Description
The Department of Art and Art History at The University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in the area of Painting & Drawing. We are looking for candidates who integrate innovative practices while maintaining a strong understanding of the traditions and history of painting and drawing. Ideal candidates will possess expertise in the technical aspects of painting, as well as a deep engagement with current theoretical and aesthetic discussions in the field. Applicants should demonstrate a teaching approach that blends technical skill-building with conceptual development, encouraging experimentation informed by art theory. Applicants should have or clearly demonstrate potential for a nationally-recognized career as a contemporary artist.
The anticipated start date is Fall 2025. This position requires relocation to Austin, TX. An MFA is required. Post-graduate teaching experience is desirable but not essential. A tenure-track assistant professor typically teaches two courses per semester and advises students at all levels. Undergraduate Studio Art offerings range from Introductory classes to advanced painting and drawing. Opportunities to teach graduate courses, which serve students from all media areas, rotate among studio faculty. Faculty also perform service - including governance, curricular development, and other committee work - critical to the missions of the Department of Art & Art History, the College of Fine Arts, and the University as a whole.
As a tier-one research institution, The University of Texas at Austin expects tenure-track faculty to actively pursue original creative work and research within their field to establish and maintain a nationally recognized profile as a contemporary artist, typically through publication and exhibitions.
The successful applicant will join a large and vibrant department totaling nearly 50 tenure-track and professional-track faculty members, including 21 in studio faculty. (The other areas being Art History and Art Education.) The Studio Art program at UT serves approximately 250 undergraduate majors and 20 MFA students. In 2024, US News and World Report ranked the program 23rd among Best Art Schools.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
• MFA in Studio Art
• Promise of national/international artistic recognition
• Proficiency in Painting and interdisciplinary practices
Preferred Qualifications
• Graduate and Undergraduate teaching experience
• Familiarity with expanded Painting & Drawing processes
• Experience teaching and mentoring students from many backgrounds
