3D Laser Cut Emojis at MadFabLab

Want to bring your favourite Emoji into the physical realm using free 3D modelling software?

On this 2.5 hour workshop, you'll learn the basic principles of 3D modelling using free online software Tinkercad. Using the cube tool, you'll build a 3D model of your favourite emoji - or create your own! You'll then be introduced to Slicer, a modelling software that will prepare your model to be laser cut and assembled in stacked slices.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for all abilities, and we welcome beginners with no previous experience.

Equipment you’ll need

All materials and equipment will be provided on the day.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

There are a number of options for getting to us by public transport. See below for all your options.

By tram

The nearest tram stop is Shudehill, on the Bury–Altrincham and Rochdale–East Didsbury lines. For other lines, Piccadilly Gardens is the closest and we are just 5 minutes walk away from here.

By bus

The nearest local bus station is Shudehill/Thomas Street, for visitors coming from North Manchester. For other local buses, Manchester Piccadilly Bus Station is located just 5 minutes walk away. The nearest national bus station is the Shudehill Bus Interchange, although Chorlton Street Bus Station is 20 minutes walk away.

By train

MadFabLab is less than 15 minutes walk away from Manchester Piccadilly station and across the road from Manchester Victoria train station.

By air

From Manchester International Airport, there is a train station at Terminal 2 with regular trains to Manchester Piccadilly Train station which take approximately 35 minutes. Alternatively, taxis are available outside all terminals and will take roughly 30 minutes on a good day, costing around £25.

By car

If you are driving to reach us, there is limited on-street parking in the area. Within a minutes walk of the building there is also Miller Street Car Park and Total Car Parks LTD.

By bike

We are currently looking into installing secure bike parking.

Introduction to Live Visuals using VDMX at MadFabLab

Want to learn one of the most powerful live video-manipulation programmes out there?

This 6 hour workshop will introduce you to the basics of the live video manipulation software, VDMX. Participants will learn the interface, how to mix videos and apply effects, as well as the artistic principles of live video performance. This process is also a great experimental way of making audio-visual pieces without time-consuming software.

Who is this course for

This workshop is aimed at people with no prior knowledge of VDMX. Participants will need to be confident with using computers, and preferably with a knowledge of music and/or video software.

If you think this course may be too advanced for you, please contact us and we talk you through the workshop :)

Equipment needed

All equipment will be provided on the day, though you are welcome to bring your own laptop and MIDI controller. Please note VDMX is a MacOS based software, so your laptop will need to be loaded with MacOS.

We can also provide you with plenty of video material to get you started, though you might want to bring your own. Please be aware that HD videos tend to cause machines to lag, so standard resolution and under is prefered - please contact us prior to the workshop if you are unsure.

3D Head Scan and Print at MadFabLab

Want to immortalise yourself in an act of pure self-indulgence? Maybe you’d like to give a loved one a memento as a reminder of why they love you?

In this 1.5 hour workshop, you’ll have your head 3D scanned and printed to use as a new Facebook profile picture, trinket on the mantelpiece, or as a keepsake!

We’ll give you an overview on 3D printing and scanning, along with some knowledge that you can try at home.

We’ll be running two sessions of this workshop:

Museum Education Practicum

The Studio Museum in Harlem is the nexus for artists of African descent locally, nationally and internationally and for work that has been inspired and influenced by black culture.

This Fall 2018 the Studio Museum is offering a free course called the Museum Education Practicum, which is designed to provide emerging museum and arts educators with an intensive eight-week training and development program. The course is centered on museums, arts education, and equity, and allows participants the opportunity to gain firsthand experience facilitating and developing inquiry-based tactics and strategies for engaging adult, school, youth and family audiences.

The participants will be exploring both theory and practice, entering into a very specific conversation around artists of African descent, contemporary art practice, and educational strategies. The program cycle runs October 2 – November 27, 2018, every Tuesday evening from 5:00pm – 7:30pm. The course in Curatorial Practice is an English-taught, intensive program on the history of contemporary visual arts and practices of exhibition-making, taking place during the Venice Biennale. Through interdisciplinary lectures, the course provides practical training and experience within museums and exhibition settings. Its international faculty includes curators and museum professionals, artists and critics. The course is designed to increase the students understanding of the intellectual and technical tasks of the curator figure related to the set up of exhibitions and projects. The lectures cover both theoretical and practical topics that go from History of Exhibition to Exhibition Management.

The students participate in weekly activities such as artist studio visits, tours of exhibition spaces, networking events, and workshops with a variety of experts and practitioners. The program culminates with the set up of an exhibition or an art event.
