BRIC is a multi-disciplinary non-profit dedicated to presenting art and media programs that reflect Brooklyn’s creativity and diversity. BRIC also provides resources to launch, nurture, and showcase artists and media makers. All of BRIC’s offerings are free or low cost, to advance access to and understanding of arts and media. Each year, upwards of one million people in Brooklyn and citywide are served through BRIC’s programs.

BRIC’s education programs are committed to directly engaging our Brooklyn community in contemporary art and media. Through school residencies, internship programs, and professional development opportunities, BRIC Education provides access to the experience of the creative process and celebrates the artistic spirit.

Purpose of Position:  BRIC is seeking innovative and experienced Teaching Artists with an active creative practice in visual arts and/or media for school day and afterschool media residencies in New York City public schools and community centers, Pre-K through high school, in the following fields:

CONTEMPORARY ART (VISUAL ARTS)

  • Site-specific Installation
  • Mosaic
  • Public Art
  • Digital Photography
  • Textile
  • Mixed Media

YOUTH MEDIA

  • Video Production (narrative, documentary, PSA, etc.)
  • Animation
  • Digital Photography
  • Podcasting

BRIC Teaching Artists implement student-centered arts residencies, using arts and media to build skills and increase student learning, engaging students through creative projects and lessons relevant to their academic studies, needs and learning styles. BRIC currently works in over 40 schools serving over 4,000 students. In addition to school residencies, BRIC Teaching Artists also facilitate professional development workshops, media studio workshops, and family activities.

For school day residencies, BRIC Teaching Artists work alongside classroom teachers to integrate arts instruction into core studies that culminate in projects that are curated for our annual Student Exhibition and Youth Media Festival at BRIC House Gallery. Each residency is unique, and is developed to meet the goals of BRIC and its partners. BRIC residencies generally last from 10 to 34 weeks, and are thoughtfully planned by the BRIC Education team, partner organizations and Teaching Artists.

Key Duties:

  • Meeting with BRIC staff and school partners to determine program needs;
  • Customizing curriculum to effectively integrate with educational goals and learning standards;
  • Facilitating workshops with students, teachers and parents during the school day and afterschool;
  • Maintaining communication with residency partners and BRIC to report curriculum, activities, changes in program design, and assessment;
  • Coordinating transportation of materials and equipment as needed;
  • Completing projects, final reports, and curriculum in a timely manner;
  • Preparing student work for annual BRIC student exhibition.

Qualifications:

  • BA/BFA required, MA/MFA preferred;
  • Complete body of work representing personal artistic practice and exploration;
  • Commitment to youth development and community building, also commitment to supporting authentic youth voice and creative expression;
  • Prior teaching experience in NYC public school settings, curriculum development experience aligned with NYC Blueprint for Learning & Teaching in the Arts a plus;
  • Knowledge of art and/or  film history, as well as contemporary art, film and culture;
  • Ability to connect visual arts/ media to contemporary issues;

CONTEMPORARY ART (VISUAL ARTS)

  • Proficiency in a range of art materials and techniques;
  • Gallery exhibition and installation experience a plus.

YOUTH MEDIA

  • Proficiency in all aspects of the production and post-production process;
  • Strong technical skills and comfort working with current media-making technology (for Video Residencies, skills with HD Video, Adobe Premiere, and Final Cut Pro; for Digital Photography, skills with DSLR, and Photoshop; and for Animation Residencies, skills with iStopMotion or similar programs).

Salary and Schedule

Teaching artists work on a part-time basis, with compensation to be determined based on the nature and term of the school residency. School-based residencies are both during the school-day and after-school hours.
