The location is spectacular - we are nestled at 750m above sea level, surrounded by snowcapped peaks over 3000m high, ancient forests and cascading waterfalls. There are eagles, lammergeiers, vultures, ibex and bears. Walk out of the residency, and within ten minutes you are completely alone in one of the most beautiful mountain landscapes in Europe. Aulus les Bains is also a spa village - there are hot water springs, and a thermal spa in the village to take advantage of the healing and relaxing properties of the water.

Labelled by Pitchfork as "the best band in the world" and the New York Times as "one of the most original rock bands to have come along in the last decade", Deerhoof is Greg Saunier, Satomi Matsuzaki, John Dieterich and Ed Rodriguez. Kicking off in San Francisco in the mid-90s, the band have evolved through lineups and styles, tirelessly probing the outer limits of rock, pop and noise. They've toured with Radiohead, Flaming Lips, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beck, curated Sonic City festival in Belgium, headlined Big Ears Festival, and released over 20 albums. Like Pitchfork said, best band in the world. Meanwhile, the institutions of modern music academia have slowly but surely focused their gaze on the band - Deerhoof's genre irreverance, unbridled invention and unique approach to ensemble playing cannot be ignored as a valuable asset of the avant-garde.

This workshop is an opportunity to spend five days in the epic Pyrenean mountains with Deerhoof, learning, discussing, developing your playing, building new musical connections and opening your rock band mind. It's about playing technique, improvisation, collaboration, composition, space, interaction and listening - all the things that make an ensemble work. Over five days, a small group of adventurous players will split down into ensembles, develop playing techniques and musical interaction skills, building new work every day under the guidance of the four members of Deerhoof, ending each day with a performance and feedback session. In the downtime we'll hang out, listen to music, watch films, drink wine, swim in the river and hike in the forests and peaks of the Pyrenees.

The workshop is open to people of all musical abilities, and players of all instruments (including traditional rock band stuff but also computers, field recordings or anything else). Throughout the workshop our extensive recording facilities will be available for use, and we'll work towards gathering recordings for a final release on CAMP Editions.

This workshop will be based around non-academic, practical sessions in singing North Indian Raga. There will be instruction in voice culturing and in training the ear to hear specific microtones inherent in the Raga melodies. We will progress from singing and tuning up long tones to learning melodic fragments that compose the raga melodies, and then on to learning traditional "bandesh's" or traditional compositions. All of this progress will be made by learning to copy phrases taught by ear.

We'll examine raga structure and how a raga develops through the progressive series of sections - "alap", "vilambit", "drut". Various talas - rhythm cycles that frame the ragas - will be explained and practiced. We'll examine how improvisation works in Indian music, and a method of how to improvise in these raga melodies will be given. As a composer, Terry will discuss and demonstrate how he has incorporated raga into his compositional activities.

The workshop is open to all levels of ability - all are welcome who have a passion to use their voice as an expressive musical instrument.

Composer and performer Terry Riley is one of the founders - arguably the founder - of musical minimalism. His early works, notably In C (1964), pioneered a form in Western music based on structured interlocking repetitive patterns. The influence of Terry's hypnotic, multi-layered, polymetric, brightly orchestrated Eastern-flavored improvisations and compositions is heard across the span of contemporary and popular music.

Born in California, Terry studied at San Francisco State University, and the San Francisco Conservatory before earning an MA in composition at the UC Berkeley, studying with Seymour Shifrin and Robert Erickson. At UC Berkeley, he met La Monte Young; together they worked with the dancer Anna Halprin. During a sojourn to Europe 1962-64, he collaborated with members of the Fluxus group, playwright Ken Dewey, and trumpeter Chet Baker, and was involved in street theater and happenings. In 1965 he moved to New York and joined La Monte Young’s "Theater of Eternal Music." 1967 was the year of his first all-night concert at the Philadelphia College of Art and he began a collaboration with visual artist Robert Benson. An influential teacher was Pandit Pran Nath, a master of Indian classical voice; Terry appeared in concert with him as tampura, tabla and vocal accompanist for over 25 years. Terry continues to perform in concerts of his music and of Indian classical music, as well as conducting raga-singing seminars. He also appears in concerts with Indian sitarist Krishna Bhatt, saxophonist George Brooks, guitarist Gyan Riley and with virtuoso Italian bassist, Stefano Scodanibbio.

Terry joined the Mills College faculty in 1971. There he met David Harrington of the Kronos Quartet. Their long association led to 13 string quartets, the concerto The Sands (1990), the multimedia choral work commissioned by NASA, Sun Rings (2003), and The Cusp of Magic (2004) with pipa. The Kronos recording of his epic five-quartet cycle, Salome Dances for Peace was selected as the Classical album of the year by "USA Today" and was nominated for a Grammy.

The Palmian Chord Ryddle, a concerto, was premiered in May 2012 by electric violinist Tracy Silverman and The Nashville Symphony led by conductor Giancarlo Guerrero. A subsequent performance occurred at Carnegie Hall. Recent works include Transylvanian Horn Courtship (2008) for string quartet doubling on Stroh instruments, Universal Bridge (2008) for pipe organ, the violin concerto Zephir (2009), and SwarAmant (2012) for violin, guitar, and tabla.

