As the sun descends and the night air turns cold, the moon rises - and with it, we are showered with magick and the prospect of change. Glowing like never before, it's luminosity invites us all to tread into the dark and embrace the magnitude of this forthcoming transformation.

At Sarabande, we invite the upcoming full moon in this special fashion drawing workshop with Sarabande alumni Mab George Sanders. Texture, shading, movement- this is the perfect opportunity to practice or establish your signature style under the tutelage of Mab George Sanders.

An educational embroidery workshop for the whole family!

About this event

In this workshop, you’ll learn about identifying poison ivy and the basics of embroidery. You’ll then use this knowledge to create your own embroidered poison ivy piece, which will become part of a collaborative artwork that will be displayed at the Kortright Centre for Conservation! Materials will be provided. All workshop participants will receive a poison ivy pocket guide to take home.

Dates: Sunday July 24 - 1pm to 3pm OR Sunday August 21 - 10am to 12pm

*Please note: the same workshop will run both days, so content will not change.

Participants do not need previous embroidering or sewing experience to be part of this workshop. All materials are provided for you, along with hands-on, step-by-step instruction. This workshop is designed for participants aged 10 years and older.

There is a limited number of spots available and registration is required. This ensures we maximize the learning and enjoyment for participants attending the workshop.

About the Instructor:

Sarah Zanchetta (she/her, b. 1996) is an artist and writer whose research-based textile practice considers the lost knowledge in connection to the land and plants which surround us. She is currently investigating the relationship between humans and toxicity, specifically the fringed relationships we have with poisonous plants. Zanchetta received her BFA from OCAD University in 2018, and is currently enrolled in the Masters of Visual Studies at the University of Toronto. Since 2017, her work has been exhibited both locally and internationally, including shows at The Power Plant Contemporary Gallery, Gladstone Hotel, and ON-ART Gallery.

Seasonal Arts for Well-Being: Family Workshops

Type:

City:

Date:
Saturday, July 23, 2022

Taking place weekly on Saturdays (from July 23 - August 27) and specially designed for 6-11 year olds, these family workshops combine conversational-based teaching, painting, meditation and calming movement practices. The sessions will nourish young children’s holistic health & wellbeing through creative learning, colour therapy, self-expression and seasonal artworks.

Inspired by Ayurveda & Traditional Chinese Medicine, the seasonal-themed classes will each explore a framework of associated shapes, colours, emotions and tangible representations, allowing children to build a greater understanding of their mental, physical and environmental health as one. The course will be led by certified Holistic Health Practitioner Savannah Sinhal and is open to all families with children aged 6-11 years.

The course will offer a mix of verbal, visual, practical and kinaesthetic learning styles, encouraging all types of learners to engage as active and curious participants. Using paint as the artistic medium of choice, children are free to use brushes, sponges, sticks or fingers to explore the colours of the season and their therapeutic qualities. After learning the primary elements of each season through story-telling and discussion, children will then create abstract self-portraits, expressing what their individual picture of joy and wellness looks and feels like. During the final class, participants will then create a holistic artwork encompassing ideas from all of their previous works, representing themselves in their personal place of harmony and wholeness.

The aim for this course series is to encourage children to expand their imagination and understanding of what health is. Learners will leave with a new understanding of how their environment effects their mood and health and practical ways to express and balance this. Families/parents/guardians are encouraged to also learn alongside their children and create together during the sessions.
