There are eagles, lammergeiers, vultures, ibex and bears. Walk out of the residency, and within ten minutes you are completely alone in one of the most beautiful mountain landscapes in Europe. Aulus les Bains is also a spa village - there are hot water springs, and a thermal spa in the village to take advantage of the healing and relaxing properties of the water.

At this turning point between Earth rights and Earth fragility, how might we divine messages from the non-human inhabitants of our ecosystems to protect our collective future and find hope, despite threats? Can the trees and small creatures of the world teach us to adapt to a global crisis even as much of the world holds its breathe in the face of catastrophe? Are there threads from cultural, scientific and even spiritual knowledge to lead us out of a labyrinth of trouble? Activities in this workshop are designed to go beyond mindfulness and hear the silent cries of alarm and the whispers of hope we can pass on to others to collectively find the answers we need, welcome or not.

Each day of the workshop will focus on employing familiar tools in new ways: walking, journaling, recording, sharing and discussing the implications of our observations. Our frame of reference for these exercises will be the rules of trigger point theory with the goal of identifying points for possible intervention in environmental cascades.

Aviva Rahmani is one of the most important artists contributing to the current movement of environmental art. Her public and ecological art projects have involved collaborative interdisciplinary community teams with scientists, planners, environmentalists and other artists, and her projects range from complete landscape restorations to museum venues that reference painting, sound and photography.

She began her career as a performance artist, founding and directing the American Ritual Theatre (1968-1971), performing throughout California. In 1971, she collaborated with Judy Chicago, Suzanne Lacy, and Sandi Orgel on Ablutions, now considered a groundbreaking feminist performance work on rape. After graduating from California Institute of the Arts and getting her PhD from Plymouth, Aviva began presenting workshops on her theoretical approach to environmental restoration, and her transdisciplinary work has been exhibited internationally. 

Aviva's video documentation Gulf to Gulf sessions have made international impact, and it's precursor "Trigger Points/Tipping Points" premiered at the 2007 Venice Biennale. In 2002, her pioneering community action project "Blue Rocks" helped restore degraded wetlands on Vinalhaven Island, Maine (triggering a USDA investment of over $500,000). "The Blued Trees Symphony" (2015 - present) has received numerous awards and had huge impact around the globe.

"Ghost Nets 1990-2000", one of Aviva's best known works, includes her original theories of environmental restoration and trigger point theory. In 2012, she applied trigger point theory and the "Gulf to Gulf" webcasts to "Fish Story Memphis," a multi-part public art project. In 2006, she initiated a series of podcasts, "Virtual Cities and Oceans of If", which segued into webcasts on climate change. She is currently an Affiliate with the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research at the University of Colorado Boulder, Colorado (UCB), where she has been collaborating with the Director, James White since 2007 on "Gulf to Gulf", a series of webcasts on global warming with other scientists, artists and thinkers. Their first collaborative work premiered with Cultura21 in the Joseph Beuys Pavilion of the 2007 Venice Biennale.

In 2007, in collaboration with White, Aviva appeared in the collective exhibition Weather Report, debuting her work "Trigger Points, Tipping Points". She displayed a series of digital prints that superimposed satellite imagery with textual warnings on the morphing and changing of climate change on the global landscape. Her work embodies a discourse that focuses on the power dynamics of disaster and how rising sea levels will not only effect landscape, but also result in the relocation of communities and refugee migration. She seamlessly ties together climate change with the themes of class, power, and justice - a conversation frequently not as prevalent in the global warming conversation.

‘This is an intense, dense group dynamic class for dancers. It is about energy, about constantly challenging your limits. This is to gain understanding of what defines you as a dancer and pushing those boundaries over and over again. Allowing the environment to influence your dancing skills, refining tools to create new movement qualities and new rhythms. Digging deeper inside the range of your own personal dance vocabulary, becoming anyone or anything. Working with partnering, multi- directional micro- narrative movement, and transforming as a whole group. Learning how to be  unpredictable, how to recycle energy and how to use the body as your primary tool. I guarantee a new process of study in which I go, as a teacher and guide, parallel to your learning process and make you take the step of digesting the work, to get to a completely new level. ‘

This workshop is limited to 15 participants. Edivaldo comes with the aim to go even deeper than is possible when working within a big group. He wants to leave more time and space to guide the dancers attentively, on a personal level enabling all to go further with the strength of energetic movement.

