Exhibition & Art Residency

Palmieri Foundation, Lecce Italy

Art Residency: from 2021 November 26 to December 5

Exhibition: From 2021 December from 4 to 17

Curated by Dores Sacquegna

In the ex-votos, simple but energetic objects, the tacit alliance with the divine is materialized individually, without mediation, to strengthen mankind in the fight against the inevitable suffering of living. The ex votos testifies to an expectation that has not been disappointed, that particular "grace received" that has brought daily life back within the norm, but it is also an act of supplication and gratitude at the same time. They speaks a simple language that still retains an immense visual seduction today. From the ex votos that reproduce anatomical parts, to the multi-material ones, made with different techniques, from small devotional objects to painted tablets, these strange objects have crowded shrines and altars of churches for centuries. A tradition that seems to have been lost.

The ex-votos, which over the centuries has represented a form of devotion and bond with the divine, now represents for the artist the means to get in touch with own talent, the inspirational muse, and also, to thank for the gift of creativity received.

We work in collaboration with a talented network of publishers, dealers, curators and arts professionals, providing artists with customized services and opportunities to have their works exhibited, published and represented through various platforms and magazines. The exhibition is open to worlwide artists invited to present one or more works in any form, material and genre.

Venue Exhibition

The contemporary art exhibition set up at the renaissance venue of Palmieri Foundation (deconsecrated Church of Saint Sebastian) in Lecce. This place establishes a dialogue with the ancient works of sacred art that brings the themes of devotion and votive tradition back into the contemporary world.

Art Residency

In addition to the exhibition, there is the possibility of making an art residency in Lecce. The artists will be guests for about 10 days, during which they will create the works site-specific and to be exhibited at the foundation. Artists interested in the residency must notify us by October 20th, so that we can guarantee accommodation.

Open Call: Sustainable Studio Practice

This residency has been established as a safe space where you can develop a project focusing on the topic of sustainability within your artistic practice. It doesn’t have to be built around the production of art – quite the opposite: we are looking for art thinking projects that provide a new approach to studio practice in times of climate crisis. You will be working in a temporary community which will include artists from around the world. What most interests us is sustainability as a method, not as a subject. Our overall goal is to prepare a manual for sustainable studio practice which we can use in the future.

MeetFactory is a non-profit international centre for contemporary art. Our mission is to foster a dialogue between individual genres and make current developments on the art scene accessible to the general public. We support original projects in the fields of visual art, theatre, and music, as well as interdisciplinary and experimental platforms. We aim to create a space in which art is alive and artists are present, enhancing a direct exchange between international artists and visitors, as well as between different fields and generations.

What do provide:

- accommodation in a shared apartment,

- studio space,

This residency is intended for artists living within a radius of 1000 km from Prague.

Make sure you are able to spend at least 80% of your residency time here in Prague.

Committee: curators of the AiR MeetFactory + invited external curator (will be specified)
