Through artist residencies, professional services, and creative collaborations, CultureHub advances the work of artists experimenting with emerging technologies and fostering new artistic forms.

Job Purpose: CultureHub is seeking a self-directed, interdisciplinary-minded creative technologist to work with the LA studio in an ever-changing media environment. The Creative Technologist collaborates with the CultureHub staff, resident artists, associated artists, and collaborators to develop and execute new multimedia projects.

Summary: CultureHub is a globally networked technology-based non-profit arts organization with a focus on the application of new and emerging technologies in creative and educational contexts. The CultureHub LA Creative Technologist works with the CultureHub LA staff to ensure that the programming and operations of the Los Angeles hub run smoothly and effectively. The Creative Technologist will oversee the design and execution of the technical and technological aspects of the organization’s artistic and educational programming, as well as serve contribute significantly to R&D efforts.

Critical Tasks and Duties:

  • Maintaining and developing new strategies for the implementation of technologies within the CultureHub facilities and environment. Including but not limited to: hardware video conferencing codecs, software applications, cameras, projectors, monitors, audio and video mixers and Internet infrastructure.
  • Set-up and run technical aspects of artist residencies, productions, workshops, and other events at the CultureHub LA studio
  • Set-up and run technical aspects of off-site events and productions at satellite and partner venues
  • Coordinate internal and external correspondences with staff, artists, and technologists from pre- to post-production
  • Communicate with staff, artists, and technologists in other global CultureHub locations to facilitate multi-locational programming
  • Catalog studio equipment, check for malfunctions, and research and vet new purchases, ensuring smooth operation of technical resources
  • Advise and assist artists and clients to implement technology-related goals
  • Engineer documentation and broadcasts of content
  • Train staff and artists in technology and equipment operation
  • Research new practices and technologies for adoption and application
  • Operate under deadlines in high pressure environments with professionalism and a system-level perspective
  • Facilitating R&D efforts in art and technology fields

Relationships and Roles:

The operation of a globally networked performance space is an emergent discipline that encompasses various media practices. The Creative Technologist will define their duties in response to continuous change, in intimate collaboration with CultureHub staff and also other media professionals, collaborators, and clients of CultureHub. Operations, including troubleshooting for potential problems within daily activities and events, require careful scheduling and coordination within the team. Working directly with the CultureHub staff, the Creative Technologist ensures that all of the organization’s programming and operations are successful.

Job Requirements:

  • Strong media production and technical/technological ability and experience in one or more of the following areas: creative technology, performance design, experiential design, immersive environments, art direction, creative direction, media production, digital media management, A/V coordination, live-streaming technology
  • Strong research and troubleshooting skills
  • Strong communication skills, i.e. visualization, cataloging, training, presentation
  • Working knowledge of contemporary art and media practices
  • In-depth understanding of live multimedia production
  • Strong computer skills and experience with media interfaces
  • Some video content creation and post-production skills
  • Meticulous organization, attention to detail, and ability to track deadlines
  • Ability to move Audio/Visual equipment weighing up to 50 pounds across studio or event venue occasionally for various production and event needs

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with live-streaming technology in an art or performance context
  • Experience with integrating media with live performance
  • Experience in a multimedia production or incubator/residency setting
  • Experience working collaboratively with teams of technicians in a leadership capacity
