OVERVIEW
Waterwell, an award-winning Off-Broadway company entering its 15th season, seeks a Managing Director to lead the organization through a new and dynamic phase of growth and maturation.
COMPANY
Founded in 2002 by Tony nominee Arian Moayed and Drama Desk nominee Tom Ridgely, Waterwell is dedicated to the creation of new work and the bold reinterpretation of classics. The companys special blend of music, theater and social dialog has been nominated for three IT awards, a Drama Desk, a New York Magazine Culture Award and Village Voice Best of NYC. Recent work includes the resurrection of lost WWII-era Frank Loesser musicals Blueprint Specials, featuring civilian and military performers and presented onboard the former USS Intrepid as part of the Public Theaters Under the Radar Festival; as well as a dual-language (English/Farsi) adaptation of Hamlet performed by a cast of predominantly Middle Eastern and South Asian actors.
The company also believes strongly in the power of the arts in youth development. Its robust educational arm, the Waterwell Drama Program, has delivered in partnership with the Professional Performing Arts School (PPAS) top-quality, year-round, in-school theater training to over 200 NYC public school students annually since 2010. Partnerships with Manhattan Youth, the New School and others provide rich artmaking experiences to dozens of additional students each year, from middle school through college.
POSITION
The Managing Director will work with Artistic Director Tom Ridgely in a co-leadership model to guide Waterwell, along with the Board of Directors, through this next stage of the companys growth, playing a vital role in strategic planning/implementation, as well as overseeing development, finance, marketing and general management activities.
The Managing Director joins Waterwell at a pivotal moment, as we move from an ensemble-driven, project-based approach to a more mission-centered and season-oriented system of planning. A formal strategic planning process will begin soon after hiring and will likely explore steps toward enhancing both the quality and quantity of productions while continuing to engage larger and more diverse communities, as well as ways of scaling up our educational efforts and engaging with that field more on a national level.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The MD will report directly to the board through the Chair. The central roles will be to:
- Collaborate with the AD and Board on a 5-10 year strategic plan,
- Devise innovative producing models to ensure Waterwells commitment to artistically daring, community-centric programming remains financially sustainable,
- With AD and Board, serve as a key participant in development to ensure Waterwell has the resources to fulfill its mission and implement its strategic plan,
- Build external relationships with potential partners, donors and advocates,
- Serve as a principal public voice and impassioned ambassador for the organization, both locally in NYC and nationally,
- Manage financial and human resources systems for an organization with a budget of >$1M,
- Forge a collegial and collaborative relationship with the Board Chair and other directors,
Inspire and oversee staff and, with AD, ensure a positive and productive work environment at Waterwell.
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will possess the following skills and qualifications:
- Passion for Waterwells distinctly populist vision and values, and a desire to build on its culture of inclusiveness,
- Aptitude for inspiring others via a shared vision,
- Ability to develop a network of respected colleagues and partners,
- Appetite for fundraising, including grant seeking, individual donor cultivation and event planning,
- Excellent written and oral communication,
- Comfort with building and maintaining fiscally responsible budgets,
- Familiarity with the cultural landscape and theater community of New York a plus,
- Willingness to a adopt a schedule that occasionally includes nights and weekends, especially during productions and major fundraising cycles,
- Experience in theater management preferred, though candidates with non-theater performing arts experience and unusually promising recent MFA or MBA graduates will be considered.
COMPENSATION
Salary will be highly competitive with similarly sized and regarded organizations. Benefits will include:
- Medical/vision/dental insurance after six months,
- Paid vacation/holiday/sick/personal days.
