Employment Practices Group is an external HR Consulting Company recruiting for our client, an established art gallery located in the SoHo neighborhood of New York City.

This is a direct-hire position based on-site in the SoHo area of Manhattan.

Overview of Position

We’re adding a new full-time on-site position to our team – Manager, Gallery Administration and Communications. This role will coordinate art-handling, communications and marketing, manage day-to-day operations and human resources, and support the collaboration of the other functions in the gallery including: registrar, sales, infrastructure and special projects. It reports to the Managing Director of the gallery.

The Role 

  • Oversees the day-to-day operations of the gallery and its key functions with a focus on art handling, inventory, and overall administration.
  • Partners with Director of Sales, Registrar and Operations Manager to schedule and prioritize projects including allocation of resources.
  • Supports the inventory process and movement of art to and from artists and institutions
  • Serves as point of contact and decision-maker when there are overlapping requirements among gallery functions.
  • Creates and manages art handlers’ and other crew’s schedule in coordination with overall gallery requirements.
  • Oversees basic administration functions including, policies, procedures, attendance, work areas, equipment, storage issues, etc. Corresponds with and acts as a liaison with vendors and other external stakeholders on behalf of the gallery.
  • Collaborates with external human resources firm.
  • Assists Managing Director with running internal meetings, strategic planning, licensing, legal and other projects.
  • Develops strategy, executes and manages gallery website and social media-related marketing across range of channels
  • Oversees day-to-day relationship with external IT vendor, troubleshoots technology-related issues, and guides technology-related strategic planning.
  • Oversees incoming mail and related documents and coordinates next actions with Managing Director and bookkeeper as required
  • Responsible for updating and continuously activating Covid and other safety protocols.

Our Ideal Candidate should be….

An art professional who has:

  • 10+ years of experience working in a gallery or museum with expertise in both the commercial and art handling sides of the business
  • an enthusiastic appreciation for contemporary art in many forms
  • knowledge of best practices in art handling, safety; Able to lift and move art as part of the team when necessary
  • Knowledge of best practices of marketing communications

A problem solver and manager of projects and people who is:

  • able to solve problems effectively, bringing in the right resources and support when necessary
  • organized with an ability to track details and major projects at the same time
  • an effective leader with at least five (5) years of experience managing people in a gallery or museum
  • able to collaborate with team members that are working remotely while this position is primarily on-site
  • able to build productive working relationships at all levels of an organization.

A communicator and marketer:

  • Effective communicator to various audiences including colleagues, clients, artists, vendors/service providers;
  • Demonstrates strong communications and writing skills;
  • Has experience developing and executing websites and social media-related marketing across range of channels
