Landscape Competition at the Art League of Long Island

Deadline for Submissions: May 22, 2020 by 4pm

This exhibition will concentrate on landscape imagery, embracing seascapes, cityscapes, garden scenes and woodland, for example, and may be rendered both realistically or abstractly.

Open to artists residing in Suffolk, Nassau, Brooklyn and Queens. Entry is limited to five works not previously exhibited in the Art League of Long Island's Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery, one of which may be selected by the juror for admission. 2D & 3D original work in any medium may be submitted, including photography and fine craft. Sorry, no videos.

Prizes Details: 

$300 Awards of Excellence and Honorable Mentions of one year memberships in ALLI will be given at the discretion of the judge.

The BIG Picture: Large Works Competition

The Art League of Long Island is thinking BIG with its second juried exhibition of large works, titled “The Big Picture”, set to take place March 7 to April 24. Artists from Suffolk, Nassau, Brooklyn, and Queens are invited to submit applications to show their large works in the Art League's spacious Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery. The submission deadline is February 7, 2020.  Exhibition juror Charles A. Riley, Ph.D., Director of the Nassau County Museum of Art will select the participating artists and artist awards.  

Two-dimensional work may not exceed 7 feet in any direction. Works larger than 7 feet wide, please contact the Art League Gallery Coordinator at (631) 462-5400 x232 to discuss. Minimum size 36 inches in both height and width. Three-dimensional work may not exceed 7 feet high and may not exceed 100 lbs. Again, please call to discuss if there are any questions.

About the juror: Before becoming Director of the Nassau County Museum of Art, Dr. Riley had a long association with the Museum as both a curator-at-large and a presenter of lectures in conjunction with the Museum’s exhibitions. As a curator, he contributed to the museum’s Picasso, Surrealism and Abstract Expressionists exhibitions, Dr. Riley has also curated exhibitions in Taiwan, Berlin, Amsterdam, Lausanne, New York and on Long Island.  Recently, Dr. Riley published his latest book, “Free as Gods:  How the Jazz Age Reinvented Modernism,” bringing the number of books he’s authored to 32. Other books include “The Jazz Age in France,” “The Art of Peter Max,” “Art at Lincoln Center,” “The Arts and the World Economy,” “Color Codes” and “The Saints of Modern Art.” His next book, a study of Rodin in Chinese and English, will be published by the Chimei Museum.  Dr. Riley’s monographs include those on Ben Schonzeit, Fritz Bultman and Peter Max, with most published by Abrams.  As a sought-after guest commentator on the art market as well as other topics, Dr. Riley has appeared on CNN, NBC, MSNBC, CBS, ABC and Fox News.  Born and raised in Manhasset, Dr. Riley is a summa cum laude graduate of Princeton University and received his Ph.D. from The Graduate Center of CCNY

Call for Fine Art Photographers: “This Land is Our Land” Exhibition at the Art League of Long Island

Photographers from the NY Tri-State area, including amateur and practicing photographers, are invited to submit applications to participate in the Art League of Long Island’s upcoming juried photo exhibition titled “This Land is Our Land”.  The exhibit is scheduled to be on display January 11 through February 8, 2020 in the Art League’s spacious Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery.  The deadline to submit applications is Friday, December 6, 2019. 

The Art League asks photographers to submit images that illustrate what makes us American. What does your America look like? These images could be of iconic buildings, scenic landscapes, peopled events, family images, images that show a significant event or idea that is an important part of America. How do you express your America?

The exhibition juror is Sandra Carrion, Instructor at Nassau Community College.  She served as director of Soho Photo Gallery and is the creator of the popular International Krappy Kamera Competition and Exhibition held annually at Soho Photo in Manhattan. Ms. Carrion is also a founding member of fotofoto Gallery in Huntington, NY and 9 East Contemporary Art Guild in Huntington, NY.  Sandra Carrion’s Photography has been recognized for its innovation and artistry throughout her career. Using techniques both traditional and contemporary, Sandra meticulously strives to reinvent her approach discovering underlying worlds hidden in what we walk past every day.

The Art League of Long Island (est. 1955), located in Dix Hills, is a not-for-profit visual arts organization that offers classes and workshops for children and adults, from beginner to advanced levels.  The Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery hosts a dozen exhibits per year, featuring contemporary works by many local artists.

Cash awards and one-year memberships will be given for Awards of Excellence and one year memberships will be awarded to Honorable Mentions. All awards will be given at the discretion of the judge.

The news can leave us a bit down these days and the Art League wants you to lift our spirits! Don’t we all need a good laugh? Recent studies show that indulging your sense of humor can help you live a longer, healthier life. Laughing not only eases stress, it promotes social bonding, and lowers blood pressure. Your camera lens may capture an image that promotes a smile, giggle or, perhaps, a belly laugh. Silly animals, goofy kids, a wild event, a good laugh will recharge your batteries!

Open to artists residing in New York, Connecticut or New Jersey, 18 years or older.

Images created via any form of photography will be accepted for consideration (i.e. shot on film, shot digitally, unaltered shots, alternative process, mixed media, digital manipulations, montages, photograms, etc.) as long as part of the image is photographically created and the photo was taken by the artist.

Resident Artist Membership Opportunities at Art League of LI

The Resident Artist Membership is an opportunity for 6 Long Island Based visual and interdisciplinary artists to develop their craft at the Art League of Long Island. Become a leader in a creative community that has thrived for over 60 years!

Utilize our state of the art studios, and extensive offerings of classes to expand your skill set. This is a great opportunity for those artists who are interested in finding mentorship, learning a new medium, and developing the skills and confidence to teach! The Artist Residency Membership will culminate in the opportunity to teach a One Day Workshop that is open to the general public.

The Resident Artist membership includes the following benefits: 

• 50 free hours of class time per semester- Participants will be able to attend up to 50 hours of instructed class time each semester for the duration of the Artist Resident Membership. Classes must reach minimum enrollment, and may not exceed maximum enrollment in order to be eligible for this offer. Resident Artist Members will be required to pay in full for additional instructed class time hours that exceed the 50 hours.

• Opportunity to teach a One-Day Workshop in the Summer of 2020- Use the education during your year of study at the Art League to design a one-day workshop that expresses your point of view and strengths as an artist through teachable skills!

• Unlimited use of Open Studios during scheduled open studio time and additional hours in which studios are unused.

• Free admission to ticketed Art League events and lectures

• Access to the Lorraine Graves Grace Memorial Library of over 2,500 art books

• Promotion of you and your work on the Art League website and social media!

The Resident Artist Membership is a one-year membership to the Art League of Long Island that lasts from June 1, 2019- May 31, 2020.

Cost of Artist Residency Membership for selected artists: $300**

Artists selected*** for the Resident Artist Members will be expected to take on a leadership role in community building at the Art League and integrate with our student body. Resident Artist members will be required to: 

• Volunteer at the Art League for a minimum of 6 hours per month- Monitor an open studio, assist with hanging a show, help out in our office!

• Maintain a blog on the Art League website- Document your experiences as a Resident Artist Member here at the Art League- in class and beyond- through monthly blog posts. Share about your work, your process, and what you’ve been learning!

• Work toward teaching a one-day workshop during the semester immediately following the completion of your membership (Summer 2020). This will include submitting a workshop proposal and drafting a syllabus.

• Attend Resident Artist Membership meetings (Schedule TBD)

The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. 

The Art Leagueof Long Island hopes, through this exhibition, to encourage understanding of each other and move beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual.
