In this interview, we sit down with MAREO (Mario Rodriguez), a multidisciplinary artist known for his captivating exploration of the natural world and its connection to the human spirit. With his background in architecture and design, Mareo’s work often reflects the intersection of physical landscapes and metaphysical journeys. As he prepares to debut his digital solo exhibition Portals at Load Gallery in Barcelona, we delve into the inspiration behind this series, his artistic process, and the multisensory experience that accompanies the exhibition. Mareo shares his thoughts on the symbolism of portals, the merging of traditional and digital media, and the evolving future of art.

- Can you share the inspiration behind the Portals series and how the idea for this exhibition took shape?

The Portals series draws from my deep admiration for the forces of nature and how they mirror the human spiritual journey. I’ve always been fascinated by the cracks, ruptures, and transitions we see in landscapes—mountains, canyons, and rivers—all of which feel symbolic of the transformations we undergo as individuals. This series is an exploration of those metaphysical shifts. The idea for this exhibition began with my desire to visualize these moments of transition not just as physical spaces but as spiritual passageways, drawing on the symbolism of the portal as both separation and connection.

- The title Portals suggests an entryway or transformation. What does the concept of a “portal” mean to you, both artistically and spiritually?

To me, a portal represents a threshold between one state and another—an entry point that takes you from the known into the unknown, from the physical into the metaphysical. Artistically, it symbolizes a rupture, a break in the continuity that allows for creation, evolution, or even dissolution. Spiritually, it reflects our inner journeys: the moments of introspection, challenge, and transcendence that shape who we are. In this series, the portal is both a literal and symbolic passage—an opening to new dimensions of experience.

- Is there a particular piece within the Portals series that holds special significance to you? Could you share its story or the process behind it?

One piece that holds special significance is "Portal 1 - White Frequencies." This was the first animation of my work, created in 2021, and it was displayed in Miami during an event opened by the spiritual leader Deepak Chopra. The piece is a powerful representation of the portal opening and closing, symbolizing birth and transcendence. It encapsulates the cycle of life within an endless portal of evolution, highlighting the continuous journey of transformation that defines existence. It was a pivotal moment for me, blending both spiritual and artistic elements. The animation was made by Ivan Cruz.

- Load Gallery has created a sensory experience with fog and natural scents to complement the digital works. How important is the multisensory aspect to understanding your art, and what do you hope it adds to the viewer's experience?

The multisensory dimension is crucial because it engages viewers beyond just the visual. By incorporating elements like fog and natural scents, I want to create an immersive experience that draws the audience into the world of the Portals. These additional layers enhance the sense of transition—like stepping into another realm where sight, smell, and touch converge. It’s a way of connecting more deeply with the themes of the series, making the experience of each piece not just something to be seen, but felt. I hope it creates a space where viewers can engage with the art on multiple levels, both sensorially and emotionally.

- As an artist who merges traditional forms with digital media, how do you see the future of art evolving in an increasingly digital world?

I believe the future of art lies in the fusion of tradition and technology. Digital tools open up possibilities that were previously unimaginable, allowing artists to manipulate reality in new ways while still staying grounded in tactile processes. This merging expands the boundaries of what art can be, making it more interactive, experiential, and accessible. However, I also think the human touch, the physical presence of art, will always be vital. The future of art, to me, is about balance—using digital advancements to enhance our ability to convey meaning, while maintaining the authenticity of traditional methods.
