Position: Visual Arts Gallery Director 

Reports To: Artistic Director 

Status: Part Time, 24 hrs Flexible hours 

Salary for 24 hours per week: $37,440

 

Position Description 

As one of the lead members of our dedicated artistic team this position requires leadership, vision and hands-on management of the daily operation of our art gallery; including internal and external exhibitions, gallery management, administration and finances, events and artist liaison. This position requires knowledge and expertise networking in the local, national, and global arts communities. We are looking for someone that can greatly increase the visibility and profile of our artists’ work locally, nationally, and internationally. This is an exciting opportunity for an arts professional who is driven by the challenge to build a successful art gallery and promote work that is excellent. The goal is to increase the sale of art from our 70+ artists. Providing direction and initiative in all areas of art production, product design, exhibition production. 

Requirements

The Gallery Director is a key position at Interact that requires the ability to work in a creative collaborative and dynamic environment.

  • Master of Fine Arts or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years of art gallery experience such as day-to-day gallery operations, hands-on exhibition curation and installation, art handling, and eCommerce
  • Entrepreneurial skills 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Highly developed social skills: Interpersonal skills are key for the position as one of the Gallery Director’s primary responsibilities is to build working relationships with Interact artists, potential patrons, collectors, curators, guests, and media professionals both locally and nationally.

Job Duties and Responsibilities             

  • Promote the work of Interact’s artists. Meet with artists, review portfolios, discuss their work           
  • Act as Gallery Director and chief curator of Interact Artists: create exhibition schedule for in-house and offsite shows, select artwork, oversee framing, presentation, design, and installation of exhibitions.
  • Work with archivist on documentation of art and support materials.
  • Supervise and provide support for art commissions and entrances in art competitions.
  • Network with museum curators, gallerists and others to promote Interact Artists 
  • • Coordinate with applicable Interact Arts staff on sales, design, and functioning of Interact Gallery 
  • Act as liaison for art sales in Minnesota, in New York, throughout the country, and abroad. 
  • Collaborate with Accounting Department and Archival staff to maintain sales records, artist payments, and inventory 
  • Manage the on-going maintenance of the exhibition spaces
  • Manage art packing, shipping, transportation, and storage
  • Manage, organize, and keep up to date all art inventory with assistance of archivist 
  • Prepare and host art opening receptions and special events
  • Present public lectures, programs and gallery talks and participates in press activities related to exhibitions
  • Work with our grant writer to develop ideas for funding artistic projects.

PR & Communication

  • Manage exhibition and gallery promotion and communications in collaboration with the Advancement Department
  • Network to expand collector base and cultivate opportunities with art collectors, artists, and visitors locally, nationally, and internationally
  • Write press releases and promotional materials in collaboration with Advancement Director 
  • Write bios for artists that are participating in exhibitions 

Managing Team Members

  • Staffing and managing part-time Archival assistant and potential interns
  • Train team members in gallery sales procedures, handling art, installation, etc. 

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Photoshop
  • Proficient in basic sales accounting 
  • Working knowledge in social media marketing and email marketing 
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds.
  • Punctual, reliable professional with strong work ethic and emphasis on creative problem solving
  • Must be able to lift to 30 pounds, climb a ladder, stoop and reach in a variety of physical locations
