Statement :

I try to use my paintings not only to copy the visible world, but to transmit feelings and thoughts, to capture the invisible world like affection, child-like faith, human cooperation, God-to-human relationship, grief, hope, love, loss, pain, and humour. My symbolist paintings, which strike sometimes into surrealism ‘speak the unspeakable’.

They are based on my own experiences, situations and concepts, and because each of them is a small piece of my soul.

“Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures.” (Henry Ward Becher)

Love is blind
Love is blind (2024) 61 cm circumference, oil on canvas "...love is blind, and lovers cannot see The pretty follies that themselves commit." William Shakespeare
Family portrait
Family portrait (2024) 61 cm circumference, oil on canvas Two years ago, I thought there couldn’t be a more painful experience in a woman’s life than a miscarriage. Then I realized it can get worse... when I lost the second little beating heart. I grieve for all the tomorrows that will never be. This painting was created in memory of our two unborn babies.
Friendsheeps
Friendsheeps (2021) 70x100 cm, oil on canvas Friendship. It is one of the hardest things in the world to define. It’s not an object they teach you in school. When I was very young, I used to think that friends were the people you could laugh with, chitchat, and talk to. Now I perceive friends are more than that. Friends are people that touch your heart. They’re the people you can share secrets with, cry with, or just have fun with, people who accept you as you are. They believe in you, challenge you, inspire and encourage you, convince you you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. … however…not everyone of them is your friend. Just because they hang around you and laugh with you doesn’t mean they are your friends. People can set a false face well. Actual situations in everyday life disclose them as fake friends. They’re like shadows, following you in the sunlight but drop you in the dark. Like Mark Twain said: “Keep away from those who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but great people make you believe that you too can become great.” In Friendship it does not matter that you are different, that your style is not like theirs or that you see a lot of things differently. Despite the differences things work wonderfully together and we can learn a lot from each other. Be wise and careful! Appreciate the real ones!
Lost Eden
Lost Eden (2023), 75 cm circumference, oil on canvas Many of us heard of families where verbal or physical abuse was a daily occurrence. Where the communication between father and mother had snapped and they could not interact in an orderly manner. Because of what they heard and saw at home, the children’s lives were wrecked the most. The four walls of the home became a pain. This pain lasts far beyond the occasion. The children are mostly carrying it throughout their entire life. As adults, some of them might become intellectually flawed, unstable and incapable of building a healthy relationship… …but once upon a time there might have been an edenic condition. Once upon a time, their parents might have been in love, respecting each other…but that love got lost somewhere along the way. This painting is about these families. It is meant to suggest a warning that with our words (and acts) we can push each other into the deepest bottom instead of the dazzling and magnificent heights.
Love is patient
Love is patient (2023) 61x82 cm, oil on canvas (framed) „Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.” 1 Corinthians 13:4–8
Bio:

Her name is Ruth Schmidt, nee Ilonka. Born in Transylvania in 1982, today she lives and works in Budapest (Hungary).

If they ask her how long she has been painting, she would say since 2017, even though she started earlier, attending several drawing and painting classes. These years before 2017, she prefers to call “experiments.”

The breakthrough happened in 2017, when she met a wonderful artist, her Master, Kalman Gasztonyi and she began to learn the mysteries of classical oil painting.

The years 2017-2021 she calls ‘The Learning Years’ in which she produced vast amount of study paintings in many styles.

She particularly likes the works of Piet Mondrian, Andy Warhol, Salvador Dali, Albert Bierstadt, Rembrandt van Rijn, Karoly Marko …. The names bear witness she enjoyed experimenting with different styles and techniques. These can be seen mainly in her eclectic study paintings, where she uses a mixture of features from various ages, styles, and trends. Her admiration for Warhol and Mondrian can be seen in her pop art and Mondrian-inspired geometric figurative paintings. Her search for a way can be seen in her paintings during these days.

In 2020 she started to paint her paintings on symbolist and surrealist themes, in realistic style. She found herself in them.
