OPEN CALL FOR ARTWORK: STIFF 2021

Eligibility:

We are inviting visual and new media artists to submit their artwork for the exhibition program of the 8th Student International Film Festival.

For the last seven years, STIFF Festival has produced a rich accompanying program that elaborates and complements the thematic focus of its film program. With the emphasis on contemporary art practices, STIFF’s exhibition program gathers artists from all over the globe, dealing with relevant social, political, as well as intimate aspects of everyday life.

This year the festival is giving attention to the Body, and the exhibition program aims to explore socially relevant ways of interpreting the body in a contemporary environment saturated with images.

What is the relationship between a body and the moving image? Are we our bodies or is the body just merchandise we trade on the labor market and offer in intimate relationships? How to position ourselves in a world where objects move more freely than people?

When is our body an instrument of knowledge, interaction, and intimacy with the world, and when is it a space of discomfort and restriction? Do we allow our bodies to be playful?

We encourage a view of the body as productive and creative, the body as a process that changes its meaning and capacities depending on the context in which it resides.

As an accompanying festival program, the multimedia exhibition will aim to create a special sensory experience that will explore and enrich the subject of the body, challenging our ideas of corporeality and questioning the limits and the capacities of bodies through their constant and fluid interactions with the environment.

We are inviting artists to submit photographs, GIF animations, video art, or any other form of digital artwork (video games, websites, applications, etc.) that deal with the subject of the body in the broadest sense. We welcome various perspectives, from conceptual to intimate approaches.

The deadline for application is May 1st, 2021.

ALLEGORICAL IMPULSE
OPEN CALL

Whether it be consciously or subconsciously, we are creatures that archive. A sentiment towards the remoteness of the past, and a desire to redeem it for the present -- these two are the most fundamental impulses to Allegory.
Allegory is a cognitive action where individuals apply a metaphorical method to understanding situations that normally don’t contain a symbolic language.

It is not a special way of interpretation, but a fundamental human impulse to draw diverse associations among concrete and more abstract experience. Caught in between the then and the now, we attempt to bridge these gaps to what has been lost.

“...to tame the trash by turning it into documents of culture and history … reduce the heterogeneity of the trash, its utter difference, so that a coherent story, and hence history, can emerge”
- Sven Spieker, The Big Archive

For 5 weeks (13 March 2021 to 16 April 2021) we will delve into the concept of archiving, and how it not only manifests as a simple act of remembering - but as an integral part of being. We will explore how it imbues all aspects of life.

And at the end, you will have a chance to be featured in an online exhibition that will be held during the summer (dates TBC).

Deadline: 6 March 2021

Improbable Talks

Share

City:

Eligibility:

During 2020 we actively engaged in exchanges with fellow creatives in order to connect and share our ideas and experiences. For 2021 we are ready to create and develop strategies for open collaboration where connecting, linking, exchanging and manifesting will be the core of a participative project.

As seen in the survey's results, the main motivators for our participants were a personal sense of satisfaction, as well as the possibility of exchange; we want to develop this further and thought of starting with the most basic, kind of still stereotyped yet meaningful exchanging method, which is that of talking. We want to invite you to participate in what we've named "Improbable Talks" because they are somehow random, with unknown yet likely enough, really interesting matches from a variety of origins, occupations and views on life.

The dynamics of the talks are as simple as they may: there will be a main topic that can be freely developed by both participants. Co-Founders Abdulnur Akyüz and Mónica Quijano will just be moderators and in charge of the good functioning of the talk, as well as translations.

The topic will deal with our core focuses on IDENTITY (AS BUILT WITH OTHERS), CREATION AND RESISTANCE. And it can be developed from the perspectives each participant thought was the leading one to answer to "Migrations" survey; anyhow there are no limitations, we want these to be open and reflective.

Check our I.D portfolio*, so you can take an in-depth look to this upcoming project that will be focused on the narratives, content development and circulation of stage 3 from April 2021 on.
