Fifty photographs and films which stimulate conversations about our world, its inhabitants and our treatment of both have been shortlisted for Earth Photo 2019, an international photography project developed jointly by Forestry England and the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers), and generously supported by Stanfords. The exhibition will be displayed at the Royal Geographical Society from 6 July – 22 August 2019 and will also tour to Grizedale Forest (Cumbria), Moors Valley Country Park and Forest (Dorset) and Fineshade Wood (Northamptonshire).

Artists were invited to submit images and moving image works relevant to one of the following four categories: PEOPLE, NATURE, PLACE and CHANGING FORESTS. The shortlist is made up of artwork that asks questions - often uncomfortable ones - which encourage the viewer to engage with the subject matter and the stories behind it. Visitors to Earth Photo 2019 will find themselves simultaneously enchanted by places so beautiful they appear unearthly, and haunted by landscapes devastated by natural disasters or human misuse and abuse.

The 2019 exhibition was selected by a distinguished panel with expertise in the fields of photography, film, geography and the environment. Chaired by Award-Winning photographer Marissa Roth, the panel included Enzo Barracco, photographer; Vivien Godfrey, Chairman and CEO of Stanfords; Vron Harris, artist; Magdalena Herrera, Director of Photography at Geo France; Karen Noble, Collections & Exhibitions Coordinator at the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego; Simon Norfolk, photographer; Paul Presley, Editor of Geographical; Michael Pritchard, Director of Education and Public Affairs at the Royal Photographic Society; and James Whitlow Delano, photographer.
