Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is a multi-disciplinary arts center located in Brooklyn, New York. Reporting to the AVP of Technology & Business Operations, the Director of IT will enable a high-performance, flexible, robust, cost-effective, and forward-thinking IT environment. Design, advise, consult, and implement all IT architecture and methodologies to accelerate BAM’s strategy. Ensure that IT services meet service level expectations, with minimal interruptions or negative impact to BAM operations. Execute the long and short term departmental and greater institutional objectives. Establish goals and priorities for IT operations and provide direct management of daily operations by establishing team goals and priorities. Collaborate with the AVP of Technology & Business Ops on information security and technical risk management for the organization.

In addition, provide a robust and secure IT infrastructure that supports both on-premises and remote access for staff to information and enterprise systems. Demonstrate fiscal responsibility by staying within annual and multi-year departmental budgets.  Communicate and manage all performance objectives to ensure compliance with company core values and business goals. Also, establish and maintain compliance with industry standards such as PCI, NY SHIELD ACT and the NIST cybersecurity framework. Own and maintain up-to-date Disaster Recovery, Business Continuity, and Cybersecurity Incident Response plans.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Manage Technical Infrastructure

  • Manage and secure all aspects of IT infrastructure and networking, including identity management, remote access, application infrastructure (physical and virtual servers, storage, etc.) both on-premises and in the cloud, networking equipment and related services (switches, DNS, Wi-Fi, internet, etc.), firewall and related security appliances.
  • Manage the provisioning, configuration and monitoring of servers and services.
  • Serve as an integral team member within overall technology leadership, participating in architectural recommendations and strategic decisions.
  • Improve efficiency, flexibility, and resilience by establishing repeatable operations standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Define and direct IT and infrastructure-related strategies to ensure they align with the strategic direction, growth, and performance of the organization.
  • Recommend insights contributing to overall organization technology infrastructure strategic management.


IT Operations

  • Develop and manage IT Operations budget including software licensing/renewals, forecasting expenses, identifying efficiencies/cost savings.
  • Engage and collaborate with external service providers and outsourced services to complement core team responsibilities.
  • Manage negotiation, contracts, invoicing, and payments with hardware, software, and service providers to make efficient use of allocated budget.
  • Lead IT Operations within the organization and motivate the IT team to implement "best practices" in all IT Operations initiatives
  • Identify requirements and manage the creation, implementation, documentation, and ongoing maintenance of IT security policies and procedures, including timely publication and periodic review.
  • Manage the selection, development, documentation, and deployment of IT security management and monitoring systems and tools.
  • Act as a primary Technology team lead on data privacy/security projects, collaborating on related policies, surveys, and audits to ensure compliance.
  • Implement and manage a disaster recovery and backup strategy, and coordinate with other IT staff to monitor and regularly test the DR procedures.
  • Ensure IT infrastructure meets availability and operational standards for critical business processes.
  • Define technical standards for the tools, processes, and methods used within areas of responsibility.
  • Frequently interact with BAM's senior executives, business stakeholders, the Technology team, and BAM’s outsourced service providers.


  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field and/or 10 years of experience providing network, voice, and application technical support. 
  • Six years of experience supervising support technicians
  • Strong knowledge of networking concepts and protocols, including DHCP, DNS, WINS, VPN, VLAN, and LDAP, as they apply to a Windows networking environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate issue resolution across a broad set of technologies: infrastructure, applications, networked devices, etc. 
  • Ability to think strategically while working through tactical short-term priorities.
  • Proficiency in Information Security principles across network infrastructures, identity management, operating systems, and data preservation.
  • Demonstrated ability to build/foster a broad range of business relationships.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and presentation skills with the ability to handle multiple, high priority projects with a keen attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management, decision-making, problem solving, documentation, planning, organization and writing skills.
  • Confirmed experience of strategic and tactical decision-making that reflects good judgment, creative problem-solving skills, and resiliency.


Working Conditions

  • Sitting for extended periods while working at a computer. 
  • Occasional lifting of IT equipment, not typically exceeding 50 pounds. 
  • Walking required to support multiple buildings within three block radius.  
  • Possible evening or weekend work to resolve system issues or complete after-hours maintenance 

Compensation: The salary for this position is $125,000 - $150,000 per year. This position is full-time, exempt, and eligible for benefits.
