We provide clients around the world with packing, crating, transportation and storage. Ship/Art through it diversification of services is able to work with a vast client base. Our clients include Museums, Galleries, Private Collectors and Dealers. We provide services to clients with needs for expert handling, packing and transport of fine arts, antiques and technical equipment.

We are located in South San Francisco and are open Monday thru Friday 9am-5 pm. We are a 15 minute walk from San Bruno BART station and close to the South Airport Blvd Exit off 101.

PRIMARY PURPOSE

Under the direction of the CEO and COO, the Crating Manager’s job duties include fabricating and finishing high quality crates for the transportation of fine art & antiques, from museums, galleries and private collectors. Crate making is a precise and responsible craftsmanship process of stabilizing every artwork to assure its security and safety at any stage of the transportation process.  Working with power tools, attention to detail and experience in the field of woodworking are all preferred requirements. 

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Previous wood working experience a must
  • Daily routines involve building crates from start to finish for unique and high value artworks
  • You must have real wood shop experience. This includes table saws, air nailers, chop saws etc.
  • This position involves a combination of production work but also has a component of very detailed custom work

Supervises and coordinates the following activities within the Crate Shop:

  • Trains and develops staff
  • Supervises the shipping and receiving functions
  • Space planning of all materials including crates, pallets, etc
  • Oversees receiving, unloading and unpacking incoming shipments from vendors
  • Oversees movement of inventory from location to location
  • Supervises proper storage of all inventory, keeping areas neat and orderly at all times
  • Maintains client and carrier relationships
  • Ensures accuracy of all shipments
  • Oversees that crate shop safety procedures are adhered to
  • Maintain adequate levels of supplies to facilitate packing of shipments
  • Provides staff with continual feedback; conducts all performance evaluations on time; recognizes and celebrates exceptional performance and takes corrective action to improve poor performance

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function and responsibility satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability required.

  • Minimum 2-5 years wood shop experience or equivalent relevant experience
  • Experience in handling art works, knowledge of fixings, hanging systems, art transport, packing and storage options
  • Awareness/understanding of the different handling needs of paintings
  • Demonstrates basic skills required to assemble cut parts with little to no supervision
  • Willingness to learn new skills, and strong attention to detail
  • Must be willing and capable to work a flexible schedule
  • Perform recurring activities such as bending, crouching, stooping, stretching and reaching
  • Ability to solve routine questions/problems
  • Ability to follow very detailed instructions and specific protocols to maintain safety of artwork and co-workers
  • Able to identify basic crate building materials and knows the difference between nominal and actual differences. 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to lift 50-60 lbs sustained and up to 100 lbs
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time
  • An ability to work as part of a team and as an individual; good communication skills
  • Ability to physically carry out the work required in lifting/moving artworks
  • Awareness/understanding of supports and frames is a plus
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Required to possess a valid California driver license and a clean driving record at the time and duration of employment
  • Requires each incumbent to complete and pass STA application and verification.
  • Requires background check, employment physical, performance evaluation (lifting test), and/or drug test
  • Status must be maintained for the duration of employment at Ship/Art

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, sit, bend, lift, and use hands. Movement may occur in warehouses and offices.
