Call for Artists

CALL FOR ARTIST PROPOSALS

The San Pedro Waterfront Arts District (Arts District) is seeking artists to design and custom paint eight City of Los Angeles Department of Transportation utility boxes on our Gaffey Great Street, the gateway to San Pedro. The mission of the San Pedro Waterfront Arts District is to promote San Pedro’s authentic character through advocacy, marketing and education activities.

Theme San Pedro’s Past, Present and Future Cultural Assets. We are looking for graphically bold and arresting artwork to capture the attention of the 60,000 car trips traversing Gaffey Street daily. We want to highlight San Pedro’s diverse history and the generations of immigrants who built San Pedro, while looking to the cultural future of our changing town.

Specifications – public art can encourage community pride and beautify the neighborhood. Submitted renderings must be suitable for viewing by all ages and will be reviewed by the Arts District Design Advisory Panel, the Department of Transportation and the CD15 Office.

  • Artwork included on the application must closely resemble the art to be painted on the DOT Box.
  • The DOT must always have access to the components of the box. Locks and control panels on the box must remain free of any art images. The vents must not be covered, and dark colors are discouraged to prevent box overheating.
  • Each box will carry a sticker with a QR code, directing viewers to the Arts District web site.
