DISQUIET Literary Prize

Submissions are now open  for the DISQUIET Prize for writing in any genre, by a writer who has not yet published more than one book. Results are expected in early March. Three winners will be published in Granta.com (fiction), NinthLetter.com (non-fiction) or The Common (poetry).

One grand prize winner will receive a full scholarship, accommodations, and travel stipend to attend the tenth annual DISQUIET International Literary Program in Lisbon taking place June 21 - July 3, 2020. Runners-up and other outstanding entrants may also be considered for financial aid.

Publication Opportunity for Emerging Artists

Apply to have your work considered in Volume 11 by Friend of the Artist. FOA is a quarterly book dedicated to elevating the work of emerging artists around the world. Our publication releases every quarter and includes the work of artists who work in a variety of mediums. Accepted artists will have a four-page spread of their work, information, and artist statement. Volume 11 will be guest juried by Anna Mikaela Ekstrand, Angeliki Kim Jonsson, and Adele Smejkal and will be available in our store and online retailers including Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

 

Application Details

Accepted artists will have three works published in Volume 11, will receive a complimentary digital copy of the publication, social media post of work, discounts on books for family and friends, and free digital access to future publications.

Eligible Artists

Artists of all academic disciples are welcome to apply. This includes painting, sculpture, photography, installation, and performance art. Works must be submitted in a printable format.

Juror bios:

Anna Mikaela Ekstrand

Anna Mikaela Ekstrand is a Swedish/Guyanese independent curator and publisher living in New York City. Although she curates across mediums, she is especially interested in exploring equitable ways to disseminate performance art. Anna Mikaela served as co-/curator for the performance art events 'Tales Of Tales' (106 Rivington, 2019), ’Grebnellaw: Sperming The Planet' (House of Yes and The Oculus, 2018), and 'Your Decolonizing Toolkit' (MAW, 2016). She has held curatorial positions at Metropolitan Museum of Art, Solomon R. Guggenheim, Bard Graduate Center, and Museum of Arts and Design. Deeply vested in research, she has worked on over a dozen in-museum and off-site art and design related exhibitions and their catalogs. Anna Mikaela is the founding editor-in-chief of Cultbytes, an online art publication that focuses on interdisciplinary and non-hierarchical art criticism. She holds dual MA degrees, in Design History, Material Culture, and Decorative Arts from Bard Graduate Center and in Art History from Stockholm University.

Angeliki Kim Jonsson & Adele Smejkal

We are two art enthusiasts and professionals with a diverse experience of working in the art world. Angeliki Kim Jonsson is the founder of DYNAMISK an Independent consultancy that offers Curating and Art Advisory. Alongside DYNAMISK she also hosts “In Conversation with..” which is an ever growing series of vibrant and unique conversations with pioneering individuals from the art world. Adele Smejkal works for Sotheby’s London and is also a freelance journalist and the founder of @as_artjournal, an Instagram based page about art. Through a shared passion for art and presence on social media, we have formed our friendship and partnership. Our story, vision and thinking alike inspired us to create the Art/choke.

Experimental Art Film Salon

Hi local New York filmmakers!

We are putting on an experimental art film salon showcase at X marks the loft at the end of October and we are looking for your weird films to screen. 

The event date is TBA but it will most likey be on Oct 18th. If accepted into the salon we ask you to do a 5 minute Q&A with our host and the audience. This is not a HUGE screening it should be 50+ people. It will be a unique night of Art, installation, film and music.

Trestle Gallery is pleased to announce a new open call opportunity for site-specific projects for The Wall. Trestle Gallery will select 4 artists (or artistic collaborators/collectives) for the 2020 calendar year to execute a site-specific drawing, painting, or installation on our 8 x 10.25 foot entrance wall at our 850 3rd Avenue location. These projects will remain on view for approximately 2 months, with an opening reception that coincides with our other gallery programming. Applications are open to all artists (NY-based or otherwise) but selected artists must be available to install and deinstall their own projects. Trestle will provide a modest stipend to help cover expenses related to the production of the work. Selected artists will be notified in the Fall of 2019.

Submission Guidelines:  

  • You may submit up to 5 images of your current work to provide some context for your proposal. If you have previously executed a site-specific wall work, please include it with your images.
  • Please make your proposal as detailed as possible. You may also submit up to 3 images to further illustrate/supplement your proposal.
  • Acceptable media include drawing, painting, sculpture, fiber art, ceramics, photography, and/or mixed media. Installations may extend up to 24 inches from the wall. Unfortunately we cannot accept proposals which include video, sound, or any other electronic components.
  • Images must be in .JPG or .JPEG format, 1000 pixels on longest side, titled: LastnameFirstname_Title.jpg
  • CV, Statement, and Bio must be submitted in PDF form, titled: LastnameFirstName_CV.pdf; LastnameFirstName_Statement.pdf; LastnameFirstName_Bio.pdf; 
  • National and international artists are welcome to apply, but selected artists must be available to install and deinstall their own projects

Denbo Fellowship

This Fellowship is designed to offer artists, from a range of artistic disciplines, an environment conducive to individual and collaborative creative practice, and provides a unique opportunity to complete a new body of work at Pyramid Atlantic Art Center.

 

Selected artists will receive:

Up to one month of access to the printshop, typeshop, paper studio and/or bindery 

Key to studios and 24-hour access

Ten hours of one-on-one technical assistance 

A stipend for travel, materials, housing, etc. ($250 two weeks, $350 three weeks, or $500 one month)

Storage space and flat file for tools and materials

Use of standard shop supplies

 

Eligibility:

Each applicant will be judged on the artistic merit of his/her work, interest and potential in printmaking, paper arts and book arts (or a combination thereof), as well as the quality and clarity of his/her plan for the residency. Although previous experience in a Pyramid Atlantic discipline may be helpful to a successful applicant, such experience is not necessary or expected. Artists are also asked to give an artist talk during their residency.

 

Residency Length: 

Minimum 2 weeks, maximum 1 month (specify the amount of time in the application)

 

Selection Process: 

A panel of professionals including artists, curators, and arts administrators will jury each round of applications.

Keyholder Residency

Pyramid Atlantic Art Center's Keyholder Residency is a competitive opportunity for emerging artists who want to have unlimited access to the studios in exchange for working 4 hours a week for Pyramid Atlantic. The residency is awarded to artists who hope to gain more knowledge and improve their skills in the printmaking, papermaking or book arts studios. Two artists are selected per season by the Pyramid Atlantic artistic staff. Keyholders work in a productive community atmosphere alongside other artists, and are expected to abide by all studio policies. Housing does not come with Keyholder Residency. 

Fall Residency Dates: September 3 –December 6, 2019
 
Selected Artists will receive: 

24-hour studio access (up to 30 hours a week) 

Flat file & storage space

Promotion in Pyramid Atlantic newsletter and social media

 
Keyholder residents are asked to:

Work 4 hours a week for Pyramid Atlantic (Perform daily operational tasks including but not limited to ordering supplies, receiving and unpacking orders, responding to organizational inquiries, and working at the reception desk) 

Care for studio equipment and tools

Bring consumable supplies (paper, ink, newsprint, etc.)

Present one artist talk or public demonstration

Share studio with other artists and Pyramid Atlantic programming
