About the Gallery:

Since opening our doors in 1978, Zenith has established deep roots in the nation’s capital and with artists and collectors across America. Throughout our history we’ve pushed boundaries and broken ground with an ever-changing selection of paintings, sculpture, neon, photographs, tapestries and mixed-media pieces that stimulate, engage and have profoundly enhanced our clients’ residential, corporate and public-space environments.

Long at the forefront of the Washington arts scene, we seek out and feature exceptional artists at varying stages of their careers. Many have been with us for 30 years and are now well known and established, while others are young bright lights on the horizon.

Zenith is recognized for its unique mix of contemporary art in all media. The gallery provides high-quality acquisition, consulting, commissioning, appraisal and framing services through its salon gallery off 16th Street NW; Zenith Sculpture Space at 1111 Pennsylvania Ave NW, and via its website. Our website www.zenithgallery.com provides extensive content of art from hundreds of our gallery artists and 14 years of past exhibitions.

About the Internship:

Zenith Gallery is a salon-style gallery, which makes Zenith unique among many contemporary art galleries. As curatorial preferences fluctuate, there has been a revival of the salon style gallery from it’s prominence in the art world as far back as 17th century France. Salon style galleries are beneficial because clients have an accurate way of seeing how art would hang in their own home as well as the gallery being able to show more artwork than in traditional galleries. That being said, interning at Zenith does bring a somewhat different experience than working in a boxy, white wall gallery that you may see in Downtown Washington, or Chelsea, for example. As a nontraditional gallery space, the responsibilities of the intern may also stray from traditional gallery work. Essentially, working at Zenith means both doing traditional gallery work such as making portfolios, using social media and general office duties as well as the experience of working with much more art on display in a very different layout. It’s hard to explain the average day here because there is such a large spectrum of duties, responsibilities, and tasks that may come your way. This means we need an intern who is flexible and able to help out in a variety of different tasks. In return, the intern will have a well-rounded experience about all aspects of work in an art gallery. We tend to also pair interns with tasks that play to their strengths as we see fit. Listed below is a brief list of just some of the responsibilities, and activities an intern would likely engage in, a more comprehensive list is included in the actual application attached below:

· Writing emails, answering phone calls and taking messages

· Proficiency in Word, Excel, and Photoshop

· Working with printers, and fax machines

· Art handling, wrapping, and hanging

· Making price lists, and portfolios for artists and exhibits

· Greeting visitors and giving them tours of the gallery

· Use of art-related websites such as Artsy

· Marketing online, especially using social media!

· Interacting with artists and clients

· Greeting and assisting guests at opening receptions

· Setting up food, and wine for gallery events

· General upkeep and cleaning of gallery space including taking out trash and recycling

· Use of power tools, and hammers when hanging art (and other assorted tasks)

· Trying your very best to help keep Margery (the director) as sane as possible.

This internship is like by far unique and will be both challenging and fun. You will meet artists in the area as well as make connections with prominent in the DC art scene – which will be beneficial if you have interest in pursuing a career in art.

If you have any questions regarding the internship, feel free call Zenith Gallery (202-783-2963) during our opening hours Wednesday – Saturday, 12pm – 6pm and ask to speak to Izzy.
