Drawing in Black/White/Grey

Country:

Eligibility:

"Colour is descriptive. Black and white is interpretive.” Eliott Erwitt
When images are limited to black, white and shades of grey, viewers are drawn to focus on the subject matter, and the details of how the artist interprets an image in the absence of color. The simplicity of a restricted palette works across many media. Quite often, the fundamentals of drawing and painting are introduced with the most basic colors of black, white, and grey. With an eagerness to learn color theory, appreciation can be lost for the depth and versatility of this limited color palette...McCord Gallery & Cultural Center is looking for artists to submit their BLACK/WHITE/GREY works of art.

For this exhibition, we are seeking BLACK/WHITE/GREY works of art created with graphite, charcoal, silver point, pencil, dry brush technique, pen & ink, scratchboard and ballpoint pen ONLY. No color should be part of the image. All subject matter is included. Artwork executed in any other medium other than those noted will not be accepted. Artists may submit up to 3 works for consideration for both the in-gallery exhibit and full virtual gallery of works on our website. All submissions will be considered. All styles and aesthetics are accepted, from traditional to contemporary. McCord Gallery selections are based on creativity, quality of artistry and originality as represented in the images submitted. The McCord Gallery & Cultural Center is a non-profit art gallery open to everyone; as such, the content of submissions should be appropriate for all viewers.

The Northville Art House is seeking original works of art in all two and three-dimensional media to be juried by sculptor, exhibiting artist, and art history and studio instructor Sergio de Guisti. In its 14th year, West of Center is about pushing beyond what is comfortable to create the unexpected. The center is safe and a repetition of the same formula over and over. This exhibition encourages artists to think outside the box and push past boundaries of everyday creativity and personal comfort; use tools, processes, and skills in unconventional ways; take risks with style by experimenting with color, media, details (less/more), and technique (loose/tight; consider scale (painting larger), materials (upcycled objects), ideas (go farther), and subject matter (contemporary); release expectations, be playful, and have fun.

Southwest Contemporary — Vol. 6 — Rooted: Poetics of Place

Share

Country:

Eligibility:

Southwest Contemporary invites artists throughout the Southwest to submit work to be included in Southwest Contemporary’s Fall-Winter 2022 issue, which will explore the theme “Rooted: Poetics of Place.”

Guest juror: Louise Martorano, executive director of RedLine Contemporary Art Center, Denver.

Published: September 2022.

Submission Fee: $15.

Deadline: June 6, 2022, 11:59 pm MT.

About Vol. 6: Rooted: Poetics of Place.

The Southwest occupies both mythic space and lived experience. Our sense of this place resides somewhere in between, created in the intersections of identity, perspective, and land. This issue of Southwest Contemporary takes a sustained look at place: evoking, elucidating, and complicating this region.

In many ways, the Southwest has been codified, commercialized, and consumed as a distinct place. Replicated, simulated, and imitated, the Southwest as an idea has become a simulacrum of itself. But the resistance to that mythology reveals the real—the meat of the place.

Lucy Lippard wrote that place is “the geographical component of the psychological need to belong somewhere, one antidote to a prevailing alienation.” From the high plains to the deep desert, borderlands, and cities, through mountains, canyons, and arroyos, this land roots deep in the psyche.

Emerging from the isolation, political fracture, and digital placelessness of the pandemic, now is the time to rediscover the hyperlocal—the people and places that are right around us. How does one belong in place? How does place inscribe itself in one’s consciousness? How are identities, histories, and geographies bound to place? Artists are encouraged to think broadly about these ideas.

Eligibility

Artists and collectives residing and working in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Northern Mexico, Texas, and Utah.

We invite all artists (18+) in the Southwest to apply whose work in any medium responds to/engages with/is rooted in concepts of place.
