Artist Studio - Residency in Puicheric. The residency in Puicheric is ideal for 1 artist or a couple who want/s to spend one to 2 month of time to focus and investigate their practice in a quiet Mediterranean surrounding. The residency offers different spaces suitable for painting, drawing, writing, and also for installation and sculpture projects in a  sculpture garden ( jardin d'artistes) on the canal du midi.

Art Research Residency is specially designed to enable participants to evaluate their individual places as artists and situate their artistic exploration and practice within both the historical and contemporary context of art production and dissemination in Paris. 

This immersive two-week artist residency session offers a stimulating experience of intercultural exchange, research and professional development. Artists have an opportunity to build lasting connections with the fellow residents and expand their network of Paris-based arts professionals and organizations. 

During this residency, artists explore different artistic neighbourhoods of Paris: Montparnasse, Montmartre, Belleville, and Marais where we visit ​historic artist studios, many of which are normally closed to the public, as well as the art academies, galleries and meeting places where the ideas that shaped modern art as we know it were formed. 

To foster meaningful encounters and connections, this residency also provides participants with  the opportunity to meet local artists, art historians, and gallerists working in Paris today. Group visits are organized to relevant arts and culture institutions and fairs. 

In addition to professional visits, we also host facilitated group discussion sessions with Paris-based curators, who offer portfolio readings and mentorship to the artists. To further encourage the exchange of ideas and skills, we offer shared work space and invite artists to propose talks / workshops related to their practice.

At the end of the residency artists have an opportunity to participate in an Open Studio event to showcase their work for the local public and international community of the Centre as well as arts professionals attending the event.

AR & VR ART WITH SUTU AND PAISLEY SMITH

When Google's Tilt Brush launched in 2016, digital artists hurled themselves at it - with its powerful control of textures, volumes and geometry, Tilt Brush was rapidly proven as the most versatile tool around for creating immersive virtual reality artwork, environments and experiences. The same year, Bjork launched "Bjork Digital", her ground-breaking exhibition of 360-degree VR music videos accompanying tracks from her album Vulnicura. It was a pinnacle year for VR, but Google were stepping into a rich, existing scene - artists had been working towards the creation of VR works since Morton Heilig's Sensorama (1956), Myron Krueger's VIDEOPLACE (1975), the StereoGraphics company's experiments throughout the 80s, SEGA VR and Nintendo Virtual Boy in the 90s, and the arrival of sophisticated and lightweight VR tech in the early 2010's.

The current generation of hardware and software allow for the fast, fluid creation of VR worlds (and the insertion of AR elements into the real world) which can be mass-experienced, blurring the limits of gaming, reality, storytelling and art. Reality can be seamlessly augmented with digital artworks, distinct virtual realities can be networked, shared and adapted by audiences, the artist becomes world-maker, the audience is no longer passive; in this brave new world, art does not reflect life - art forms the myriad worlds in which life takes place.

Sutu (aka Stuart Campbell) uses art and technology in new ways to tell stories. He has been commissioned by the likes of Marvel, Google and Disney to create VR art for properties such as Doctor Strange and Ready Player One. He has also created three VR documentaries; Inside Manus for SBS, Mind at War for Ryot Films and The Battle of Hamel for the Australian War Memorial. He's known for his interactive comics including Nawlz, Neomad, Modern Polaxis and These Memories Won't Last. He holds a Honorary Doctorate of Digital Media from Central Queensland University, is a 2017 Sundance Fellow and is the co-founder of EyeJack, an Augmented Reality company.

Paisley Smith is a Canadian filmmaker & virtual reality creator based in Los Angeles. She created Homestay, an interactive VR documentary produced by the National Film Board of Canada Interactive, with Jam3. She received the 2018 Sundance Institute and Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Fellowship for her forthcoming VR experience "Unceded Territories", a collaboration with acclaimed artist and VR pioneer Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun; she's a visiting artist at USC's Mobile & Environmental Media Lab, led by Scott Fisher, and is admin of the thriving Women in VR/AR Facebook group.

Over the course of the week, this workshop will follow two twin trajectories - split into small groups, participants will divide their time equally between two different but complimentary sides to the VR/AR creative process, working towards the creation of new work, formation of new collaborative relationships, and honing of VR painting and creation skills.

