Inspired by an Object

In 1964, Jasper Johns wrote himself a note: “Take an object. Do something to it. Do something else to it.” Since then, this set of instructions has referred to artwork that uses everyday objects and other non-fine art materials and describes the revolutionary approaches to art-making that developed from the early 20th century to the late 1950’s,1960’s, and beyond. For this exhibit, artists are invited to submit work in any medium and in any genre including abstract. However, an object must be used as the primary subject and inspiration of the work.

Womyn's Werq

In Honor of Women’s History Month, WOMYN’S WERQ

An Open Call for an Old School, LGBTQIA-friendly, Radical Feminist Art Exhibition

This exhibition will be a hybrid of both virtual and onsite components. An open call to all who identify as radical feminists for two-dimensional and three-dimensional art works, and short video art pieces serving as visual narratives based on the mantra that the personal is political. What embodies radicalism on an artistic level, is it the artist’s engagement with protest, activism, cultural organizing? Is it the materials used or the content the artist takes up? Show us the manifestations of the work that fueled your survival through the past 4 years and preserved your hope for a brighter future!

Privilege, Power and Everyday Life

Privilege, Power and Everyday Life

Microaggressions are defined as subtle, intentional — and oftentimes unintentional — everydayinteractions or behaviors that communicate hostile, derogatory or negative racial messages orassumptions toward historically marginalized groups.

“You are so articulate.” Presumes that black people are not usually capable of competent conversation.

“Who are you? Do you live here?” Asking someone to identify themself in their own garagehome or car and prove they ‘belong’ sends a message they are not welcome.

,“Can I touch your hair?” Or worse touching without even asking. Curiosity is ok but invadingsomeone’s personal space is not. This can make someone feel like they are an animal on display.

inSide Out

Artists are invited to submit proposals for artwork to be installed in the display windows on Montclair's main thoroughfare, adjacent to the Studio Montclair Gallery. Windows measure 2.2 ft. deep, 23 ft. long, and approximately 7 ft. tall. Each window has an electrical outlet for motorized installations, LED lighting on a photocell that is automatically lit from dawn to dusk, and an alarm system. All the glass has been treated with a UV coating. We are looking for exciting and thought-provoking site-specific installations that will be easily visible to street traffic.
