography and the body of criticism that surrounds it. Students are introduced to a wide variety of necessary tools and become well-versed in the medium's technical and aesthetic traditions, as well as in the contemporary directions of photography. Our curriculum covers analog and digital production, providing a strong foundation for a career in photographic arts. We are seeking new faculty who will add to the range of our curriculum and who are committed to teaching diverse concepts and techniques as well as to the development of their own artistic work.

The ideal candidate will encourage innovative pedagogical approaches for engaging a diverse body of students while teaching them to think across multiple approaches to photography. We are searching for a colleague with demonstrated teaching/mentoring abilities who will help our students engage with critical discourse, cultural history, and/or creative and social issues. The successful applicant will also demonstrate commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as a history of working with broadly diverse communities.

Summary of Duties:

-Teaching and advising undergraduate students in all levels of photography.

- Participation in college-wide, department, and professional activities including, but not limited to, review boards, committee assignments, department planning, and the organization of annual student exhibitions and publications.

-Working cooperatively with Photography Department faculty to shape an innovative and integrated curriculum.

- Opportunities to work with faculty outside the department to create interdisciplinary courses ensuring that affirmative action, equal opportunity, and diversity are integrally tied to all actions and decisions for which faculty are responsible and which fall within the scope of the Strategic Plan.

Salary Information:

Compensation commensurate with full-time teaching experience, in accordance with the Massachusetts State College Association collective bargaining agreement. Full state employee benefits included.
