Statement :

The overall theme in my work is that of memory and how it relates to modern technology. Having worked in a variety of jobs over the years that have involved using computerised machinery, along with my everyday over use of my mobile phone, I have long been fascinated with how technology is shaping our lives on a daily basis.

In the same way that algorithms influence what we see, and how we interact with the internet, our memories are drawn to certain past events in our lives more than others. Our emotional response can distort how we see our present situations which can lead to errors in judgments. Whereas platforms, such as social media, can reinforce our prejudices, our flashbacks can lead us to making the same mistakes over and over again.

The more I use this technique, of painting an image affected by a digital distortion, the more I realize how personal and emotional the work that I produce is. Even if I am not aware of what I am trying to express when I start an artwork, there is usually a sort of revelation period, at some point, when I realise what past emotion, event or experience in my life I am trying to put down onto canvas.

Bio:

Liverpool (UK) based artist, Gerard McGregor, has been developing his artistic practice for the past seven to eight years. Largely self-taught, with no education in art above high school level, Gerard has used his twenty years experiences of working in highly automated environments and utilised it in his artwork. Working mainly in acrylics, he paints images that have been affected by some sort of digital glitch.

An employment history that has included computerised engraving, data imaging, CNC operating and production line work has helped Gerard to develop a fascination into our relationship with technology in the modern world. This, alongside his own personal struggles and experiences have helped shape the work he produces today.

Over the past few years Gerard has taken part in many exhibitions across the UK. In 2017 he was shortlisted for the Ashurst Emerging Art Prize. At present he is an active member of the Liverpool art scene and currently helps to manage the Arena Grounded Gallery.
