Description:
Madness (mental illness) is something that frightens and fascinates us all. It is a word with which we are universally familiar yet haunts the human imagination. Through centuries, in poetry, prose, drama, and the visual arts, “madness" has been on display for all to see.
With devastating effect, mental illness can disturb our commonsense assumptions; create unbearable disruptions in the routine of daily living; and turn our experience and our expectations upside down. And yet, it is this upside-down world view that opens a universe of unique and inventive perspectives oblivious to those free from disruptions of the mind. (think Vincent van Gogh, Edvard Munch, Frida Kahlo, Virginia Woolf and Edgar Allan Poe)
Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of photographic art that explores ideas linked to mental health, be it conflict or humor, fiction, or fact, or any other literal or ephemeral lens-based investigation. We welcome photographic art that questions conventional assumptions about mental health or celebrates the unique perspective only visible to those who can see the "beauty in madness”. All genres, capture types, black & white and color, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission.

TRANSIENCE | OPEN CALL | PRAXIS DIRECTORS GALLERY
Entry Deadline | Mar 15th, 2022
Notice of Acceptance | Mar 23rd, 2022
Exhibition Dates | April 16th – 30th 2022
Theme: Transience | Guest Curator: Aline Smithson
The last two years have been profound in our reconsiderations of self. The pandemic has transformed the way we behave, has affected our psyches, and made us examine what is most important in our lives. We discovered that everything is fleeting and temporary, ever changing, moving, and evolving. Transience comes in many forms and awareness of the transience of all things heightens appreciation of their beauty and evokes a gentle sadness at their passing.
Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of photographic art that speaks to the transitory nature of life--from flora and fauna, from objects left behind after a loved ones passing, to memories and loss. All genres, capture types, black & white and color, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission.

She has curated and juried exhibitions for a number of galleries, organizations, and publications, including Review Santa Fe, Critical Mass, Flash Forward, and the Griffin Museum. In addition, she is a reviewer and educator at many photo festivals across the United States. Aline received the Rising Star Award through the Griffin Museum of Photography for her contributions to the photographic community and the Excellence in Teaching Award from CENTER. Her work was selected for the Critical Mass Top 50 and in 2015, the Magenta Foundation published her first significant monograph, Self & Others: Portrait as Autobiography. In 2016, the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum commissioned Aline to a series of portraits for the upcoming Faces of Our Planet Exhibition. Revival: A Call for Radical Care

Category:
Theme:
Eligibility:

Sulfur Studios invites artists working in all media to submit work for our curated exhibition; Revival: A Call for Radical Care.
As a culture, we have been indoctrinated into social norms that have driven us to lose touch with who we really are. This past year we have suffered through the collective trauma of the pandemic and the awakening of many people to the systemic racism and injustices present in our society. There is a common misconception that our world is changing, but it isn’t. The facade is crumbling.
In order to reveal our true selves, we must practice radical self and collective care. As the Nap Ministry states, “rest is a form of resistance because it pushes back against capitalism and white supremacy.”
Revival is a multidisciplinary exhibition that attempts to challenge how we interact with the world around us so we can begin the healing process.
What role do the arts play in the healing process? How do radical self and collective care inform your artistic practice? What strategies have you been using to facilitate radical care for yourself and your community?
We will accept all media for this call. Artists are strongly encouraged to submit work that pushes the boundaries of rest and radical care conceptually, aesthetically, or both. Up to 4 pieces may be submitted per entry - $25 per entry for non Sulfur Studios Members, $15 per entry for current Studio Members.
Work must weigh less than 75 pounds and fit through a standard size doorway. Shipping and insurance to and from the gallery will be the responsibility of the artist. Art is displayed at the artists risk. Sulfur Studios will handle all sales and a 30% commission will be retained by the gallery.
