ATTEMPT 4 - International Contest for Experiment in Visual Arts

Eligibility:

Jan Tarasin Art Gallery in Kalisz, Poland invites you to participate in the Attempt 4 - International Contest for Experiment in Visual Arts.

Attempt 4 is a competition for artists, graduates of artistic universities.

Thanks to the open formula - we invite you to send works related to the need to experiment, and thus take risks, interventions or uncontrolled actions in the field of artistic practices, regardless of formal workshop.

The aim of the contest is best formulated by the following words of Jan Tarasin: "Art constantly repeats attempts" and "good artwork always stimulates."The art world is a dangerous expedition of imagination towards the immeasurable, unstable and pulsating world of which we are part. Taming the imagination with the unbalanced, changing rhythm of dramatic conflicts and monotonous repetitions is done through openness to the relativism of perceiving space, time, boundaries, scale and significance of micro-history. This also allows for attempts to convert the language of the conventional symbols into a suggestive expression of the autonomous forms and signs, to replace the static descriptions (...) with the experience of a dynamic spectacle. Relativism and risk - provoking the imagination - demand new, precise decisions, solutions and arrangements, require constant confrontation, constant intellectual effort, do not allow for a state of complacency or failure to pay attention…

The above excerpts from Jan Tarasin's essays continue to be timely. In the field of visual arts, new media, science and philosophy cause the system of challenges to become dynamic but not abandon the most important questions as well as creative, experimental creation.

We are curious to what dangerous expeditions of imagination artists will take us when they make further... “attempts.” We invite you to participate in Attempt 4 contest.

| Theme:

Abstractions are all around us. Ideas can be abstract; existing as an idea, feeling or quality but not having a tangible existence. Some conversations can be abstract, vague and theoretical and not based on particular examples or facts. And of course, there is abstract art which evokes feelings without trying to realistically represent the appearance of people or things. Abstract art, like poetry, offers a fragment of a mysteriously familiar narrative without directly revealing it in a realistic way. Reveal your most ABSTRACT thoughts.

| Eligible Submissions:

Entries may include 2- and 3-dimensional media, such as paintings, drawings, photography, mixed media, installations, ceramics, jewelry, fabric, sculpture, photos of performance art, fiction, poetry, short stories and other written explorations (up to 900 words). Submissions must be the original work of the applicant(s). Apply using the online form.

| Highlights:

Publication in a brilliant art magazine and online 2-year exhibition. Four top applicants will receive a feature section with a profile written about them. Up to 40 applicants will be selected for the full exhibition, all to be showcased in the magazine and the juried online exhibition.

Sound Occupations: Open Call for Artworks

Artistic field:

Theme:

Country:

City:

Eligibility:

Sound Occupations are part of Student International film festival’s (STIFF) supporting program (26. – 29.11.2020.) developed under the Rijeka Capital of Culture 2020. We invite artists to send us their work that explores, records, changes, interprets, produces or in any other way interacts with the sounds of everyday life; in any preferred artistic medium.

Exhibition Sound Occupations is dedicated to sound as a primary generator of everyday and artistic impulses.

Sound could be understood as an epistemological formative instrument that enables us to analyse urban and imagined spaces but also as an aesthetic tool to help us build and rebuild these landscapes in practice.

Soundscape determines life’s rhythm, it influences people’s emotions, their motion and thoughts. It occupies, manipulates, alternates, provokes and defines our realities. Examining the sounds of a city or a certain space and community, we can find out a lot about social, political and economic forces at work in those spaces: who and what produces the sounds? Who controls it? Which sounds are dominant and which ones are missing? In what way does the sound connect or separate individuals, groups and images? What happens when a certain sound disappears?

We are searching for works that will explore, enrich and play with the subject of SOUND. Through innovative audio-visual content, objects, installations, live actions and performances, experimental videos, visual poetry  etc. we invite artists to alter the role of sound and make it dominant in relation to the image. The submitted proposals therefore may refer to different areas of artistic expression with the central focus on examining urban soundscapes, exploring ambient and the changes that happen in the sounds of everyday life.

The aim of the Sound Occupations exhibition is to depart from a still existing dichotomy that separates art and reality, and to create works that contribute to a broader, fuller understanding of art and today’s society.

Selected works will be exhibited during the STIFF Film Festival (26. – 29. 11. 2020.) as part of the Sound Occupations exhibition in SKC Gallery in Rijeka.
