Banff International Literary Translation Centre (BILTC) | Literary Arts

Overview

The Banff International Literary Translation Centre (BILTC) offers student, emerging, and professional literary translators a period of uninterrupted work on a current project. Participants will work in a trilingual environment with consulting translators and peers, resulting in a mutually beneficial learning experience.

Participants will work individually and as a group with a faculty of accomplished translators of French, English, and Spanish. Participants will also have an opportunity to consult with the author whose work they are translating.

Spoken Word | Literary Arts

Overview

Banff Centre’s Spoken Word program is the first of its kind, offering an unrivalled setting for artists to explore and develop their voices and career paths. 

This intensive residency provides space to write and time to develop strong performance dynamics. Participants will benefit from mentoring, performance opportunities, studio recording time, access to special events, and engagement with a vibrant network of international artists – all amidst the breathtaking Canadian Rockies.

World-class faculty present challenging workshops on topics from the spoken word tradition such as history, composition, performance, multimedia, production, business, musicality, orality, sound, spirit, language, body, and theatre.

The Banff Artist in Residence (BAiR) program is designed for visual artists to focus on their own practice in a supportive learning environment. Participants are encouraged to explore new ideas, create, self-direct their research and time, and cultivate new directions in their work — all while surrounded by a community of peers within Banff Centre’s spectacular mountain setting.

Banff International Workshop in Jazz & Creative Music

Overview

This three-week program brings together emerging artists from around the world to work and study with Co-Artistic Directors Vijay Iyer and Tyshawn Sorey, as well as internationally acclaimed guest mentors. The goal is to learn, converse, build, experiment, refine, and transform — to reimagine the state of the art. This program is one of the most intensive that Banff Centre offers, and continues our 40-year history of incredible jazz exploration.  

What does the program offer?

The Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music is designed to help emerging musicians become performers/composers of consequence in the world, with an emphasis on community and collaboration.

EQ: Evolution of the String Quartet | Summer Music 2019

Overview

Led by violinist Aisslinn Nosky and featuring four of the most exciting string quartets to be found anywhere — JACK, Eybler, Parker, and Bozzini quartets — along with an extraordinary group of soloists, composers, and scholars, Evolution of the String Quartet (EQ) explores the string quartet lineage from Haydn to music made in Banff by and for the faculty and participants of EQ.
