Figuring Out... Making an Exhibition

Tuesday 21 & 28 June, 6-8pm

With many galleries, artist-led spaces and institutions programming several years in advance, DIY exhibitions can be a significant opportunity to get your work seen. Led by independent curator and mentor, Mark Devereux, this online short course will look at the central aspects of creating a successful solo or group exhibition.

Starting with the idea and the artwork, we will look at the core milestones of creating your exhibition including: devising the concept, securing a venue, creating a communications strategy, curating the exhibition, facilitating events and evaluating its success. You will be encouraged to consider your own practice or curatorial interests via practical exercises, punctuated by case studies and information shared from Mark’s 15-year career.

Designed for emerging / early-career visual artists and curators, this online short course will be delivered over two separate evenings in June to give you the tools and knowledge to start planning your next exhibition. In addition to the workshop we are pleased to offer participating artists a 10% discount on booking a one-to-one mentoring and advice session with Mark Devereux to support your exhibition planning. Please note: there are limited numbers of places available for these sessions and will be booked on a first-come-first-served basis.

Making Waves is back for its second year! We are officially inviting artists aged 12+ to submit work to be part of our annual exhibition at Making Waves Arts Fest! Selected entrants will get the opportunity to have their work exhibited at The HEART Centre in Leeds from 9-11th September 2022, with awards evenings being held on the 9th and 10th September.

We listened to your feedback and this year, we are doing things a little differently: rather than being solely youth-focused, we are opening up the open call to a wider range of ages! There are 2 entrant categories, 12-29 and 30+ to make sure everyone has a chance to be exhibited and to help in the fight against ageism in the arts world.

Submissions should follow the given prompt in any medium and fall into one of the following age categories:

12-29

30 +

Prompt

What is home to you?

This year we want you to consider our simple question, what is home to you? Traditionally home is ‘the place where one lives permanently, especially as a member of a family or household’. When in reality the idea of home is nuanced. Maybe you don’t have family roots in one place, maybe you’ve moved around town or moved to a completely different city. Perhaps home isn’t your home and more of a place like the beach or a local shop. Sometimes, home is a person or a pet. Whatever you believe home is, we want to know.

Description:
Madness (mental illness) is something that frightens and fascinates us all. It is a word with which we are universally familiar yet haunts the human imagination. Through centuries, in poetry, prose, drama, and the visual arts, “madness" has been on display for all to see.

With devastating effect, mental illness can disturb our commonsense assumptions; create unbearable disruptions in the routine of daily living; and turn our experience and our expectations upside down. And yet, it is this upside-down world view that opens a universe of unique and inventive perspectives oblivious to those free from disruptions of the mind. (think Vincent van Gogh, Edvard Munch, Frida Kahlo, Virginia Woolf and Edgar Allan Poe)

Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of photographic art that explores ideas linked to mental health, be it conflict or humor, fiction, or fact, or any other literal or ephemeral lens-based investigation. We welcome photographic art that questions conventional assumptions about mental health or celebrates the unique perspective only visible to those who can see the "beauty in madness”. All genres, capture types, black & white and color, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission.

The theme Pause for Thought centres around wellbeing and mental health, which can be interpreted in many wonderful and creative ways. We are excited to see how you respond to this open call and how your artwork has helped you or those around you.

The aim for this exhibition is to continue to bring awareness around mental health, and the connection it has with the creative industry.
