Statement :

I consistently produce works that cannot be classified as a singular genre. My three dimensional works are hybrid creations that interconnect sculptural, painting and installation practices which initially found their forms through architectural studies. Select concepts and idealisms prevail regarding diversity, visual kinetics and identity while questioning their object pairings. What I keep reaching for is to create works that are not conclusive but provoke open-ended conversations concerning the perceptions of form, communication, beauty, and especially joy. I refer to these works as Dimensional Paintings.

I have also become interested in developing a type of abstract but communicable visual language that utilizes form and color which to speaks as a narrative. In many cases, these biomorphic forms cross lines between the figurative and abstract and may project character like qualities.  My color and form choices are generally used as signals rather than being based on my personal aesthetic. During the early stages of discovery, my audience does become of importance. Their diverse experiences and varied responses help to channel my decisions away from my personal aesthetic to that which communicates more universally. I believe accessing a collective consciousness is the key to finding a greater understanding of signaling, whether it be emotional, cultural, psychological, mythological, historical or based on modern color science.

Throughout my career I have produced two and three-dimensional paintings, stand-alone sculptures, wall, floor and environmental installations, large commissioned works, screen prints, digital prints, film set designs, sound and video works. The outcome of what I produce is dependent on what mediums are most suitable for describing the project. I initially do research while producing hand sketches and or computer generated refined digital examples. Successful studies may become prints or be transferred to larger two or three dimensional works. If a concept allows for it, environmental installations have come to fruition.

To begin production, I perform a meditation that clears my mind of any preconceived geometric influences and viscerally create hand sketches from a first notion to insure invention in a search of unimagined forms and pairings that imitate life’s irregularity. I refer to this process as Unconscious Geometry. After refining the hand sketches, I build canvas covered armatures or embossing pieces then  photograph these unfinished works. The photographs are processed through Photoshop which allows me to quickly create studies for graphic placements, and color choices.
