Statement :

In my work, I assemble a retrospective of vintage sources such as photography, wallpaper clippings, documents, film posters and other ephemera, reframing them in a tactile, physical context. Small collages serve as sketches that are then translated into oil paintings on canvas that appear to be collages, but are not. This faux-collage technique creates the illusion of stacks of torn paper or crumbling blocks. By layering textures and imagery from history, I highlight how the rise and fall of humanity's various eras relates to our environment. Birds land and rest on top of what appear to be collapsed, abandoned monuments. Like us, birds occupy the Earth only for a short time. Unlike us, they move freely and leave nothing behind. Themes touched on in these paintings include nature’s fragility, mortality, free association and ontological play.
