Skinner is seeking a Director for our Fine Books & Rare Manuscripts Department to provide curatorial, business development, auction, and administrative support for the department. We are looking for a personable, detail-oriented individual who has the knowledge and skills in rare books and manuscripts to further the growth of this important area.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and executing a plan for sustaining existing, and creating new business
  • Managing departmental marketing communications and public relations; liaising with Skinner corporate Marketing Department
  • Managing departmental budget, expenses, revenue and profit; liaising with Skinner corporate Finance Department
  • Providing appraisal services including object identification and valuation; liaising with Skinner corporate Appraisal Services Department
  • Overseeing inquiries for auction, consignment and appraisals services
  • Providing auction support, including research, estimating auction value, cataloging, supporting photography of items for auction and providing detailed condition reports for prospective bidders
  • Liaising into the full Skinner auction schedule

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience identifying, appraising and cataloging decorative arts and furniture in an auction house, gallery, museum or related field 
  • Attention to detail, aesthetic sense, can-do attitude, ability to juggle multiple tasks, adhere to strict deadlines, and work collaboratively as a team member a must
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; end-user proficiency with online and social media platforms such as Pinterest, Facebook, and Twitter
  • Ability to learn existing Auction and Inventory Management System 
  • Responsibility for Profit & Loss a plus
