Introduction to the Darkroom is designed for newcomers to analogue photography who wish to learn basic darkroom techniques, including black & white film development, making contact sheets and printing with an enlarger. Previous darkroom experience is not necessary, and a basic understanding of exposure, although useful, is not essential.

You are also welcome to bring along any exposed B&W films (or negatives) of your own, whether 35mm, 120 or 5x4 format. You will to be able to process and print from them on the day if you choose - paper and chemicals are supplied - and you may take prints home with you.

Intro to the Darkroom is a practical, hands-on, one-day course delivered in a fully-equipped darkroom just minutes from our Shoreditch HQ.

Requirements: A set of developed 35mm or 120mm black and white negatives. If you don't own any, just let us know and we can provide them on the day.

This course is delivered from a brand new darkroom located in the iconic Holborn Studios, just a stone's throw from our premises in Shoreditch. Holborn Studios has been established for over 30 years, and has seen uncountable famous photographers coming through it's doors, including the likes of David Bailey, Terry O'Neil, Annie Leibovitz and Nick Knight.

Photoshop Foundation – Level 1

Photoshop Foundation - Level 1 is a course aimed at beginners and will deliver a comprehensive introduction to the image editing program. This course will teach you the fundamentals of the Photoshop Workflow, the RAW converter (ACR) and making Adjustment Layers.

Learn to improve the visual quality of your image by making fundamental edits such as improving the tonal range, adjusting the brightness, contrast, hue, saturation and using a variety of tools and adjustments. You will also learn the basics of cloning to remove unwanted elements in an image.

This course focuses on image editing and leads onto our Photoshop Foundation - Level 2 course. If you already know the basics, consider starting with Level 2.

Lightroom Foundation

Adobe Lightroom Classic CC (formally known as Lightroom CC (confusing isn't it?!)) is becoming more and more popular with photographers and is increasingly being seen as the main retouching program. Lightroom goes hand in hand with Photoshop and together sets the industry standard of image editing. 

The software allows you to sort, rename, edit, tag, as well as make exposure and other batch image adjustments, non-destructively. 

This course will take you from the setting up of this affordable piece of software, looking at importing your images, to editing and organising them. The Develop module is where you can correct and process RAW and JPEG files, as well as apply a range of effects, all covered in detail.

The course will also look at how images can be exported directly from Lightroom to websites, Facebook, used in album design or made into prints.

This intense and condensed one day photography course is aimed at complete beginners who own a Digital SLR camera and want to maximise its potential.

The course is set in a classroom environment and participants are taught theory which is supported by creative practical exercises inside the classroom and also outdoors around the local area.

Learning in Galleries (short course)

The Learning in Galleries short course is an innovative four-day programme, designed by UCL Institute of Education in partnership with Engage, the National Association for Gallery Education, as an introduction to education in galleries.

The taught sessions will take place at UCL Institute of Education and selected London galleries. In addition participants are required to undertake some gallery-based research to inform discussion. With sessions led by established gallery professionals and academics, including: Jane Sillis: Director Engage, Angela Rogers: Engage Cymru.

Available dates
The course is taught over four days (2 days at London galleries, 2 days at UCL Institute of Education). The dates are 11 July, 12 July, 25 July and 26 July 2019.

Who this course is for
The course is designed and aimed at early career gallery educators.

Course content and learning outcomes
The taught seminars and workshops will cover the following subjects:

  • positioning learning in the gallery
  • learning theories
  • the gallery as a pedagogic institution
  • contemporary art & artists in education
  • digital technologies
  • interpretation, theory and practice
  • career pathways for gallery educators.

Participants will gain confidence and understanding in these aspects of learning in galleries.

Fees

Thursday Evening Ceramics - Throwing Workshop

This course is designed to help total beginngers develop basic throwing skills and to help existing learners build on existing skills and develop these further. Learner requests are encouraged for new techniques to be shown and/or recapped where appropriate.

Suitable for all levels, no prior knowledge of pottery is required to attend this course. The course is ideal for beginners or for those who have some understanding of wheel throwing and would like to improve their skills.

The course will cover the basics of preparing and cetering clay, throwing a range of basic forms (cylinders & bowls), turning and trimming work, how to attach handles (where appropriate to skill level), basic decoration skills and how to glaze work.

All equipment, decoration and glaze materials are included, we do make a small charge (priced per kilo) for the clay used before the first firing only. You should bring an apron, suitable clothing and you are encouraged to build up your own basic ceramic toolkit.