Sutu will lead sessions in VR painting using Tilt Brush, exploring the painting process, filming the resulting work, and outputting 2D and 360 films. He will show how 360 content can be exported to 3D formats, for further use in other programs such as Unity. Advanced techniques covered will include creation of 3D scans for import into Tilt Brush.

Paisley will lead participants through a world-building process, where details of your story-world are established. From the basic seed of a world, brought to the session by each participant, Paisley will help you to imagine what that world would look like in VR, working to create a prototype of the world using real-life model making techniques before moving into VR.

You don't need prior experience of VR to take part - by the end of the session, you will have developed the skills, tech knowledge and increased imaginative potential to create new VR worlds, artworks and narratives.

Climate change, Trump, Brexit, the rise of the right wing, increasing poverty and the increasingly desperate thrashing of late-stage capitalism - the old debate of the artist as societal mirror or social pioneer is becoming more and more obsolete as the reality becomes clearer - there is no political art, there is no activist art - all art is political, all art is politically active. The only question is - what kind of social statement is the artist making? The production of decorative canvases intended to adorn the walls of the wealthy is an active social statement. The creative hijacking of corporate advertising and communications is another.

This session will examine the responsibility of the artist in our epoque, and the opportunities for protest and social change available to active, creative individuals and collectives. It will be carried out by three of the most dynamic collectives active in the diverse fields of humanitarian / anti-capitalist / anti-corporate art: Adbusters, Brandalism and the Center for Political Beauty.

Brandalism is an international collective of artists that challenge corporate power in public space around the world. Corporate advertising influences every aspect of our modern lives: from how we feel about ourselves; our bodies; our understandings of gender, race and class; through to our perceptions of others and the world we live in. Building resistance and resilience to corporate power is at the heart of the culture wars in the 21st century so with nothing more than high-vis jackets, special keys, and shared creative principles we create the world's largest ad takeovers that hold corporate power to account. Brandalism will share tactics and approaches that allow diverse artists to hack the city, challenge corporate power, and get away clean. Expect a deep dive into a range of forms of critical public art and the socio-political history of each. We'll explore solo vs collective actions, subversive tactics and more. Brandalism will also provide practical (action-led) trainings, ensuring participants have a range of resources that enable all participants to begin hacking the city where they live.

Adbusters is a global network of artists, activists, writers, musicians, designers, poets, philosophers, and punks trying to pull off a radical transformation of the current world order. Our media foundation publishes a bi-monthly magazine and invents cultural campaigns that explore the erosion of the mental and physical environment by commercial forces.

As artists, you hold the power of persuasion and perspective changing. Through visual communication, you influence the way people think, feel, and act. How will you employ your skills for radical good and resist the pull of the corporate consumerist tide? Dayna Mahannah and Maggie McPhee are the campaign and project managers at Adbusters magazine. Their recent campaign, the First Things First Project, zeroes in on the ethics of the design industry and its responsibility to humanity, the economy, and the environment.

Adbusters is keen to express, through this workshop, theoretical and actionable skills inspired by the themes of expectations (and the value of subverting them), non-linear chronology (structural anarchy), and responsibility. Using the FTF Project, as well as historical and contemporary design revolutions, as examples of small scale resistance with huge impacts, you will be accoutred with the knowledge to culture jam any space. The Center for Political Beauty (ZPS) is an assault team that establishes moral beauty, political poetry and human greatness while aiming to preserve humanitarianism. The group's basic understanding is that the legacy of the Holocaust is rendered void by political apathy, the rejection of refugees and cowardice. It believes that Germany should not only learn from its History but also take action. For their part in the session, ZPS representatives Gabriela Langholf and Lotta Dorte will work with the group to form new ways to put humanistic ideals into action, looking at the ZPS's past works and intellectual foundations, then taking the results forward to create new concepts and help participants bring their own ideas into action.

la maison neuve artist residency - Ardèche

Annex:art is pleased to offer its annual La Maison Neuve Artist Residency, which takes place during the month of June. This residency program, which is being offered in cooperation with Sol 66, is located in the beautiful Ardèche region of south-central France - about 75 miles from Lyon, France. The residency program is open to creative individuals working in any genre, including visual art, music and literature.