When Google's Tilt Brush launched in 2016, digital artists hurled themselves at it - with its powerful control of textures, volumes and geometry, Tilt Brush was rapidly proven as the most versatile tool around for creating immersive virtual reality artwork, environments and experiences. The same year, Bjork launched "Bjork Digital", her ground-breaking exhibition of 360-degree VR music videos accompanying tracks from her album Vulnicura. It was a pinnacle year for VR, but Google were stepping into a rich, existing scene - artists had been working towards the creation of VR works since Morton Heilig's Sensorama (1956), Myron Krueger's VIDEOPLACE (1975), the StereoGraphics company's experiments throughout the 80s, SEGA VR and Nintendo Virtual Boy in the 90s, and the arrival of sophisticated and lightweight VR tech in the early 2010's.

The current generation of hardware and software allow for the fast, fluid creation of VR worlds (and the insertion of AR elements into the real world) which can be mass-experienced, blurring the limits of gaming, reality, storytelling and art. Reality can be seamlessly augmented with digital artworks, distinct virtual realities can be networked, shared and adapted by audiences, the artist becomes world-maker, the audience is no longer passive; in this brave new world, art does not reflect life - art forms the myriad worlds in which life takes place.

This workshop will blend a variety of approaches to 3D creation - Sutu will focus on painting in Tilt Brush, publishing paintings to Poly, working with Tilt Brush paintings in Unity, animating a camera through your painting, and photogrammetry scanning of the epic landscape. Jama will take the group through the VR drawing and sculpting workflow he uses to create designs for films such as Star Wars: Mandalorian, Guardians of the Galaxy and Blade Runner: Revelations

Sutu Eats Flies uses art and technology in new ways to tell stories. He has been commissioned by the likes of Marvel, Google and Disney to create VR art for projects such as Doctor Strange and Ready Player One.  He has also created four VR documentaries; Inside Manus for SBS, Mind at War for Ryot Films and The Battle of Hamel for the Australian War Memorial and Future Dreaming for NITV. He is also known for his interactive comics including the Eisner-nominated These Memories Won't Last. The Webby award-winning Nawlz, The Gold Ledger-winning Neomad, and Modern Polaxis. He holds a Honorary Doctorate of Digital Media from Central Queensland University, is a 2017 Sundance Fellow and is the co-founder of EyeJack an Augmented Reality company.

Jama Jurabaev is a professional concept artist, illustrator and a matte painter from Tajikistan, currently working in the movie and game industry in London, UK. He originally studied Aerospace Engineering but later decided to move into concept art. He is currently a freelance concept artist for LucasFilm and, previously, he worked for studios including Framestore, MPC, Marvel Studios, Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures, with credits including Ready Player One, Jurassic World 2, Star Wars, and many more. Other clients include Lexus, Infiniti, Samsung, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Nike.

In 2012 he began working as a matte painter in the commercial department at MPC (London), with clients including Audi, Samsung, Lexus, Mercedes and Nike. At MPC, Jama got his first taste of Hollywood working on movies such as Guardians of the Galaxy and X-Men: Days of Future Past. From MPC he moved to Framestore, where he got even more involved in film: he was lead concept artist for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Beauty and the Beast, Ready Player One and Pan. Other film credits include Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Blade Runner: Revelations and Geostorm.

Jama is currently collaborating with Industrial Light and Magic and Lucas Film, notably on Star Wars: Mandalorian, and developing his own projects as a director.

Laurel Halo  is an electronic musician originally from Michigan, USA but based in Berlin. She has released music in a variety of styles, ranging from ambient and experimental club, to avant-pop and dubwise electronica. Though the breadth of genre is varied, there's an intrinsic logic to Halo's aesthetic, focussed on the interplay between digital and analog production techniques, and the general subversion of standard sonic hierarchies. She has released on labels such as Honest Jon's, Latency, Livity Sound and, most notably, Hyperdub; her debut album Quarantine was named Wire Magazine's album of the year in 2012. She has collaborated with John Cale, Eli Keszler, Beatrice Dillon and Julia Holter, amongst others.

Soundtrack composition has also formed an important part of Laurel Halo's output - she composed the soundtrack for "Still Be Here", a collaborative piece featuring the Japanese virtual pop star Hatsune Miku, and scored the documentary film "Possessed" by Amsterdam based collective Metahaven and Rob Schroder. DJing has also played a role in Halo's output; from her early days as a college radio DJ, to being a resident on Berlin Community Radio (2014-2018) and Rinse.FM (2018), to gigging in many clubs around the world, the study of genre, blending and freeform aesthetics has informed her compositional approach.

This workshop will focus on electronic music composition, examining various writing approaches, aesthetic strategies and listening techniques, to further refine and hone one’s compositional voice. Group exercises, listening and analysis pair with sharing/critique sessions, as well as making new work through various writing-to-concept exercises.

