Traces

Deadline for submissions: Jan 15, 2024

Juror: Jeff Curto

Prints due: Feb 23, 2024

Exhibition: March 8 - March 29, 2024

Even the most mundane human activity leaves evidence of its existence. Old shopping lists, a once-loved stuffed animal, fragments of an old wedding dress, all speak of the passage of time. Larger human activities leave boarded-up storefronts, crumbling infrastructure. No matter the scale, they all leave a nostalgic hint of an irretrievable past and, ultimately, of our mortality.

For this exhibition, we seek images that hint of humans come and gone by the traces left behind.

For our purposes, a portal can be an architectural feature (gate, window, doorway, mirror, tunnel) that frames or isolates or adds dimension to an image. In a fictional sense, a portal can become a magical doorway through time and space. Alone or in combination, they hold unlimited creative possibilities for photographers.

For “Portals: Windows, Mirrors, and Doors”, we're looking for images that use these devices in intriguing ways. All capture methods and processes are welcome.

Henri Cartier-Bresson describes the decisive moment as the singular moment when the elements of motion and composition coalesce into a unified whole. It is a moment in which the photographer organizes the elements of the image — its structure, light, motion, a gesture, shifting light, a fleeting expression — and captures it in perfect equilibrium.

A great portrait reveals something of the depth, history, and emotional state of the subject, at least as captured in a single moment in time. Although many portraits zero in on the face, many fine images don't show the face at all, instead using light, gesture, context, and other nuances of expression to create an informative portrait.
