JSP Art Gallery creates a Gateway to International Talent in the Heart of the Czech Art Scene: In Conversation with Sebastian Pastuszak Jr. and Gabriela Cotiga

Sebastian Pastuszak Jr. and Gabriela Cotiga
In today's interview, we are thrilled to sit down with Sebastian Pastuszak Jr. and Gabriela Cotiga, the dynamic duo behind JSP Art Gallery, located in the heart of Malá Strana, Prague. Combining their passion for art with entrepreneurial spirit, Sebastian and Gabriela have created a unique space that champions contemporary visual culture through diverse artistic expressions. We'll explore their journey from different backgrounds into the art world, the vision and mission of their gallery, memorable exhibitions, and what exciting plans lie ahead for the future of JSP Art Gallery.

- Can you tell us about the origin story of JSP Art Gallery? How did your background influence the decision to open a gallery in Prague?
Sebastian:
Opening my own gallery has been a dream of mine since childhood. Thanks to my father, I grew up surrounded by art. Throughout my childhood, we visited artists' studios and traveled to exhibitions around the world. In 2009, my father opened his first gallery, and I had the privilege of being involved in the creation of every new exhibition. In the summer of 2023, I was presented with the unique opportunity to open my own gallery in the heart of historic Prague. My girlfriend and I seized this chance without hesitation and made this dream a reality, under the mentoring of my father.
- What is the mission of JSP Art Gallery, and how do you see it contributing to contemporary visual culture?
Gabriela:
Our mission is to reveal various phenomena from the field of contemporary visual culture. Given the complex nature of contemporary art, we want the gallery's program to focus on the variability of contemporary visual practices in their most dynamic forms. The Gallery space is open to different artistic attitudes and forms of creative activity. We are dedicated to curating exhibitions that challenge conventions and stimulate intellectual and aesthetic engagement.
The aim of its concept is to provide art lovers, collectors, investors and the general public with contact with excellent art and artists, to create a place for meeting and dialogue, to offer experience in the field of collecting and investing in works of art and, last but not least, to provide a space for a meditative and aesthetic experience with artwork in public and private events.

- You collaborate with both Czech and international curators. How do these collaborations shape the exhibitions and overall program of the gallery?
Sebastian:
Our gallery is one of the few in the Czech Republic that primarily focuses on art from abroad. We represent artists from Italy, Romania, Austria, and other countries. Our aim is to introduce exceptional talent to the Czech audience, collectors, and art investors. To achieve this, we collaborate with prominent curators from around the world. In the future, we plan to organize joint exhibitions that bring together Czech and foreign artists, enriching the local art scene with fresh perspectives.
- Could you highlight a few memorable exhibitions from the gallery's past that have defined or shaped its identity?
Sebastian:
Every time we install a new exhibition, I catch myself saying, "This is my favorite one." It truly reflects our ongoing improvement and the fresh ideas we infuse into each show. Each exhibition holds special significance for me, as its concept is unique and thoughtfully crafted. While I could highlight a few, I truly value all of them for their distinct contributions in defining our identity.

- What exciting exhibitions or projects can we look forward to at JSP Art Gallery in the coming months? Are there any new artistic trends or mediums you plan to explore more deeply in future exhibitions?
Gabriela:
We’re excited to share that JSP Art Gallery has just opened a new exhibition by Michal Macků called (IL)LUSIO, running from October 16 to December 13, 2024. This is a special one for us, as it’s the first time we’re exhibiting work that combines glass with his unique gellage technique.
As for what’s next - our future program is looking really promising! I’ve seen the plans for the next exhibition, and trust me, it’s going to be incredible. But I don’t want to spoil anything - just stay tuned and follow us on Instagram so you don’t miss out!