The course is not meant to be a how-to course on music production; a basic understanding of electronic music production is expected, though no formal training is required. It is designed primarily for those who are seeking to deepen their compositional practice. You'll end the workshop having expanded your range of critical listening skills, learnt new technological approaches and new kit, honed your compositional approach, widened your awareness of influential movements and factors, developed your existing musical practice and composed new work.

Following your five days with Laurel Halo at CAMP, you'll have the opportunity to release, broadcast and perform your work via our range of in-house labels, CAMP Radio, Fuse Art Space and our international network of partner organisations.

Lead by two of the most influential figures working in electronic music and sound today, this workshop focuses on exploratory relationships between landscape and sound through a series of evolving performative, geometrical, time-based systems and structures. These will include location recording exercises, listening, sound synthesis, the placement of sound within the landscape, durational performances, discussion and analysis, as well as documentation of the workshop and its outcomes. Emphasis will be given to consideration of spatial audio techniques including multi-microphone and multi-speaker methodologies. We'll be working at CAMP, in the studios and recording spaces, as well as out in the epic Pyrenean landscape, in the forests, meadows, high plateaus and rocky peaks of the Pyrenees, exploring the soundscapes of rivers and lakes, glacial valleys and towering cirques.

Mark Fell is a UK-based multidisciplinary artist. Recognised as being "one of the most compelling and influential electronic artists in the world" (South Bank Centre), his practice draws upon electronic music subcultures, experimental film, contemporary philosophy and radical politics, and typically explores issues such as time-perception, technology, cognition, and collaborative process. Over the past 30 years Fell's output has grown into a significant body of work: from early electronic sound works and recorded pieces, to installation, critical texts, curatorial projects, educational systems and choreographic performances.
                   
In 2017 Mark curated a major exhibition of sound art for V-A-C foundation (Moscow) "The Geometry of Now", and led a British council research project to India to study Carnatic music composition and emergent electronic arts (with AC Projects Glasgow). Serralves Foundation (Porto) premiered "Intermetamorphosis" (2017), collection of works by fell which included new commissions as well as a retrospective pieces. In 2018 he completed two large scale multi-spatial sound works: "Protomusic#1" for Sage Gateshead, forming their flagship contribution to the Great Exhibition of the North; and "Frameworks" at Palazzo delle Zattere (Venice). 2019 saw two new performative pieces including "Hominin" (Rewire, Den Haag) and "Against Method" (Pirelli Hanger Bicocca, Milan), as well as the solo exhibition "The Concept of Time is Intrinsically Incoherent" (Focal Point Gallery, South End on Sea). Drawing from sacred geometries to programming structures, these works underlined Mark's particular interest in non-linear systems and structures, and our complex inter-relationships with them.

The diversity and importance of Mark's practice is reflected in the range and scale of institutions that have presented his work, including: VAC Foundation Palazzo delle Zattere (Venice), Hong Kong National Film Archive, The Baltic (Gateshead), Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, La Casa Encendida (Madrid), Laboral (XIxon), The Institute of Contemporary Art (London), Royal Festival Hall (London), The Serpentine (London), Victoria and Albert Museum (London), Whitechapel Gallery (London), The Institute of Contemporary Art (London), Barbican (London), Raven Row (London), Seville Biennale, The Australian Centre For Moving Image (Melbourne), Artists Space (NYC), Moma (NYC), Issue Project Room (NYC), Corcoran (DC), Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (NY), Lampo/Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts (Chicago), Zentrum fur Kunst und Medientechnologie (Karlsruhe), Pirelli Hanger Biccoca (Milan) among others. Mark's work is in the collection of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (Vienna) and has as been recognised by ARS Electronica (Linz). He has worked with a number of artists including: Yasunao Tone, Laurie Spiegel, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Okkyung Lee, Luke Fowler, Peter Gidal, Terre Thaemlitz, John Chowning, Ernest Edmonds, Peter Rehberg, Oren Ambarchi, Carl Michael Von Hausswolff and Mat Steel (as SND). Mark is currently guest professor of media art at Die Staatliche Hochschule fur Gestaltung Karlsruhe (HfG).

Carl Michael von Hausswolff lives and works in Stockholm. Since the end of the 70s, von Hausswolff has worked as a composer using recording technology as his main instrument and as a visual artist using light projections, film/video and still photography as well as other media. His interests spans from social environmental issues and political statements to abstract penetration and supra/sub-reality. He has exhibited at dOCUMENTA (Kassel), the biennials in Venice, Moscow, Liverpool, Istanbul, Sarajevo etc and in Copenhagen, Stockholm, Nicosia, Kaliningrad, Tokyo, London, New York, Philadelphia, etc. His music has been played in festivals such as Sonar (Barcelona), CTM (Berlin), L'audible (Paris), el niche Aural (Mexico City), MUTEK, (Montreal) etc. and released works on record by labels like RasterNoton (Berlin), Touch (London), Laton (Wien), iDeal (Goteborg) and MonoType (Warszaw).

