The Moth hires for two internship cycles, Spring (January-June) and Fall (July-December). Each cycle we seek four interns—two Event Production Interns, one Archives Intern and one Development Intern. We are looking for applicants with a strong work ethic, a desire to learn new skills in production and a passion for stories and community building through storytelling. Applicants must be able to commit to the full six-month session, we do not accept applications for summer-only interns. Internships are 32 hours per week and take place at our New York City headquarters during office hours (M-F, 10-6) with occasional hours taking place at events around the city. The Moth provides a weekly stipend of $320.

DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring data in CRM database is accurate, up-to-date and clean
  • Researches information about potential foundation/government funders and individual donors/prospects using internet tools
  • Communicates with donors and other members of the public via email, telephone, and at live events
  • Assists in writing foundation/government proposals and reports
  • Assists in all aspects of membership
  • Writes letters of thanks to donors
  • Assists in preparation of all aspects of a fundraising gala
  • Support the office with a variety of administrative tasks
  • Other duties as appropriate

Qualifications:

  • Exemplary customer service
  • Tech savvy; loves to learn new systems
  • Interest in cultivating the skills necessary for fundraising in a non-profit organization
  • Superior writing and internet research abilities
  • Excellent communication skills

LIVE EVENT PRODUCTION INTERNSHIP

Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting in the production of our live Mainstage, SLAM and GrandSLAM events, including attendance at at least two StorySLAMs every month
  • Entering and organizing all post-production SLAM and Mainstage materials for our CRM database and filing system
  • Proofing and assisting in the production of promotional materials  and researching further promotional outlets for Mainstages and GrandSLAMs.
  • Proofing and assisting with promotional materials, calendars and show programs
  • Researching potential venues in new and existing StorySLAM Markets and helping facilitate show launches in new cities
  • Supporting the office with managing phones, The Moth’s info account, and administrative tasks as needed
  • Research projects, as appropriate

For the right applicant, there will be additional opportunities to sit in on Mainstage rehearsals, to participate in regular strategic meetings about the program, to go on venue site visits, and to be exposed to the Moth’s Community & Education programs.

Qualifications:

  • A love of The Moth’s work and mission
  • Experience working in the nonprofit sector and/or the arts preferred
  • Proficiency in Word and Excel; ability to learn CRM Database system
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional organization and administrative skills
  • Ability to switch between independent and collaborative work
  • Creative, self-sufficient, and proactive thinker; detail-oriented and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment

 

ARCHIVES INTERNSHIP

 

The Archives Intern works within The Moth’s Media and Archives Department helping maintain our database of over 30,000 stories from The Moth’s 20-year history, including audio recordings, videos and photos from our live events and radio episodes. The ideal intern is detail-oriented and interested in devising creative solutions to the unique challenges of digital archives management. This internship will help you build skills in cloud computing and metadata creation, also offering a window into how systems management influences the creative curation process at an award-winning international performing arts non-profit.

 

Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee multiple cloud app integrations (including, Box, Formstack, Airtable)
  • Create and update records in our Salesforce database
  • Help edit story transcriptions for publication on our site
  • Potentially assist in a grant-funded, innovative project to build an archives search engine
  • Attend at least one Moth live show each month
  • Other administrative and research tasks as needed

Qualifications:

  • We’re looking for a highly organized individual with a strong interest in digital archives
  • Proficiency in records management is a must
  • Experience with database software (Salesforce, or similar) is a plus
  • Demonstrated interest in how systems work
  • Interest in learning video/audio editing a plus, but not necessary
  • A love of The Moth’s work and mission
