IncuArts invites artists to submit work for Past/ Present/ Future- an exhibition exploring how time, experience, and history impact us.

 

Who writes history? Are we simply repeating ourselves? How does the past impact the present and future? Whose narrative is being told? What future are you fighting for? What is your story? Has your story been ignored by the collective mainstream?

Artists exploring ideas related to personal narrative, history, cultural issues, environmental issues, inclusion v exclusion, and social activism are encouraged to apply.

Women, BIPOC, LGBTQA+, and other community members who embody these experiences, and whose stories have been excluded from our cultural narrative are strongly encouraged to apply.

Artists of all media are encouraged to apply.

Brooklyn artist Sunny Chapman is pleased to announce the opening of The Birdhouse Gallery, a miniature gallery of tiny contemporary art. Located at street level at 499 E. Front Street, the gallery is about the size of a Little Library or a large birdhouse.

The inaugural show, A Certain Blue, will feature a group of notable contemporary artists from New York City and beyond. All the miniature artworks will feature the color blue. The opening party will be outdoors on Saturday May 15 from 2 until 6pm. The show will be viewable during daylight hours from May 15 until June 15.

Curator Sunny Chapman is a NYC artist who has shown her work in NYC area galleries and is represented by Pinkwater Gallery in Kingston and Curina Art in New York City. Chapman has a home in Hancock and an art studio in the house at 499 E. Front St.

Solo Show in The d’Art Center’s Vault

Exhibit your work in a unique space in the heart of Norfolk’s Art District!

Requirements for this solo show opportunity:

This specific solo show opportunity occurs during our Second National Exhibition of Collage and Assemblage in our Main Gallery: Merged II. 

This opportunity is open to functional, non-functional, 2D, 3D, fine art, and fine craft in all mediums. The Vault can fit between 12 - 15 pieces depending on the sizes.

The Vault: 

The Vault is located in the d’Art Center’s new location in the NEON District. This one hundred and thirty two square foot exhibition space is a historical bank vault, and gives artists an opportunity to exhibit their work in a unique space in the heart of Norfolk Arts District (The NEON District). All styles and aesthetics are considered. D’Art Center will market the show through their social media and patron base, as well as provide invitational postcards/fliers. Commission on sales is 60% Artist, and 40% d’Art Center for juried shows in The Vault.

Merged II: d'Art's Second National Exhibition of Collage and Assemblage

Description: : Merged is an exhibition of original unique 2D and 3D collage and assemblage artworks that includes mediums specifically but not limited to found objects, recycled materials, paper, fiber, wood, and metals. Collages and assemblages must be free standing, wall mount, or pedestal ready. Work may be no longer than 60” in its longest dimension, and weigh no more than 50 pounds. D’Art Center will have an in person public reception according to state COVID Guidelines, will do a FB Live of the reception awards, will upload the award video to YouTube, and will also list the exhibiting pieces for sale on the d’Art Center website. This is a juried exhibition, and it will be co-curated by gallery manager Amanda Bradley, and exhibition juror, Andy Harris.

Juror Biography: Andy Harris is a Norfolk-based artist and arts educator that graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a BFA.  His current studio is located just outside the Railroad District in Park Place, Norfolk, his classroom in the Virginia Beach City Public Schools district at the Edward E. Brickell Academy for Advanced Academics and Arts. Andy Harris is a collage artist and contemporary painter. His recent collaborations with Apple, Platoon, and 1983 Creative have produced a body of work that has been used for multiple single and full length album covers, as well as transformed into an augmented reality listening experience which is the first of its kind.  His work can currently be seen throughout Europe on billboards and flyposters as a broad visual campaign for artist Jevon and his latest release Fell In Love In Brasil. Andy is currently working with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation in an effort to bring education and awareness to local oyster conservation efforts in the Tidewater area. This partnership is the basis from which Harris has produced three large scale collage works currently on Exhibition at Virginia’s Museum of Contemporary Arts. The group exhibition is titled Nourish and runs through June 8th, 2021.
