Announces the Debut of an AI Experiment in Art Curation:

"This Show is Curated by a Machine"

The free call for international submissions is now open for all to take part in an experiment that defines how we move forward with AI curation in an ethical way

The Museum of Wild and Newfangled Art (mowna) is currently designing an artificial intelligence curator for their final show of the year "This Show is Curated by a Machine" which directly answers the Whitney Museum of American Art's curatorial question, "The Next Biennial Should Be Curated by a Machine."

The curator, an AI bot machine, will learn to curate by looking at the data set from the 2021 mowna Biennial, an exhibit of an international pool of artists selected from 44 countries gathered through a free call for submissions process that ran from January through March of 2021. The Biennial includes all forms of art made from 2019 to 2021. The machine will also learn from other data sets of recently made art.

The AI machine will curate the show by looking at the text data of the submissions as well as the artwork files. There will also be human curators, so that a comparison can be made.

The show will be viewable at mowna.org, and a detailed writeup of the process, results, and thoughts about the future of artificial intelligence related to art curation will be made available. Early questions are available here in the mowna blog: https://www.mowna.org/blog/070121-this-show-is-curated-by-a-machine

"We are interested in creating a machine that can curate in a diverse and ethical way, that is not founded in white supremacy or structures of inherent racism. Much of the art world is affected and effected by both of these issues. So mowna asks, is it possible to create an AI that looks at the art and curates with diversity, equity and inclusion? It is important to build this machine now, before other big tech companies design algorithms that erase the artist and define AI curation." ~cari ann shim sham*, Co-founder and Curator of mowna.

"This Show is Curated by a Machine" marks the third online art experience by mowna, the first being its Opening Show now available to members in the mowna collection, and the second being the current exhibit, the 2021 mowna Biennial. The Biennial is mowna’s direct response to the gap in the art world seen after the coronavirus pandemic, and showcased art of all mediums that otherwise would’ve gone unseen. Tickets to the Biennial will be available until the show closes on September 22nd, and are sliding scale pay what you wish, after which "This Show is Curated by a Machine" will be installed and available for online viewing.

Artists may submit up to 10 works of art per submission and artists will be paid 70% of ticket and membership sales from the show, with the other 30% paying for the creation of the platform. There is no submission fee to apply, and all mediums of art are welcome by all people from all countries. The works must have been completed after January 1, 2020. The deadline for submissions is August 20, 2021 at 12 PM ET.

As the global community continually moves further into a multi-faceted technological way of life, the way art, across all mediums, is consumed, has been changing in ways to make art more accessible while remaining true to the integrity of all genres. mowna recognized this growing, transformational need pre-pandemic which catalyzed the formation and birth of the Museum of Wild and Newfangled Art  to meet the ever-growing needs of an ever-changing art world.

mowna is at the center of the exponentially changing art world and makes it their priority to showcase art from all walks of life. With a mix of what is familiar and unfamiliar, patrons will see artists who've been curated by the Whitney or the MoMA along with artists available only on mowna.

"This Show is Curated by a Machine" will run from September 23, 2021 through January 31, 2022 at mowna.org.

mowna exists to provide an international online platform for the most timely, diverse, and preeminent artists.

OPEN CALL - RAKE COMMUNITY 2021: PRACTITIONERS-IN-RESIDENCE

Share

City:

Eligibility:

Calling artists, researchers, writers, data analysts, journalists, activists, academics, scientists, community groups, curators, photographers, poets and everyone else to submit to RAKE Community 2021: Practitioners-in-Residence!

RAKE Community is an autonomous platform for practitioners to develop research-based visual enquiries. It aims to build a framework for socially and politically driven projects while promoting accessible exchange outside of traditional routes or institutions.

After an intensive two-month collaboration initiative in 2020 followed by a year of fascinating takeovers on the community Instagram page, we are pleased to launch the second iteration of the programme which will take the form of a series of digital residencies on the platform throughout the rest of 2021.

The selected practitioners will be designated one month to carry out their own solo research on Instagram, where each will be expected to present a series of posts showcasing the development of their research - no formal outcomes are required. Practitioners will be encouraged to communicate, critique and collaborate with one another throughout the entire period, with the support of RAKE members.

Applicants are asked to consider the theme (IN)VISIBILITY - which seeks to capture the duality between the visible and the obscured, wherever it may occur. Encompassing secrecy, in-between spaces, that which is ’hidden in plain sight’, and the visualisation of the unseen.

We are particularly interested in proposals that are of an investigative nature; that are politically-, socially- or data-driven; or that critically utilise new online tools or open-source inquiry techniques and technologies.

The programme will include regular feedback sessions and communication with RAKE members and fellow selected participants. Practitioners-in-residence will also be invited to join the RAKE Community online workspace for ongoing feedback and support from a growing network of artists, writers and researchers, and will have the opportunity to contribute a piece for RAKE Post during their residencies.

Practitioners/ collectives of all disciplines and at any stage in their careers who want to experiment with new processes of interdisciplinary research and visual expression are invited to apply. Proposals are encouraged from all over the world. We especially welcome submissions from underrepresented voices. Unfortunately, as RAKE Community has no external funding, it's not possible for us to offer funding for practitioners-in-residence (or ourselves as facilitators) during this year’s program.

What is necessary to know about permissions, promotion, funding and more…to make a successful event.

27.09 – 18.10.2021

Deadline: 15 September 2021

The Venice Biennale is a large-scale international contemporary art exhibition. In early May, thousands of art-world denizens descend in the city for the opening of a new edition of the Biennale, the closely watched pageant of contemporary art that has been running—with a few interruptions—since 1895. The Biennale is arguably the most prestigious exhibition in the world, filled with history and also cloaked in myth.

The preview days brings 25,000 artists, collectors, curators, museum directors and journalists into the city, followed by 600,000 visitors in the six months after. For this reason it is extremely important to know how everything works.

Session 1.

What is the Venice Biennale and why everybody wants to be present. Identification of the keys points that all participants need to know before facing such import event.

Session 2.

First step the location. How to find the ideal location. Even though the city is small, for the Venice Biennale you need to be in a good quarter. How to find the right location. Prices. The place makes the difference.

Session 3.

Step 2. What do you need to know about your location. The exhibition space is in the Arsenale? Inside of the Biennale? Then is very important to know which are the rules to respect, the permissions you need and the best suppliers you can get.

Session 4.

Organizing your event in a place located in the city: the things changes and there are other permissions you need to provide, rules to respect, and of course the suppliers.

Session 5.

How to promote an event during the Biennale: this is the most intensive period and a part for the main exhibition organized by the Biennale, you have at least 300 more competitors. In the city during the Venice Biennale there almost 500 of shows, events and projects. Timing and strategies is a key point in order to have a successful event.

Session 6.

Collateral events can be a good strategy to keep and attract the attention on your initiative. When is a collateral program useful for the promotion of your show and how should it work: dinners, parties, conference, workshop and presentation.

Session 7.

Your event needs more money! How do you identify possible sponsors. Which is the best strategy to approach a potential client for your initiative.

Session 8.

What can you do for your supporters. The Venice Biennale is an exclusive way to say thank you.

Session 9.

Venice is a tough city! No cars, therefore transports are only on boats. All about logistic: transports and suppliers. Taxi and restaurants. Hotels and flats. When you should start booking and arranging all these fundamental matters.

Session 10.

What you should not do at the Venice Biennale. Some key scenarios which should absolutely avoided.
