Building Your Own 4x5 View Camera with Drew Nikonowicz

Description:

Join photographer Drew Nikonowicz for a two-day workshop intended for photographers interested in learning about large format photography, while building their own 4×5 View Camera – courtesy of Standard Cameras. This DIY approach will lead to a deeper understanding of image-making both inside and outside the camera. Regardless of your background, this workshop will leave you with all the knowledge and tools you need to successfully shoot with a large format camera. Drew founded Standard Cameras in 2018 as a platform to empower photographers everywhere to improve their skills through affordable equipment and valuable educational content.

Participants will begin by assembling their own Standard 4×5 as a group, while familiarizing themselves with their new 4×5. After assembly is complete, they will have an opportunity to practice making photographs with both a standard film back and Polaroid film back. Large format is a slow process, which forces the user to focus on each image in a radically different way. With Drew’s guidance, participants will receive advice on how to approach image-making with large format through hands-on practice, and later discussions on compositional and conceptual considerations while shooting. Participants will take home a hand-made Standard 4×5, several Polaroid photographs, and information on large format equipment.

Film, lenses, and additional equipment will be provided.

Drew Nikonowicz (born in St. Louis, Missouri, 1993) earned a BFA degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2016. His work employs analog photographic processes as well as computer simulations to deal with exploration and experience in contemporary culture. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally. In 2015 he received the Aperture Portfolio Prize and the Lenscratch Student Prize. In 2017 Nikonowicz completed a one-year residency at Fabrica Research Centre. He now lives and works in the United States in Saint Louis, Missouri as an artist and owner of the company Standard Cameras. His first photobook, This World and Others Like It, was co-published by Yoffy Press and Fw:Books in 2019.

Film for this workshop has been generously provided by Kodak Professional.

Tuition for this two-day workshop is $700 and includes one Standard 4×5 Camera. Tuition also includes 4×5 sheet film and Polaroid film, and lunch and light refreshments for both days.

Description:

Trainee Program for National and International Dance Students Ages 17 and Up

The Professional Division Program for Young Adults at Ballet des Amériques is a unique, well-rounded and highly refined training program designed by award-winning choreographer, director, master teacher, coach, and pedagogue Carole Alexis with the aim of mentoring young dancers toward successful professional careers.

The program was conceived and developed by Carole Alexis and Ballet des Amériques after years of searching for dancers to join the professional company at Ballet des Amériques revealed that there were many talented young dancers who simply lacked crucial finishing touches in their training and the guidance and ethical standards required for professional careers.

Encouraged by students and members of her professional company who were impressed by her ability to transform dancers for the better, Alexis founded the Professional Division Program for Young Adults in the spirit of 20th century dance conservatory training, which often offered particularly talented young dancers an extra year or two of training after graduation to pull forth latent, yet untapped technical and artistic ability.

Nowadays it is not uncommon for dance students to be left to fend for themselves after graduation. The Professional Division Program at Ballet des Amériques offers young dancers an effective solution by providing ongoing personal career guidance, unparalleled refinement of dance technique and artistry, guides to professional company etiquette, dance coaching, performance experience, and innumerable hidden keys to professional success in the dance world. It is the only training program of its kind in New York City and Westchester offering invaluable one-on-one mentorship with a company director, expert pedagogue and international choreographer.

Founder and director of Ballet des Amériques, Carole Alexis, started her career as a multi-talented child prodigy who trained with the celebrated French choreographer Maurice Béjart, Cuban legend Jorge Lefebre, and Georgian star Nikoloz Makhateli before launching a successful international performing arts career both as a singer and dancer. Her dance students have been accepted to the prestigious summer programs at Paris Opera Ballet, Bolshoi Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, and Juilliard as well as the renowned Varna International Ballet Competition. Alexis’ students have also held professional contracts with Dance Theatre of Harlem, Ballet West and the English National Ballet, among others.

All of Carole Alexis’ students bear her unique signature of clean lines, exemplary alignment, and impeccable technique.

If you are a young dancer on the verge of a professional career and are seeking honest, unparalleled guidance and refinement of dance technique and artistry as well as invaluable secrets to professional company etiquette, career longevity and success, Ballet des Amériques and Carole Alexis invite you to audition for the Professional Division Program for Young Adults. We look forward to reviewing your application.
