The Studios offers a residency program for emerging and established artists and writers designed to encourage creative, intellectual and personal growth. The program grants nearly 35 artists each year the time and space to imagine new artistic work, engage in valuable dialogue and explore island connections. The Studios’ residency program is community-based and built upon the hope that visiting artists will take inspiration from Key West’s rich artistic past and present, and will engage with — and be inspired by — the remarkable people and culture that surrounds them.

Key West’s official motto, “One Human Family” reflects our commitment to living together as caring, sharing neighbors dedicated to making our home as close to paradise as we can. To that end, we encourage artists of all races, nationalities, gender identities, sexual orientations, and abilities to apply.

Applications are evaluated by selection committees comprised of working artists and professionals in the applicants’ respective fields of discipline under the five categories: Visual Arts, Literary Arts, Media Arts, Musical Arts, and Performing Arts. Acceptance to The Studios’ residency program is based on the merit of past work and the potential for creative, intellectual and personal growth. Year-to-year, the acceptance rate averages at 12-13%.

Collaborative groups are accepted, up to 3-4 members. If the collaborative team is within the same discipline and will require only one live/work space, that they share to do their work, then they may apply with one application. Make this distinction clear on the application, and it would be helpful to the jury if the team mentions how and what of each individual input becomes a collaborative work. While collaborative groups are accepted, overnight visitors/guests at the residences are not allowed. The Studios asks that applying artists submit supplementary materials to provide more information on their residency proposal (a guide to submissions is available at tskw.org), as well as propose a special project as a component of the residency. This could be in the form of a workshop, artist talk, public reading, etc. and would be offered at The Studios of Key West in exchange for the residency, if awarded one.

Residencies are almost a month, and run from the 16th of the month through the 14th of the next. You’ll find that the Key West community is very welcoming to new people (especially creative ones!) – and there is never a shortage of things to do. Your time is yours to do with as you choose, of course, and we respect that you’ll need plenty of time to dream, reflect and create. To that end, we only ask that you plan to participate in one event while you are here: our monthly On the Deck Residency Potluck. Depending on the time of year, a group of about 20-40 friends and community members gather together for an informal potluck and a chance to meet our residency artists. Each of the residency artists takes few minutes to introduce themselves and talk about their work or what they’re working on in Key West, sometimes opening their studios. It's casual, so whatever you're comfortable with sharing is great.

Open Call: Landscape, AADK Spain

Country:

AADK Spain understands residency programs as contextualized spaces, where location models the practices on, and modifies both its participants and the local communities. Thus, our Artistic Residences are an interdisciplinary and socially committed program that offers its attendants a space for analysis and production. It aims to facilitate research in rural environments, highlighting the value of local knowledge as a mean to re-think how these locations can position themselves in an era of massive urbanization through a social, historical and geographical perspective. Throughout their stay participants conform a temporary community that shares experiences and processes, fostering debate and a transversal perspective of their projects.

During the residency period AADK Spain provides tutelage and curatorial follow-up as well as assistance in production and management of projects and Open Studios night on the last Saturday of each month. Moreover, participants are encouraged to keep in touch with us after their residency ends, being our intention to promote their work in forthcoming exhibitions curated by our platform as well as in papers, conferences and / or publications.

We invite artists, designers, architects and practitioners of all related disciplines to come to Centro Negra to work at the intersection of art, geography and local communities.

The residence periods may be from one up to six months, being two months the minimum recommended for the full development of a project. The amount of participants varies every month, but reaches a maximum of six projects (including individual proposals or duos / collectives).

Our philosophy:

AADK Spain is an independent project run by artists that works through horizontal dynamics.

-It advocates for the decentralization of culture and the access to contemporary art in non-urban areas.

-It sets up a space for transdisciplinary research, with focus on knowledge

exchange and creative collaboration.

-It boosts the value of creative processes over the need for finished art pieces.

-It researches new artistic practices with the aim of expanding the borders of creative disciplines and exploring transversal pedagogies.

-It is an organic and absorptive platform, that can be transformed and resignified through all its participants.

-It promotes the work of the artists who have taken part in the project, understanding them as an active part of itself.

Visitor Center Artist Camp is a short-term, low-impact Artist Residency site, situated on a 120-acre camp bordering the Ottawa National Forest in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Explore creative practices influenced by the surrounding natural environment and focused on sustainability and self-sufficiency, while working and living communally in this beautiful wilderness environment.

JULY 27TH - AUGUST 9th 2019, with Optional Extended Work Session, August 9th - 16th.

Immerse yourself in our Local Clay Workshop, digging, hand-processing, and firing the local clay on site; work on a project in Wood and learn from a lifelong logger, timber-framer, and DIY master at his Sawmill; or propose an Independent Project that can be supported by VCAC’s rugged setting, sustainable focus, and adventurous attitude.

Previous years’ artists have cast recycled aluminum into molds made from the local clay and sand, created site-specific installations in the forest, traveled the area capturing photographs of the old mining and logging towns nearby, brewed traditional Finnish-style beer, worked on video projects, and painted images of the inspiring UP landscape.

The programming for VCAC is intended for both personal and collective growth. We will share our skills and ideas with each other though demos, presentations, and campfire discussions.

The VCAC is a great place for the creative growth of an advanced artist looking to step out of their normal routine or experiment with new materials and techniques, or for the emerging artist looking to learn new skills. Adults of all creative backgrounds, experience levels, and fields of practice are encouraged to apply. You must be at least 18 years of age.

Space is limited! We have 12 spots for 2019. Applications will be reviewed in the order received. Deadline for all applications is June 1st.
