The photograph “Crossing 1” was taken on 19.02.2020. at the railway station in the city of Sremska Mitrovica, located in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, in the Northern part of Serbia. The photograph shows an elderly lady from one of the local villages waiting for the train to pass so that she can cross the railway tracks on her bicycle. Bicycle is a common means of transport in Vojvodina and she uses it on a daily basis to commute from her village to the centre of the city of Sremska Mitrovica, despite her age and, as she said, rather poor health. The photograph “Crossing 1” shows the contrast between the traditional and the modern, which is so common for the Western Balkans Region, affecting not only the means of transport but lifestyle in general, particularly when it comes to elderly population.
