Statement :

It Is Us is a project that delves into the complex relationship between humans and technology. Using an AI text-to-image generator and portrait photography, I aim to explore the symbiotic connection between the two.
The project consists of six black-and-white long-exposure portraits captured by a pinhole camera. The camera has a lens filter made from AI-generated images of eyes. During the 10-minute exposure, the subjects and the pinhole camera with the lens filter of AI-generated eyes unavoidably look at each other until the shutter closes. The resulting images merge human and technological elements, blurring the lines between what is natural and what is artificial. The black-and-white aesthetic of the portraits highlights the raw humanity of the individuals depicted while introducing a technological element that challenges our perceptions of what it means to be human.

Through this project, I aim to challenge the common perception that technology and humanity are separate entities. Instead, they are deeply intertwined and interdependent. By exploring this relationship through portraiture, I seek to humanize the impact of technology on our lives, encouraging viewers to reflect on their own experiences and relationships with technology.

The project's name, It Is Us, emphasizes that technology is not an external force acting upon us but an integral part of our collective identity. By embracing the complexity of this relationship, we can begin to forge unexpected and desired alliances that transcend traditional boundaries of identity and experience. Through this project, I also seek to address the topic of "Face to Face," by exploring the relationship between humans and technology in a way that allows for unexpected and desired alliances to form. While technology is often seen as a divisive force that separates us from one another, it can also be a powerful tool for connection and understanding.
