Eelen explores narrative structures that unfold across time and space. His iconography is predominantly figurative and representational, addressing recurring subjects such as portraiture, nature, and the war in Syria.

The virtuosity of his painting technique reflects a strong engagement with the long tradition of painting. Eelen’s work draws inspiration from seventeenth-century masters, particularly in the smooth surfaces of his oil paintings and the use of dark, atmospheric backgrounds reminiscent of tenebrism. The depicted scenes often appear to take place in indeterminate settings, defined by a restrained, somber color palette and a powerful modelling light that gently shapes the figures. Through this approach, Eelen succeeds in establishing a contemporary painterly language that conveys both personal perception and collective memory with great intimacy.
