Call for Submissions 2021:

This call is primarily open to artists working with film and digital arts with an interest/approach/research centered on the relationship between Feminism and the Asian Identity. It is open to artists of all ages, backgrounds and disciplines, including international artists living outside of the United Kingdom. Individual, collaborative or editorial projects are eligible.

For 2 weeks in October 2021, we will be hosting our pop up gallery in Islington, ‘ZAO TANG: Pop Up Gallery On Asian Arts and Feminism’. The gallery will become a space for social exchange and creative discourse, charged with the theme ‘What does it mean to be an Asian woman?’. The curation of artworks will present a connective strength that speaks about the identity of Asian feminism, provide assurance to vulnerable members of Asian communities of London, support under-represented Asian creatives, and invite all members of the local community to join in and celebrate cultural diversity.

Alongside our partners, we have, at present, selected 5 female artists to exhibit their works. They include Yushi Li, Hannah Lim, Ayumi Kajiwara, Young Sook Choi and STIGMA. With this open call, we would like to invite one more artist/s (individual or collaborative). The successful applicant will have the opportunity to exhibit the work, network with artists, curators, collectors and the wider public. Guidance and promotion through our (and our partners’) channels and network will be provided. The exhibition will also appear in a number of publications.

Inspired by an Object

Eligibility:

In 1964, Jasper Johns wrote himself a note: “Take an object. Do something to it. Do something else to it.” Since then, this set of instructions has referred to artwork that uses everyday objects and other non-fine art materials and describes the revolutionary approaches to art-making that developed from the early 20th century to the late 1950’s,1960’s, and beyond. For this exhibit, artists are invited to submit work in any medium and in any genre including abstract. However, an object must be used as the primary subject and inspiration of the work.

This exhibition is the fourth in SMI’s Community Partnership Exhibition Program created by cofounder and past president Virginia S. Block. The partnership aims to reach out to other nonprofit organizations each year to create a collaborative exhibition designed to inspire our members, create new connections, and reach new audiences. This year SMI’s Community Partner is the Montclair Art Museum (MAM). As a collaboration, SMI and MAM will be mounting concurrent object-inspired exhibitions. Studio Montclair’s exhibit will be displayed in our gallery and in the Museum’s Vance Wall Art Education Center arcades. Our selection team will determine the location of all artworks.

URBAN TALES
Art Exhibition in Lecce
curated by Dores Sacquegna
from 3 to 17 December 2021

Preview: Culture-transition-identity
On this trilogy of words we want to create an exhibition and narrative project of one's own city, as an urban center in motion, as a place of transition, migration and or of stability of our cultural identities. Through the narration of the city - with street photography, storytelling, architectural projects of a vertical city of the future, pop culture or other - the exhibition takes into consideration the urban tales or utopias of the 21st century, identified the city as an urban jungle , as a mirror and alter ego of our civilization. The cities and or places where we live are made of contrasts and strong similarities, and each differs in lifestyle, cultural identity, communication of beauty, architecture, history, art and other urban curiosities.
Urban Tales is an exhibition experiment of narration through contemporary art and architecture, to build a hypothetical map of the city of the future, through projects, photographic explorations and urban legends.

The city as a hub - The project offers the inputs to work on words such as living, public space, urban mobility, environment and climate, center and periphery, urban green life, sustainable architecture, art and environment etc. For each chosen district, the artists will have to add to their works-texts, as a trace of their passage, through a geolocation map (such as google maps) that allows to testify their presence on the narrated places.

Eligibility and type of works - The exhibition is open to worldwide artists and any media (painting, photo, installation, video, mixed media and more).

Exhibition and Sharing - Through the method of sharing photos, all the works produced will be identifiable on the app INSTAGRAM through the HASHTAG dedicated to the project. The original works will be exhibited in the Renaissance venue of Palmieri Foundation in the old city of Lecce, Italy.

Catalog  and Press Kit - Selected works will be included in the exhibition catalog with critical texts by the curator. Each artist will receive 5-10 printed catalogs and report kit press.

Art Curator - Dores Sacquegna is a curator and art director of contemporary art. Since 1994 to date, she has worked and reviewed works by recognized artists such as Christo and Jeanne Claude, Louise Bourgeois, Hermann Nitsch, Matthew Barney among others. She has curated exhibitions in Italy and abroad, collaborating with art galleries, museums, foundation, corporates and collectors.

Notes: Notes: In addition to the exhibition, we are also organizing an art residency in Lecce, with a site-specific project for the city from November 26th to December 5th if you are interested, contact us!
