Collide residency award

Collide is an annual competition that invites artists over 18 years old and of any nationality to apply with a proposal for a research-led residency in both locations: at CERN, Geneva, and at various laboratories and research centres in Barcelona, while based at the Hangar Centre for Art Research and Production.

Collide invites entries from artists who are interested in interacting with the extraordinary CERN scientific community. The programme is targeted at artists with a distinct interest in a transdisciplinary approach, a strong motivation for scientific thinking and an interest in fundamental science. The focuses of the residencies is to invite artists into the Laboratory to think, discuss, be informed and inspired, and comprehend the challenges of fundamental research and the big questions that inform physics today. Through this process, the artists develop high-quality innovative engagements with CERN’s research and community. Direct interactions with scientists are fundamental to this process.

Prizes Details:

Artists interested in applying to Collide are invited to submit a project proposal that combines research and production. The scope of this proposal will include a research period at CERN and a second developmental phase in Barcelona, where the artists will have the opportunity to expand their research and test its applications through Barcelona’s scientific and cultural network, as well as to engage with a wide range of communities.

The Collide Call for Entries encourages the participation of artists interested in the ideas described above, who comply with any of the following criteria:

Artists interested in the cultural significance of fundamental research and scientific knowledge.

Artists interested in the processes of fundamental science and particle physics who are able to extrapolate this understanding into art projects of artistic excellence.

Artists pushing the traditional forms of collaboration between the artistic and scientific fields and asking innovative and provocative questions in this respect.

Motion Design/Animation/Augmented Reality Open Call - City of Vienna, A1 Telekom Austria, Azoomee London

Brief introduction:

*PAID OPPORTUNITY*. The educational media company, Azoomee, is partnering with Stadt Wien (city of Vienna) and the leading mobile network operator in Austria, A1, to promote the new installation of 5G. With the help of local artists, Azoomee's aim is to create an inspiring and exciting augmented reality experience app for children (age 5-10) as they are guided by a tour guide through Vienna's Town Hall. Its rooms will hold secret worlds to find and explore through provided mobile phone screens and each room will showcase the designs of one local artist or collective. The app will take the children on a journey of imagination to accompany the tour, with an emphasis on engaging story-telling and imaginative 2D and 3D animated injections to the grand rooms of the building.

London based educational media distributor Azoomee has partnered with the city of Vienna and the Austrian Telecom provider A1 to promote the new installation of 5G in the city. The aim of the project is to provide an augmented reality application for children on provided mobile phones which will be used as an extension to an already existing tour of the Town Hall, given by tour guides. The children will be handed a mobile phone at the beginning of the tour. The tour guide will introduce each room with fun facts and stories, after which the children will be given the opportunity to use the phones to search the room for any ‘hidden’ augmented reality features.

The animations should either enhance existing features of the room to accompany the story given by the tour guide, or tell their own imaginative stories. The artist(s) should bring flair and excitement into the building's rooms with their animations. Creatures, hidden rooms, trap doors, fantastical environments and landscapes are all very welcome.

Each selected artist(s) will be given a budget of around €1500 - €2000 to work with, and will have a 4-week timeframe within which to produce this experience. Their work will be showcased for a period of 6 months from September 14th, and will be the first use of augmented reality at the cross section between public art and educational entertainment worldwide featuring area target technology.

3D animations can be done via all programs with the possibility of export to Unity, e.g. Maya, Blender, C4D, Max, etc

2D animations ideally made in Spine.

Prizes Details:

Selected artists will be paid from 1500 Euros for their work.

4 subnetAIR CALLS in September 2020 at Schmiede Hallein

This year we, subnet and Schmiede, can offer four subnetAIR units (€ 1,500 each) in the period from September 1 to October 5, 2020 in Hallein. SchmiedeParticipation is a prerequisite.

The year 2020 is not what it seemed, we are adapting. Promised subnetAIRs 2020 had to be postponed to 2021. The current situation makes travel unpredictable and prevents the usual close collaboration with the researchers at the Center for HCI. That is why subnet 2020 will break new ground. We are cooperating with Schmiede Hallein and will work in the Saline on Pernerinsel in Hallein, instead of in Salzburg. The Center for HCI is at our side as far as possible with advice, action and technology. The Saline will be available as a work studio from September 1st to October 5th. The exact room layout will take place in consultation and taking into account the developing realities of Schmiede.

Schmiede20: Pferde / Horses takes place from September 16 to 25. SchmiedeApplication is a prerequisite. The application is already online. Reference to subnetAIR submission in the SchmiedeApplication makes sense.

Key data:
# 4 x € 1,500 for at least 3 weeks in Hallein
# Possible period: September 1st to October 5th
# Work room in the saline
# Schmiede20: Pferde / Horses September 16-25
# The center for HCI is optionally available with know-how for projects with a focus on physical computing, hardware hacking and tinkering.
# Travel, accommodation and meals are to be carried autonomously.

# The application should not be longer than three pages and should consist of a concept, curriculum vitae and references.
# An independent jury selects and awards.
# The residency begins with a public meeting (meet the artist, online) and ends with a presentation and documentation of the results.
# The subnetAIR fee is paid 50% at the beginning and 50% after documentation.

Expectation:  Process documentation & work that can be exhibited

The subnetAIR program actively promotes artists and makes them public. subnetAIR counteracts the bottleneck in production and presentation rooms and lowers barriers in favor of realizing sound project ideas by providing infrastructure and know-how in our field of activity.

Place: Saline Pernerinsel // Smithy Hallein // Smithy in 5:20

Application deadline: June 20, 2020
