RAISE YOUR VOICE: A writing workshop with Angela Jackson-Brown and Sue Brannan Walker
Application Deadline: Thursday, October 15th, 2020

The Artists’ Sanctum is pleased to present the first in a series of bi-annual workshops which aim to cultivate creative solutions for today's problems.

Raise Your Voice is a writing workshop designed to introduce young people to writing as a tool for social justice and self-expression. Nationally renowned poets and educators, Angela Jackson-Brown and Dr. Sue Brannan Walker will share their experience and knowledge with a community of high school writers selected by The Artists’ Sanctum board.

Great writers from Shakespeare and Orwell to Audre Lorde have inspired societies to rethink their values and shift the course of history. We at the Artists’ Sanctum, believe that by nurturing creative expression in young people, we can help to build a better future.

Angela Jackson-Brown and Sue Brannan Walker, will guide participants through a series of exercises specially conceived to awaken their creative writing muscle and apply it to social justice. Both writers have decades of experience in writing, publishing, and teaching, and are uniquely primed to guide young voices.

During the 4 hour workshop, Angela Jackson-Brown and Sue Brannan Walker will introduce participants to the concepts behind socially-conscious writing. They will guide them through writing exercises, a “free writing” session, and offer opportunities to both share their work with peers and receive one-on-one feedback. A selection of poems produced during the workshop will be published on The Artists’ Sanctum website.