His audio compositions from 1979 to 1992 consist essentially of complex macromal drones with a surface of aesthetic elegance and beauty. In the early 2000's, Carl Michael boiled away even more ornamental meat from the bones, producing pure, intuitive studies of electricity, frequency functions and tonal autism within the framework of a conceptual stringent cryption. Lately he has also developed a more conceptual form of audio art overlooking subjects such as architecture and urbanism, rats and maggots. He has created a series of social platforms, places where people can meet and consume. His "Thinner- and Low Frequency Bar" was used at the Momentum biennial in Moss, Norway, Prato, Italy and London and his "Glue- (Tobacco-) and High Frequency Lounge" was used in Geneva and in Prato. These works show Hausswolff's critical view on the society's hypocritical treatment of drugs and addiction. The audience could sniff the highly toxic substances thinner and contact glue while smoking cigarettes and getting penetrated by the either low or high sine wave tones.

Carl Michael recently curated the 12th part the sound-installation FREQ_OUT in Vienna and collaborates with artist Leif Elggren, film-maker Thomas Nordanstad, EVP re-searcher Michael Esposito and recently launched new projects with composer Hans-Joachim Roedelius, composer/artist Mark Fell, musician Jim O'Rourke, author/model Leslie Winer and as Dark Morph (with Jonsi of Sigur Ros). He has earlier collaborated with Pan sonic, The Hafler Trio, Organum and PHAUSS.

Gavin Bryars is without a doubt one of the world's most celebrated living composers. He emerged to the musical establishment in the early sixties, playing bass with improvisers Derek Bailey and Tony Oxley - his relationship with improvisation, although of some significance, was short lived, and by the late 60's he was working with John Cage, Cornelius Cardew and John White. His first major works - The Sinking of the Titanic (1969), originally released on Brian Eno's Obscure label in 1975, and Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet (1971) - were released in new versions in the 1990s, selling over a quarter of a million copies.
    
Opera and ballet have formed important strands in Gavin's practice - he has written five full-length operas, working with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Opera de Lyon, English National Opera, Mainz Opera, Long Beach Opera and the Opera de Paris, alongside such renowned directors as Robert Wilson, Atom Egoyan, Georges Delnon and Jean Lacornerie. He has worked with Opera North Projects and the Royal Shakespeare Company since 2006. He has done scores for over twenty ballets and his collaboration with Merce Cunningham, Biped, toured worldwide with the Cunningham Company and subsequently throughout France with CNDC Angers’ recreation in Merce’s centenary year 2019.

Elsewhere in Gavin's extensive catalogue of works can be found vocal works written for The Hilliard Ensemble, Latvian Radio Choir, Trio Mediaeval, The Crossing, Iarla O’Lionaird and commissions for Bournemouth Sinfonietta, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Primavera Chamber Orchestra Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and London Sinfonietta. His background in the visual arts has resulted in works for the opening of the Tate Gallery in Liverpool, an installation in the Chateau d'Oiron, commissioned by the French Ministry of Culture, a work for the Tate Gallery St Ives, and a project for the Valencia Architecture Biennale. This visual arts affinity has also led to highly successful collaborations with David Byrne, Bruce MacLean, Bill Culbert, Juan Munoz, Christian Boltanski, Will Alsop and others.

This course does not take a narrow dogmatic line, but rather will take Gavin's work as a starting point to examine compositional forms and strategies, working closely with the group members’ existing practice and methods, and with the aim of each student developing a finished work for performance at the end of the session. Participants from all musical backgrounds are welcome, whether classically trained, improvisors, sound artists, installation artists, conceptual artists or favouring any other approach. Bring works in progress to be developed; or start on something new whether alone or collectively. Develop new projects and ideas using CAMP's resources, or work with the extraordinary natural environment.

Sessions will include:

  • Individual tuition sessions, examining and developing each student's existing work and practice
  • Group sessions examining different types of musical material, including vocal music (both solo and ensemble), string music, opera, music for dance, composing in relation to music from the past, and arranging the music of others
  • Evening events showing Gavin's work in opera and film
  • Development of each student's work for final performance by the group at the end of the course

The sessions will be accompanied by optional outdoors activities led by CAMP crew, including guided mountaineering, visits to local beauty points, and downtime to hang out, relax, enjoy the local food and wine, and learn informally from Gavin, the CAMP crew, and your fellow students. Following the course, further support of the work developed will come in the form of performance and release opportunities via Fuse Art Space and our range of in-house record labels, as well as broadcast opportunities on CAMP Radio.
