Our gallery is situated in the Exarchia / Neapoli area of Athens, Greece on a hip street “Askipilou”. The area is the center of art and culture in Athens, it has a thriving arts scene and community. Exarchia has an edgy alternative vibe, its streets decorated with politically charged murals and lined with anarchist bookshops and stores selling rare vinyl and vintage antiques. Bars and clubs host live music, including rembetika, jazz and punk acts. For night life and the arts, entertainment and contemporary culture it is the place to be in Athens, Greece.

The Gallery is an open plan 100sqm space with a small bar, library and chill area and small photography studio / projection room.

It is in a very central location with access from a main road, it has lots of natural light and double glass frontage so it makes for a very bright exhibiting space.

How the exhibits work:

At Silk Gallery we offer 3m of wall space for a 1 month (4 week) exhibition. You work will be curated alongside another 3/4 photographers from around the world to exhibit at our space. We will have an opening evening for each exhibition with press attendees, we will have private viewings as well as local and international coverage of each event event.

All works will be available for sale in the gallery and via the website online.

The exhibition program includes:

4 week exhibition at Silk Gallery
Private view/press viewings and other publicity
Design and printing of invitations, mail out and social media invites
Curation & Installation of works
Photography of work / installation to be featured online and in press
Featured work & artist information on www.siilkgallery.com and social medias
Opening event with music and drinks sponsor
Pop up events throughout the month at the gallery space

Payment & Pricing:

The price per 3m wall space is €300 for 4 weeks exhibition as well as having work featured in the online alongside and interview and shared on social media platforms and in local press. Shared with magazines, press and blogs as part of the press release. We take 0% commission on works sold.

If you are unable to attend the opening - works can either be delivered to Asklipiou 73, Athens, 114 71, Greece.
We can also organize printing in house and if you are looking for external funding we are happy to send an invitation after confirmation of exhibiting to support any applications.

Onassis AiR Open Call 2020/21: The Infinite Rehearsal in Four Movements

ONASSIS AiR, the (inter)national artistic research residency program in Athens, invites artists, curators, designers, activists, collectives, educators, lawyers, performance and film makers, economists, agitators, philosophers, and other practitioners to apply for 2020/21 Open Call: The Infinite Rehearsal in Four Movements, which runs between September 2020 and May 2021.

Fall 2020: Identities Annihilated
Movement I: September 14-October 25, 2020
Movement II: November 2-December 13, 2020

Spring 2021: Everything Equally Evolved
Movement III: February 17-March 31, 2021
Movement IV: April 7-May 19, 2021

Inspired by the title of a novel by Wilson Harris, The Infinite Rehearsal in Four Movements is conceived as a collective program focused on two research areas we find urgent to explore. Each Movement Group of five to six participants will engage in a collective “rehearsal,” bringing their own “instrument” in the form of their existing practice that clearly engages with one of the research topic areas in a radical way.

Fall 2020 & Spring 2021 Movement Groups will have one convener each—a practitioner in their own right, with an in-depth knowledge of the research topic explored, who will provide a framework for the two Movement Groups each will convene, in the form of possible readings, meetings with other practitioners, research trips, workshops, tools, etc.

Fall 2020: Identities Annihilated will be convened by performance theorist Hypatia Vourloumis. During Movement I & Il, we will, following Edouard Glissant, seek to attend to the ways in which identities cannot be reduced or made transparent. We will ask: ‘how are we all entangled, in the quantum physics’ sense, in a planetary "difference without separability" as Denise Ferreira da Silva writes? How are we always already “singular-plural” (Jean-Luc Nancy), in the elsewhere and otherwise? How can we destroy the fixed notions and categories of separation inherent to racial capitalism through the aesthetics of a transformative mode of history and time, through the aesthetic imagination and its materializations as transformative and abolitionist force?

Spring 2021: Everything Equally Evolved will be convened by writer and artist James Bridle in collaboration with Vessel. During Movement III & IV we will collectively explore some of these, and other questions: How can the tools we have at hand be reimagined to bring us down to Earth? How do we reassert the importance of community while building solidarity with the more-than-human world? What would it look like to take the intelligence of animals, plants, and ecosystems as seriously as we take the intelligence of smart machines? What is the relationship between distributed networks and distributed power? How do we practically engage with sensoriums other than our own? And what is vital about doing so here and now, on the edge of the Mediterranean and other, possible futures?

