Master Carpenter

Full-time: Exempt Status

Reports to: Production Manager & Technical Director, Waterville Opera House

The Master Carpenter, under the supervision of the Production Manager and Technical Director, is responsible for the construction, mounting, and rigging of the scenery. The Master Carpenter is also responsible for the maintenance of the set shop & equipment, and striking shows. The Master Carpenter may also be asked to operate the fly system, load in/out for concerts, and perform some facility maintenance. This is a year-round, full-time, salaried position reporting to the Production Manager & Technical Director.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Builds scenery and set pieces in coordination with the Production Manager & Technical Director
  • Follows construction schedule for productions and updates the Production Manager & Technical Director on daily progress/difficulties.
  • Runs technical elements of light or sound for theatrical productions and rentals as needed
  • Works collaboratively with the Production Manager & Technical Director to implement all rigging needs
  • Maintains safe practices and procedures
  • Maintains set shop, tools, and equipment
  • As needed, acts as backstage crew/fly operator for performances as directed by the Production Manager & Technical Director
  • Ensures the ongoing maintenance, cleanliness, and safe operation of all areas
  • Loads in/out of concerts and other events as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • 3-5 years of carpentry experience
  • Clear understanding of and strict adherence to safety protocols
  • Good judgment and discretion, ability to manage shifting and competing priorities, and a positive attitude
  • Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds
  • Experience and comfort using ladders and lifts
  • Strong interpersonal, customer service, and team building skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work with diverse audiences, staff, and volunteers
  • A valid driver’s license
  • Self-motivated
  • Ability to work nights and weekends as required

Additional Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and experience with lighting, rigging, and the associated tools and safety protocols
  • Knowledge and experience with the following preferred: ETC Eos TI, Allen & Heath Avantis sound console, Bose MA12
  • Ability to read ground plans, sections, light plots, and other theatrical specifications
  • Knowledge and experience with a theatrical scenic environment and rigging
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Q-lab, and Dropbox and the ability to become adept with new software

Physical Demands/Conditions/Requirements:

  • Lifting (up to 50 pounds) required. Full range of physical mobility including walking, sitting, standing, stooping, carrying, reaching and manual dexterity is required.
