Exgirlfriend is now accepting proposals for our 2020/2021  exhibition cycle.

Submissions will be accepted from October 2nd, 2019 until December 10th, 2019. No late proposals will be accepted. All proposals should be submitted digitally in PDF format. Only PDF submissions will be accepted. PLEASE email us first for the complete rules and guidelines for a submission before sending any application materials.

Exgirlfriend is a contemporary gallery and artist studio space located in the Alt-Mariendorf neighborhood of Berlin. Founded and curated by Elena Feijoo, we are devoted to exhibiting artists from all backgrounds, generations, dispositions and disciplines. Exgirlfriend focuses on conceptually rigorous work that is not limited to traditional modes of making. We intend to create a reputation for blurring the line between project space and commercial gallery. For our 2020/2021 season, we will host 5 exhibitions, each determined from our open call. We believe the format of the open call is a great equalizer which benefits our space as much as it gives new opportunities to a much larger scope of artists. Our goal is to support artists by presenting high quality and daring exhibitions and through marketing, promoting, and selling their work. For more information on our exhibiting artists and our previous programmes, please see exgirlfriendberlin.com

The space contains one large 150 sqm exhibition space & a renovated kitchen/bar all within our sister non-profit company, HER. HER is a 1,000 square meter hall hosting artist studios and artist co-production spaces. We also host a series of artist presentations, visits, talks, and curated events which can coincide with our main exhibitions.

 Exhibitions

Exhibitions run for 3 weeks unless otherwise specified and agreed. The reviewing process will start in December at the end of the open call and the announcements on exhibition decisions will be made in January. Our first exhibition will begin in August 2020. Everyone will receive a decision by the end of January.

If your proposal is in the final round of considerations, you will receive an email from our staff asking to organize a meeting either in person or via Skype. If selected, we will contact you to welcome you to the 2020/2021 year with a package of information and details regarding your potential exhibition and to determine a time slot.

Once Exgirlfriend accepts a proposal, we put much of the decision making into the hands of the artists, giving artists and curators the freedom to actualize their ideas in a physical space. Our managing director will work one on one with each group or artist to execute the exhibition in the best way possible. Although we are a commercial gallery (we do suggest applicants take that into account) we have always exhibited typically non-commercial presentations such as installations and site specific works.

Proposals

Proposals should clearly articulate and present (1) an exhibition idea which strongly considers the gallery’s aesthetic focus and physical space and (2) the current work of the artist/s. It should not focus on artist’s past work or experience, although a CV is required.

Specificity and clarity are key (!)

All artists involved must provide a website with up to date examples of their current work.

Proposals will be judged on quality/feasibility of exhibition proposal and quality of artist’s recent work.

Please specify in headline of email along with desired time of year(Spring, Summer, Fall, or Winter 2019 etc) whether you are applying for a:

- Solo exhibit

- Two person exhibit

- Curatorial project

- other

If an artist would like to submit their portfolio or a certain body of work for consideration to be curated into a show arranged by the Exgirlfriend curatorial board, this is also accepted. Proposal focus should then be on specific project or body of work.

Format of Proposals

Exgirlfriend accepts all types of proposals, there are no guidelines or restrictions on length, image size, quantity etc. the ONLY requirement is that they are submitted as one PDF file with the following elements included:

1)Title page/introduction/overview

2)Proposal (or images of work)

3)Artist CV(for each artist) including website

3)Fee Receipt

Specific images of the proposed work, even in progress, are encouraged.

If proposal is a video format, a link can be accepted.

Other

A 30 euro proposal fee is required to complete an application submission. This helps provide small grants to the artists for production as well as help cover other costs that directly affect our ability to create an experimental space and not just a commercially focused gallery. Please include a receipt of transfer in your PDF packet.

The fee must be received before December 10th for all applications or application will not be considered

Postcards from the Edge 2020 - Call for Submissions

Postmark Deadline for Artwork: Monday, November 25, 2019

Since 1998, Visual AIDS has produced the annual Postcards From The Edge exhibition and benefit sale of original, postcard-sized works on paper by established and emerging artists. Known within the art world as the most exciting and affordable way to add to a collection, Postcards From the Edge offers a unique opportunity for buyers to acquire original, postcard-sized artwork for ONLY $85 EACH. Offered on a first-come, first-served basis, each piece is exhibited anonymously, and the identity of the artist is revealed only after the work is purchased. With the playing field leveled, all participants can take home a piece by a famous artist, or one who's just making their debut in the art world. Nonetheless, collectors walk away with something beautiful, a piece of art they love!

By participating in Postcards From the Edge artists and collectors support the activities of Visual AIDS, enabling the organization to produce AIDS-focused contemporary art programs and provide supplies and assistance to artists living with HIV/AIDS, many who are unable to continue producing work without such support. All Postcards From the Edge proceeds support the programs of Visual AIDS.

2020 will mark the 22nd year of Visual AIDS' benefit art sale and we hope that you will participate.

The 2020 event will be held January 3-5 at BORTOLAMI, 39 WALKER STREET, TRIBECA, NEW YORK CITY

PFTE is one of our most important fundraisers of the year, and its success will allow us to produce important art activism projects in 2020. By participating, artists support our mission, enabling us to produce AIDS-focused contemporary art programs and provide supplies and assistance to artists living with HIV/AIDS, many of whom are unable to continue producing work without such support.

THANK YOU - The support of artists makes this event a success each year. We couldn't do it without you!

Art Science Exhibits Berlin

Gears up to travel Ocean deep 2020 - Deadline Nov. 7th, 2019

Having just caught our breath from exhibiting our Art/NaturSci Pavilion at Palazzo Albrizzi-Capello, an official of the 2019 Venice Biennale, we begin with new call outs for 2020:

The Ocean deep exhibition program is in development to travel to Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Trieste, Italy and Swiss locations, with the possibility of landing us, once again, at the Venice Biennale in 2021.

The world's oceans are 80 - 90% empty of life formerly observed. Overfishing and pollution from pesticides used in unsustainable farming practices, and other nonsensical ventures valuing production over function, brought us here. Alongside captivating artworks, we plan to present real life solutions on how to begin to manage this devastation of the deep.

Participating artists will be provided with letters of invitation. Our letters have helped many international artists find sponsorship from universities, communities, galleries, and/or countries. Participants in our former exhibitions traveled with us to the 2019 Venice Biennale. Many of these artists found support via our recommendations, to come to Berlin and to Venice with their work, and many continue professional relationships with us worldwide.