The working language of Fall 2020 & Spring 2021 research groups is English. All accepted participants will receive a research fee, housing & travel to/from Athens if from abroad, collective research budget, and other resources.

The House That Became a Home (2019/20)
Established by the Onassis Foundation in September 2019, Onassis AiR opened the doors of an empty building in the center of Athens to house a community of peers from Greece and abroad. Today, after six months of inhabiting this space, filling it with hours of thinking, talking, reading, testing, and making as well as eating together, Onassis AiR has become a home. This house now belongs to more than 30 artists, curators and art practitioners, who between September 2019 and June 2020, are supported through four existing modules: The Critical Practices Program, (Inter)national Artistic & Curatorial Research Program,  Exchange Residencies Program, and Emergency Fellowships Program.

We here at SIILK GALLERY are looking for artists from all walks of life for around the world for our 2020 residency program. We have July, August and December still available in 2020 and January & February in 2021

With the success of our current Gallery throughout 2019 we will be launching a new exhibition space in 2020. This has given us the opportunity to transform our current gallery into a residency self contained studio and exhibition space.

The residency will consist of a 4 week running program with accommodation where you can live and work from the space in Athens, Greece. Use the place for a solo show for the 4 weeks or use it like an open studio, run workshops, talks, utilize the space in whichever way you want.

At the end of each 4 weeks there will be an opening night showcasing the works produced in that time featured at the main Silk Gallery space for an additional 4 weeks. Your works will also be featured in our online gallery for the new website of our mother gallery - www.siilkgallery.com. We will also do a feature / interview with you leading up to the residency.

The Gallery is spread over 2 floors to exhibit in and an upstairs self contained studio for our residents..

It is in a very central location with access from a main road, it has a full 2 story glass double frontage so it makes for a very bright exhibiting space.

How the residency work:

4 week accommodation at Sillk Residents Gallery or full use of the 3 floors space (Living space, studio and storage).
Private view/press viewings and other publicity
Design and printing of invitations, mail out and social media invites
Photography of work for catalogue, website, press and online store

4 week long exhibition at the main Silk Gallery premises following the residency.

Payment & Pricing:

The price for the 4 week residency program is €600. This will be 4 weeks full use of the space and a following 4 week long exhibition of works produced during your stay. If artists wish to stay longer this can be discussed.

We take 0% commission on works sold throughout the duration of the artists stay.

The Mudhouse Residency is currently accepting applications for the 2020 Residency season!

There will be three residency sessions in the summer of 2020; June 8 - 22, June 29 - July 13, July 20 - August 3. The next deadline to apply is March 15, 2020. We will review the next round of applications and notify all applicants of their status April 1, 2020. We are accepting 15 artists for each session. 

The Mudhouse Residency is designed to provide a cultural immersion: living, working and dining in the mountain village of Agios Ioannis. The residency is inclusive to a number of artistic disciplines, with the facilities to accommodate studio artists, photographers, writers, choreographers and composers.

For studio artists our facilities include 24 hour access to an open format studio space in the heart of the village. Dancers and choreographers are provided use of a separate practice space with athletic flooring. Access to the Music house concert hall and grand piano is available to one composer-in-residence per session. The residency also provides non-studio artists with the time and structure to focus on a non-studio based project, be it a novel, screenplay, video, or photographic series. 

The Mudhouse Residency includes the accommodations of the artist for the duration of the Residency, as well as breakfast, lunch and dinner each day within the village. Additionally, artists-in-residence may choose to participate in studio workshops and group day trips. Artists are invited to present a slideshow lecture or reading on their work and participate in a closing exhibition.

We here at SIILK GALLERY are looking for photographers from all walks of life from around the world for our new 100sqm gallery space opening in March 2020.

After the success of our current Gallery space we are opening the permanent home for Siilk. The place is bigger, better, brighter and more bad ass.

Each exhibition will consist of a 4 week running program with an opening night and pop up events throughout the month at out gallery in the heart of Athens. Your works will also be featured in our online zine - www.siilkgallery.com & will do a feature / interview with you. Exhibitions have been featured in magazines here in Athens such as Athens Voice, Lifo, Ozon Magazine, 020 & Frapress.
