Overview

This program is for writers working in autobiography, fiction, and auto-fiction. With the support of guest faculty, participants will explore the distinctions and intersecting themes between genres, such as when to be beholden to the truth and when to break free from it, writing fiction vs. memoir (and how to decide which is which), and teasing satisfying narrative threads from real life. 

Through these themes and questions, guest faculty will help writers develop their own unique voice and approach to writing autobiography, memoir, and fiction.

What does the program offer?

Over two weeks, writers will have time and space to work on their individual manuscripts. Editors Halimah Marcus and Jess Zimmerman, from Electric Literature will be available for editorial consultations and will lead a group seminar on strategies for getting published. 

Guest faculty Meredith Talusan and Susan Choi will lead group and individual discussions around the program’s themes and approaches relevant to the process of writing narrative fiction, auto-fiction, memoir, autobiography, and other related subgenres. 

The program will feature a guest speaker event featuring award-winning Canadian writer Dionne Brand, as well as two reading nights featuring writers reading from their works in progress alongside guest faculty.

Who should apply? 

We welcome all writers (emerging and established) writing auto-fiction, autobiography, and memoir, from all backgrounds, and all gender identities and expressions.

Summer Writers Retreat 2019 Literary Arts

Overview

The Summer Writers Retreat is a self-directed program that offers time and space for writers to retreat, reconnect, and re-energize their writing practice. In addition to a single room, which doubles as your private studio, you will be surrounded by a community of artistic peers. You will have the opportunity to attend inspiring talks and performances and meet with guest faculty to consult on your work.

What does the program offer?

This self-directed residency offers the opportunity to work away from the constraints of everyday life. Delve deep into your creative project and take advantage of the artistic community of your peers around you. The program provides opportunities for consultations with guest mentors, and optional group sessions led by guest mentors that allow writers to explore literary tools, aspects, and devices that you may find useful in your practice. You may also sign up for additional walks and day trips within Banff National Park as well as campus-wide activities organized by our Participant Resources team.

This flexible program allows you to choose the amount of support you are looking for. All program elements are optional. Participants can request to extend their stay. Mentorship will not be offered during extended stays. These requests will be approved based on availability of accommodation (additional fees will apply).

Who should apply? 

Writers in all creative genres are invited to apply. The program is designed for emerging and established writers with a proven publication record seeking a period of dedicated time to work on a project in any genre. We welcome writers from all backgrounds, and all gender identities and expressions.

Call for Manuscripts, The A3 Press

The A3 Press has launched with its first five chapbooks, and is now seeking manuscripts for its next 4-6 titles. Photography, poetry, prose, illustration, and any combination of those. Please see below for all the details.

We publish intense work that has something to say about what it's like to be alive at this point in time. We want unsettling work. Honest and lyrical writing, direct and visceral artwork. All our publications are designed in A3 size format. Please visit our website here to get an idea of what we do.

Do you have a series of poems or short stories, or maybe a long story that can be spread out over several panels? Do you have a combination of drawings and short stories? Or poems and photographs? Or maybe 12 drawings or photographs without text that would fit into our A3 map-fold format?

The submission fee is $20 (approx £15) per submission. Multiple submissions are welcome, as are all genres. All writers and artists welcome.

The submission fee ensures that we can design and print our titles to the highest standards, and most importantly, it means we can pay our artists and writers. Each title will receive £200 (approx. $255) along with 10 copies of their title.

Athena Project

Athena Project, located in Denver, Colorado, is proud to announce the call for submissions for its Plays In Progress Series (PIPS). This Series is an opportunity for new plays to be developed in one of three models: concert or table readings and our workshops. Rehearsals and presentation will take place in Denver at a location to be determined over the course of approximately March-April 2020. Three to six new plays will be selected based on a blind submission process and given a dramaturg, director, cast and basic design elements during presentations. Scripts are accepted from March 1 – April 15, 2019.

Submission Guidelines are as follows:

1. Playwright must be a woman and may submit only ONE full-length script. Full-length is defined by at least 60 pages in standard playscript format.

2. Previously un-produced plays only. Scripts with prior workshops, readings or academic productions are accepted, but the script should be revised for the playwright to get the most from this opportunity.

3. Submission must include:

a. BLIND script in PDF format – PAGE ONE of PDF script MUST have TITLE, CHARACTER BREAKDOWN & SYNOPSIS of script, 200 word limit (This file will contain NO playwright contact info*)

b. Cover letter addressing: 1) what the playwright would like to accomplish working with a director, dramaturg and cast and 2) how she heard about the call for submissions

c. Resume 

4. Plays submitted without all supporting materials included will be disqualified.

5. We recommend the playwright be able to travel to the area for rehearsals as needed, and for at least one performance at her own expense. We will select 3-6 playwrights to participate in the PIP Series and hope to strike a balance between local and national work. Exact rehearsal and performance schedules will be worked out with the director, dramaturg, and playwright after all plays are selected. Travel stipends are offered.

*Contact information must be listed ONLY on resume and cover letter, not on the script, the first page of which will be its title, a character breakdown and a short synopsis (submissions will be read blind).

Timeline:

Deadline to submit all materials is midnight, April 15, 2019**
Three – six finalists will be selected by September 2019
Directors and Dramaturgs will be selected by October 2019
Casting will be between November-December 2019
Rehearsals will begin in February 2020
Plays In Progress Series will open approximately March or April 2020

2019 Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor

A prize of $10,000 is given annually by the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University to support documentary artists, working alone or in teams, who are involved in extended, on-going fieldwork projects that rely on and exploit the interplay of words and images. The winner's work will also be published in the Center for Documentary Studies' digital publications and placed in the Archive of Documentary Arts at the Rubenstein Library at Duke University. Competitive applicants to this prize have a point of view derived from an in-depth understanding of place, history, and the current situation, in concert with a personal relationship to the proposed work. Ultimately, their commitment is to use documentary expression to motivate the thinking and reflection of others. A panel of writers, editors, and documentary artists will judge. Using the online submission system, submit up to 19 images, 15 pages of double-spaced writing, and/or 10 minutes of time-based media. Applicants must also submit a one-page project description, and a curriculum vitae with a $70 entry fee by May 15. Visit the website for complete guidelines.

Animating Our Stories | Indigenous Writing and Digital Illustration

Overview

This program will ignite Indigenous authors and artists focusing on young readers to delve into new ways of storytelling using digital illustration techniques. Through guidance from experienced faculty including recognized Indigenous authors, an illustrator, and a digital animator, participants will learn to lift a story off the page, texturize it, and animate elements of it to life.

Animating Our Stories is a space where storytellers, content producers, and digital media artists will collaborate to fuse modern presentation techniques with the art of storytelling. Participants will explore technology as they learn to illuminate the audience experience of their already vividly imagined stories.

What does the program offer?

Animating our Stories uses storytelling as a form of artistic expression through new technology. The program will develop participants’ ability to learn and expand their storytelling techniques for young audiences. Participants will focus on creating immersive and educational worlds – a key element in storytelling for youth.

The program will offer opportunities to work with editor faculty, and with an illustrator to highlight parts of participants’ stories to focus on for animation. Participants will work with digital media to determine what elements of their stories could be enhanced by animation. 

Who should apply?

Enrolment to this program is for individuals of Indigenous descent (status, non-status, Inuit, and Metis) only. This program is an ideal fit for emerging to established Indigenous writers and illustrators of narrative fiction and/or poetry for young readers. Applicants should be writers in any young reader genre with a strong interest in digital storytelling techniques, although previous experience with digital media is not necessary.

Successful applicants should plan to arrive at the program with a completed work or work in progress to be brought to life through technology.