Past commissions include: the orchestral Jade Palace (1991) for Carnegie Hall’s centennial celebration, premiered there by the Saint Louis Symphony and Leonard Slatkin; June Buddhas (1991) for chorus and orchestra, based on Jack Kerouac's "Mexico City Blues," commissioned by the Koussevitsky Foundation; the chamber vocal work What the River Said (1997) by the Norwich Festival; the piano piece in just intonation The Dream (1999) by the Kanagawa Foundation; the concerto for piano and electro-acoustic band Banana Humberto 2000 (2000) commissioned by Musical Traditions, Inc., the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, and Emory University, and premiered and toured by Terry with the Paul Dresher Ensemble; Bruce’s Traveling Machine (2005) for cello and tape, commissioned by the artist Bruce Connor; The Heaven Ladder, Book 6 (Night Music) (2006) for piano 4-hands, commissioned by Sarah Cahill and premiered by Sarah Cahill and Joseph Kubera; Loops for Ancient-Giant-Nude-Hairy Warriors Racing Down the Slopes of Battle (2006) for the Crash Ensemble; the triple concerto SolTierraLuna (2007), co-commissioned by the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and the New Century Chamber Orchestra of San Francisco.

CAMP, a high-altitude residential arts school in the French Pyrenees, has begun announcing its 2020 program of workshops. Now entering its third year of activity, the newly announced program includes five-day residential workshops in music, visual art, filmmaking, photography, VR and literature, with masterclasses led by such luminaries as Matthew Herbert, Julia Kent, Aviva Rahmani, Chris Watson, Simon Armitage, Gabrielle Bell, Roedelius, Phill Niblock, Elliott Sharp and others.

Bill Drummond's creative actions, works, texts and moments of influence are too numerous to list. But let's have a go - theatrical carpenter, set designer for the first staging of The Illuminatus Trilogy, guitarist for Big In Japan (with Budgie, Holly Johnson, Ian Broudie, etc), producer for Echo & the Bunnymen and The Teardrop Explodes, Justified Ancient of Mu Mu, Zoo Records founder, 50% of KLF, winner of the 1992 BRIT Award for "Best British group" (later that night KLF left a dead sheep outside an aftershow party with a note: "I died for you - bon appetit"), founder of the K Foundation, well known burner of £1,000,000 on the isle of Jura, author of such influential texts as "How to be an Artist", "The Manual (How to Have a Number One the Easy Way)" and "$20,000", distributor of soup (as art), distributor of cake (as art), shoe-shiner (on the streets of Venice during the biennale), founder of No Music Day, creator of The17, Select Magazine's Coolest Person in Pop 1992, and co-composer of "What Time Is Love?", "3 a.m. Eternal", "Last Train to Trancentral" and "Justified and Ancient"... that's just for starters, click some of those links and go down the rabbit hole.

"LET YOUR LONE RANGER RIDE" is the title of one of Bill Drummond's Twelve Steps, which grew out of his Ten Commandments of Art published in the Guardian in 2014. Bill is currently in the course of completing a 12 year world tour - each year of the tour, he daubs the title of one of these Twelve Steps under Spaghetti Junction in Birmingham (see photo above, which is by Tracey Moberly). The forthcoming film BEST BEFORE DEATH, will document parts of the tour. Elsewhere in the world of film, Bill is currently engaged in a nine-year tour of The Atlantic Archipelago (aka The British Isles), screening his film "IMAGINE WAKING UP TOMORROW AND ALL MUSIC HAS DISAPPEARED" (see trailer above) once a year in places selected for their linguistic history. There's also a veritable mine of one-minute talks by Bill at www.60sixtyseconds.com - one film is activated each day.

This workshop will contain discussion, debate, arguing; the making of things that no passer-by would recognise as art; the making of art that will require interaction with the unforewarned local population; regret; compromise; the creation and destruction of doctrines; pain; relief; maybe some joy, and breakfast. And soup, made by Bill.

Working in the classroom, outdoors in the landscape, in the studio, through group and individual guidance, this session will embrace the principles of free thought, metacritical assessment of art and music, and avoidance (and simultaneous generation) of absurdity.

John Burgess has worked as a director and producer of new plays for over forty years. He helped found the National Theatre Studio with Peter Gill in 1984 and he was Head of New Writing at the National theatre 1989 -1994. Writers whose work he has premiered include Nicholas Wright, Sarah Daniels, Jonathan Harvey, Judith Johnson, David Spencer, Stephen Wakelam and Meredith Oakes. His productions have been seen at the National Theatre, the Royal Court, the Donmar, the Bush, Stratford East, Riverside Studios and BBC Television as well as abroad in Switzerland, Scandinavia and the US.

Since 2011 John has been running a highly successful writers' group whose graduates have had their work performed at the National Theatre, in the West End, at the Soho Theatre, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Arcola, BBC Radio 4, the Traverse Theatre Edinburgh, the Finborough and Hampstead Theatre and published by Faber and Nick Hern Books. These five days are about the practice not the theory of playwriting.

Days will be divided into 2 intense two-hour group sessions with assigned reading and set exercises in between, making for eight (or even nine) hour days focused on the practical business of writing for the stage. This second five day period builds on skills acquired during the first week, exploring further, more complex topics such as images, letters, science, group scenes, history, work, and the rhetoric of persuasion

Participants will be guided towards finding individual solutions to specific problems of writing for the stage, enabling beginners to find firm ground beneath their feet and giving the more experienced an opportunity to refine and extend their skills.

Following the success of last year's course CAMP are now offering two consecutive weeks with a second follow-up five day period exploring further more complex topics such as images, science, group scenes, history, work, and the rhetoric of persuasion. If you would like to attend both weeks, we encourage you to apply for a grant here and mention in your application that you intend to come to both courses. Applicants attending both weeks will be awarded a grant towards the cost of the second week.
